Just learning how to use this. I have two tvs linked through google home and chrome cast...both show up there but when I try to airdrop from my iPad, only one shows up. What am I doing wrong??

I'm assuming you mean AirPlay, which is an Apple proprietary sharing technology. The TV needs to support AirPlay for you to be able to AirPlay content from your iPad. For that I'd refer to the manual that came with the TV or contact the TV manufacturer.

Thanks. I think maybe the tv is too old? Although we have used both tvs in the past successfully with Chromecast. Up to a few days ago, on the tv that does work, we were able to cast using a cast button on the screen for Netflix, Prime etc. without using AirPlay. now that button is no longer there and the only option is to use Airplay. All so confusing for a techno weenie like me. We were hoping to take the dongle with us on our trip and use it on the tv in our rental.

Can appreciate how it's confusing! There are a couple of different types of sharing that could be at play here, so let me demystify it a bit for you.

  • Some TVs have a feature called Miracast. This only works with some Android devices. iPhone and iPad don't support Miracast. The icon you see in apps looks very similar to the Chromecast/casting icon unfortunately.
  • Some TVs have AirPlay built-in. This only works with iPhone, iPad and Mac devices. You'll see a TV with an upward facing triangle at the bottom if the app supports AirPlay.
  • Chromecast is a separate media streaming device you connect to a TV. This works with Android, iPhone and iPad devices, using Chromecast supported apps or casting a Chrome browser tab from a computer.
  • Some TVs have Chromecast built-in, meaning you don't need to buy a separate Chromecast. This works with Android, iPhone and iPad devices, using Chromecast supported apps or casting a Chrome browser tab from a computer.

We are a Mac household (but no Apple TV). We have two Chromecast dongles. Both tvs are recognized by Chromecast…when I open Google home they are both there. Only one seems to recognize AirPlay, which is fine, as the second tv is older and likely doesn’t have AirPlay. What I find odd is, on the newer tv, until a week ago, apps like Paramount 1, Prime etc. had a cast option right on the screen…open app, select the movie, click on th cast icon…easy peasy. Now that icon is gone and the only available option is AirPlay.

Sounds like there's a issue communicating between your phone and the TV with that Chromecast. Try these steps:

  1. Make sure your Chromecast is within 15 - 20 ft (4 - 6 m) of the Wi-Fi router.

  2. Make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast.

  3. Reboot your router. Most routers just require that you unplug the power source and then plug it back in to reboot.

  4. Reboot Chromecast by removing the power cable, then reconnect it.

  5. Make sure you're using the latest version of those apps, by checking your app store for any updates.

  6. Restart those apps.
  • Android: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the app.
  • iPhone/iPad: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the app. On older devices with a home button, double-click the Home button, then swipe up on the app.
  • Turn Wi-Fi off and on again on your phone or tablet.
  • Reopen the app.

Thanks for all the the suggestions, Tried all that except casting with my phone instead of IPhone instead of my IPad. I have even removed the second tv from the Google Home app, My next stop is a call to Prime or Paramount…but alas I am leaving town so it will have to wait.

Thanks, I am currently out of the country but may work on this when I return. In the meanwhile this techno weenie managed to hook up up my Chromecast dongle on the tv in our apartment in Spain and I now have access to Netflix! (A good thing as there is no English language tv!)
