Hi all,

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Nest family. We appreciate the opportunity you've given us to help keep your home safe and secure.

Today we have a few important updates to share about Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works with Nest. These are all longtime Nest products that many of you have depended on to take care of what's most important, and we take your trust in them—and in us—seriously.

Over the years, we've launched new, updated products and features that deliver even more help and security for you. As we look at what it takes to support your needs going forward, it is increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware and newer, better options available.

As members of our community, we wanted to let you know about the changes that are happening:

Nest Secure
In 2020, we announced a long-term strategic partnership between Google and ADT, a leading US security and home automation provider. With this partnership, our goal was to develop even better solutions for greater customer peace of mind and choice, including giving users the option to add new types of sensors and professional monitoring.

We believe that our partnership with ADT creates a more helpful smart home security experience to help people connect and protect what matters most - both today and in the future. So starting April 8, 2024 support will stop for Nest Secure. Until that date, all current features will remain available and you can continue using your Nest Secure as you do now. After that date, your Nest Secure will no longer be accessible in the Nest app.

We understand that changing the technology in your home is hard. To show our appreciation and help provide a smooth transition, we will give users an exclusive offer for a Self Setup System from ADT on us (up to $485 value) or $200 to use on the Google Store.

Eligible Nest Secure users have been emailed with instructions on how to redeem this offer with a unique coupon code.

Dropcam
We are proud to have launched Dropcam over 10 years ago, and it was one of the first smart cameras on the market. As we look at what it takes to support your home security needs going forward, it has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware. So we made the difficult decision to stop support for Dropcam starting April 8, 2024.

All features will remain available until April 8, 2024. Dropcam will no longer work after that date, and you will no longer be able to use your Nest app to check status. If you wish to keep your video history, please download and save before this date.

If you are a current Nest Aware subscriber, we will be offering you a Nest Cam (indoor, wired) on us to help you keep your home secure. If you are not a Nest Aware subscriber, we're offering a 50% discount toward a new Nest Cam (indoor, wired). Nest Cam is part of our next generation of cameras with more helpful features like HDR and built-in intelligence. We hope you will continue to trust us to help you at home. Please note, your Nest Aware subscription will not be automatically canceled. It will continue to work with any other Nest Cameras in your home. We will contact eligible Nest Dropcam users with instructions on how to redeem this offer.

If you're in the US, we can help you recycle your Nest Secure and Dropcam. Our third-party recycling partner will send a postage-paid shipping label to your inbox.

Works with Nest
We created Works with Nest in 2014 as a way for smart home devices from other manufacturers to take what Nest knows and help personalize your experience, such as turning off lights when you're away. The connected home has evolved significantly in the past 10 years. In 2019 we made the decision to eventually retire Works with Nest to unify our efforts around third-party connected home devices under a single platform for developers with a focus on compatibility, security, and privacy. We extended the support for Works with Nest for the last few years, and we will officially end Works with Nest as of September 29, 2023. Until that date, all current Works with Nest connections will remain active. Starting Sept. 29, those connections will no longer work and you will lose access to them. In the coming months, for those interested, we'll make available a script editor for you to create advanced home automations that will offer new features and capabilities. We're also working closely with our partners to provide replacement integrations where possible. Learn about the changes and options available to you.

Thank you for your support
We know you might have questions about these transitions and the change they bring; please rest assured that at Google, we are building and supporting devices and services that work well together and are there for you when you need them. We hope these upgrades will help ease the transition and offer new, helpful experiences for your home.

We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause you, but we're committed to helping you and minimizing disruptions. For questions regarding how to redeem your offers, please contact our offer redemption team. If you need help with anything else, our support agents are standing by.

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Nest family.

What will happen to my Dropcam on April 8, 2024?

On April 8, 2024, your Dropcam will no longer work. You won’t be able to use the Nest app to check the status of your Dropcam, view live streams, receive notifications, or change settings. To keep any videos from your Dropcam, please download and save them before this date.

Does this announcement affect other Google Nest products or services?

This announcement only affects Dropcam, Dropcam Pro, Nest Secure, and Works with Nest. This announcement does not affect other Nest Cam models. If you need help determining if the camera you own is a Dropcam or Dropcam Pro, please refer to this support article.

Will this announcement impact my Nest x Yale Lock? Will I still be able to use my lock after support ends for Nest Secure?
This announcement only impacts your Nest x Yale Lock if you use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi. Once support stops for Nest Secure on April 8, 2024 you will no longer be able to use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi. As a result, you will no longer be able to lock or unlock your door using the Nest app. You will still be able to lock and unlock the door using the keypad on your Nest x Yale Lock. Until then, there is no impact.

Only a Nest Connect device will be able to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi after support for Nest Secure ends. If you currently own a Nest Connect, you may need to move it closer to your Nest x Yale Lock to connect it to WiFi.

For users that do not currently own a Nest Connect, we will provide one at no charge. We will send eligible users an email in January 2024 with instructions on how to receive a Nest Connect.

Will I need to buy a Nest Connect if I want to keep my Nest x Yale Lock connected to WiFi after support for Nest Secure ends?
If you currently use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi and do not own a Nest Connect, we will provide one at no charge . We will send eligible users an email in January 2024 with instructions on how to receive a Nest Connect at no cost.

I can’t (or don’t want to) install a Nest Connect in my home. What will happen to my Nest x Yale Lock if I don’t install a Nest Connect by April 7, 2024?
Starting April 8, 2024, only Nest Connect will be able to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi. Without a Nest Connect, you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door using the Nest app. You will still be able to lock and unlock the door using the keypad on your Nest x Yale Lock.

Can I install a Nest Connect to use with my Nest x Yale Lock after April 7, 2024?
Yes, however you will need to factory reset your lock to use a Nest Connect as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi . We strongly recommend installing a Nest Connect before April 7, 2024. This will ensure that you can continue to use your Nest x Yale Lock with the Nest App after April 7, 2024.

Why would we want to purchase another Google product after the company just screwed over its customers? We want a refund not credit for garbage Google products. ADP is a horrible company so there is 0 value to Nest Secure customers.

You made no mention of the Nest x Yale lock, but since there is no direct support in the Google Home app, I imagine that support will be killed too. Wow, I just spent hundreds getting my doors drilled to fit these locks.

As many others here have mentioned, a replacement system with TWO sensors does not at all replace the systems of people who have spent thousands of dollars on upgrades to the system. A short time ago, Google created a run on the Nest Detect sensors, and many of us stupidly bought many of them to try and future proof our security systems, since Google guaranteed us continued support of the device. Well, $1000 and 20 sensors later, and now my security system is obsolete.

This is a slap in the face to your most loyal (and apparently most gullible) customers. I hope a class action law firm is watching this thread and collecting information.

This is complete BS. I have spent thousands of dollars on my nest secure system, which I chose because I could self monitor. Not only are you taking that away but forcing us into a monitored system that doesn't even match up with what I currently have. Two sensors, a motion sensor, and a hub is not the same. I have been a long time Google customer but I will never buy another Google product because they don't support their products nor care about their customers. They can keep the 200 because whatever you buy won't work in a couple years anyway. I will be joining any class action lawsuit and will be contacting my state AG. Ridiculous...Google do better.

I hope there is a class action lawsuit. I bought these products in 2020. Weeks later, I get notified that Google is no longer support. Now, the whole thing is just being shut down? Thanks for making me waste thousands of dollars. Never buying google again.

So I understand this correctly. This ONLY affects products labeled Dropcam? I have 6 cameras that look the same as the old Dropcam, but are labeled NEST as they were purchased after Google purchased Dropcam. Are these still supported? @Lazarus

Please advise if a Dropcam HD will continue to work or will it be among the discontinued models?  Thanks! @Lazarus

I have 27 nest detects, stupid me 😞

9 nest protects

4 yale x locks

7 cameras

1 nest detect was going for $49, so total $1350 worth of detects that I should just throw away? Just after a year? Or replace it with an inferior $15 product? No thanks. Lawsuit incoming.

First of all, this is a total trust breaker. I invested more than $1000 in this product and now you tell me it won't work anymore? Gfy, you bunch of useless fcks!

dbellofatto16

So I know it's already been said a thousand times  but wtf.  Thanks for allowing me two door/window sensors, that is so generous.  I guess I'm just out of pocket for the other 7 I'll need.  I invested so much money in this system (along with the 7 cameras) and for what?  Only good thing is now I know what company to NEVER buy any product from again.

How about you just let the entire product work with ADT so those that have invested and gotten use to the system don't lose out on so much money.

Very disappointed to see the Nest Secure system support coming to an end. I purchased the system in 2020 as it was a well reviewed and easy DIY security system - just what I was looking for.
If you choose to move along with ADT (not a highly rated company), that’s fine, but please do not force us to abandon the systems that we have paid for and installed. They can still work on their own.
Anything less, and you can count on a hefty class action lawsuit that I will happily join.

$200 coupon code which came in email does not work ("Coupon Code Does Not Exist") - WTF...

Why is it necessary to disable the nest secure from the app, eliminating support is one thing but it does not require any effort by Google to keep the nest secure from being controlled within the app. We already pay for all the nest cameras and other nest devices.

When Google purchased Nest, Google was supposed to continue support.  This is disgraceful.  You can’t simply ‘turn off’ a security system that people rely on and have spent significant sums on.  Also, what about people outside the US who purchased the system and paid for (and have) an active subscription !  Maintain support for the existing system (including the App) like you should.   This has ‘class action lawsuit’ written all over it if Google stops support…

This is absurd.  "Thanks for buying our stuff.  By the way, we've intentionally made it obsolete.  You have way more stuff than what we're offering?  Oops.  Too bad for you!"  Totally absurd.  I feel halfway bad for the customer service representatives who work for this horrible company.  I'm on hold.  This is not acceptable.  Nest should be ashamed, and ADT should be ashamed as well.  And, they need to make this right.

VTron21

While I am annoyed, they are dropping the Nest Secure completely, I am also not totally surprised either.

My Big thing is what's being offered as a replacement.  The email states that we can get the ADT Self Setup System valued at up to $485.  And further down on the email it states that this is the Hub, 2 door/window sensors and a motion sensor.  Well when I go to ADT's site to see the starter kit, The closest starter kit is MSRP of $479, comes with the Hub, 4 door/window sensors and 2 motion sensors.  It also includes the Nest Doorbell (battery).

Being that the Nest Detects went for around $60 each and the ADT door/window sensors and motion sensors MSRP for $15 and $25 respectively.  Adding one of those for each Nest detect we have in addition to the 2 the Nest Secure came with shouldn't be an issue.

BTW, the ADT system doesn't come with a keypad...that's $90 MSRP Extra...but you could probably actually have more than one in your home.

I have 14 window/door sensors and 2 Nest Connect repeaters.

I pay $0/mo for this system to protect my home.

It is frustrating that Google thinks replacing this with 2 sensors and a $19.99/mo subscription is fair.

I want a full refund of all my purchases.

Otherwise I will be joining whatever class action lawsuit comes from this.

What an absurd announcement from Google and a slap in the face to call us "valued customers." After setting up my entire house 3 years ago with Nest, this is nothing but a bad joke. I won't spend a dime on another piece of Google hardware.

EugeneIsMyName

Can anyone recommend a non-Google replacement solution? I'm done with Google consumer hardware.

JSDS

I feel fortunate! My Nest Guard failed a few months so I've already started moving to a different platform.

My disdain for Google hardware just keeps increasing. They shouldn't be trusted for anything that you would like to keep long term.

What a mess! I would echo what most others are saying here about the large investment in equipment to support the Nest Secure and the weak replacement package. The smoke and mirrors around the $485 value gets me. The ADT Smart Home - Build Your Own Package includes the smart hub and 1 sensor. After adding an additional sensor and motion, the equipment cost is valued at $164.46. Yes, they are adding in a year of monitoring, which is good but the equipment replacement isn't even reasonably close to range of anybody's initial investment. What are you thinking?

On the ADT side of things, it's clear they are ill prepared for this announcement. I have tried calling them 3 times. Each time I have been on hold for 10 minutes and have automatically been disconnected (by ADT) without having spoken to a single agent.

Well planned and well executed Google and ADT!

These comments are so alarmist. You can already sync your CURRENT google nest products to ADT, here’s the instructions: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/11512937?hl=en

The thing that is changing is the Nest app and Nest Secure (the montinoring service) are being discontinued.

Google is offering to cover 12 free months with ADT for current Nest Secure Customers. ADT integrates with the google home app. Seems like a pretty risk free way to see if you like the service/functionality or not.

You can also see on ADT’s website that they currently offer Nest products here: https://www.adt.com/google

ADT also has support articles to help with setting up Nest products here:

https://help.adt.com/s/article/Google-Nest-Cam-indoor-wired

Take a collective breath, people.
It will be ok.

This post and the email you sent out is completely ambiguous. Please explain EXACTLY what will break, the devices specifically.  “Secure” is not a device, it’s an ecosystem.   I called support and they were completely clueless as to what was going on.  I have invested a lot of money and time to make our smart home solution perfect for us.  Here is what I have:

Thermostat display 3.4

Door lock Yale 1.1

Guard 1.19

Door bell wired

1 outdoor cam

1 nest cam indoor

Nest protect topaz 2.7

The Yale lock does not work without the guard, and the guard is integral to “secure”.  Based on what you stated, both of these devices will cease to function.  Please confirm.  Also, why are you continuing to sell the Yale lock is this is true?  If it’s not true that it will break, then, what devices are impacted and what is the replacement device for them to allow things to continue to work?

Class action suit anyone?   This is complete crap, I've got sensors all over the place, and now they will all just not work because Google doesn't want to support it?  Ok fine, don't support it, but at least allow it to continue to work for those that have hundreds of dollars invested.

Google, you need to rethink this.

OrlandoShelties

Absolutely disgusted, angry, and overall pissed off about Google's decision. I'll be forwarding their letter to my state AG's office to request they review Google's actions in this matter. Like many others, we have invested many thousands of dollars in equipment, and to have Google drop this  bomb on its users is not only unacceptable, it's a shady and bad business practice that's crying out for legal review. I encourage everyone to write their state AG and request they review Google's decision to kill Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works with Nest for a possible class action suit. We will NEVER buy another Google product.

Performance of my Nest Secure base station has been poor - frequently disconnected from network while other products (including Protect & Thermostat) remained connected. Google Nest support was never helpful & recommended an extender (my base station was next to the router!).

Good riddance!

This is a big bummer.

So I have several dropcams all with NestAware subscription, so I qualify for 2 free new ones. However, I can't change the quantity of the "free" from 1 to 2?.... how do I get my 2??

tntgalx10

It's one thing to stop "supporting" hardware that many folks have paid thousands for these dropcams new... only 6 years ago!! But it's quite ANOTHER thing to say not only are you not supporting it (no more software upgrades, firmware, etc.), but they literally become BRICKS in one year.  I'm sorry, but even in this day and age of continually progressing technology... somehow my 20 year old Sonos still work, are supported, etc... same with printers, etc.

Really disappointing. And the final coupe de gras is I actually OWN one of your "new" cameras and what a SAD PATHETIC interface Google Home is for viewing that one "new" camera.

Sellierc

I’m sure the technology has changed, but the Nest system works great and does everything I need it to do. A security system needs to tell you if someone is on or in your property. It doesn’t need to tell me if they play the lottery every week. Come on, Google!

calling ADT 1-866-257-8290 as indicated in the post to see the cost to replace my current 14 sensors, door cam, 3 X nest protects, 3 X temp sensors, .... etc.... been listening to their adds while on hold for over 45 min so far....

I have had the Nest secure system for years.... never had to call anyone at google.

if the ADT sales call takes this long to pickup, how will the post sale service look like!!!

If I have 2 of the drop cam cameras, how do I submit to get two new free cameras?  If I click on the link, I can get one free, but how do I get two of them?

Am I the only one that can’t figure out how to at least view the ADT package that they want us to transition? I don’t want to call anyone “to learn more.” I want to read what it is they’re trying to replace my system with.

I picked Nest because the door sensors are sleek and allow one button control to turn off and on when you only need to open the door but don’t want to turn the whole thing off. I specifically picked it for this reason and later integrated more doors and windows, and fire , and door lock, etc.

I’m super not interested in having someone come do a home consult or spend time on the phone with sales people. That’s why I picked a true self-service home alarm system!

EVERYONE! If you opt-in to get the 1 or 2 camera for "free," read the fine print on your order... you are relinquishing any rights to a class action lawsuit in the future, etc.  Here's the terms:

By clicking "Confirm purchase", you agree to the Google Store sales terms, including the arbitration clause linked here, meaning that any dispute related to your device and/or subscription services purchased from the Google Store will be resolved through BINDING ARBITRATION on an individual, non-class basis.

I have lots of google products (DropCam, nest cams outdoor, nest doorbell, nest wifi and nest doorlock). It's already very annoying that google doesn't have SINGLE app can support all those devices. It's a nightmare that I need to use several different google apps to access all devices. Not user friendly!

It's a shame that google shut down products without good plan to recover customer's loss!

As long as this happens once, how will google ensure it will not happen again for other nest/google products?

Offering discount on new nest cam doesn't make sense at all.  At least google should offer free replacement to working devices! I am seriously considering moving away from google now.

Absolutely awful. I expected google to stand by what they said they would do & continue to support the products. I have the base station & 19 sensors. I have 4 Nest Cameras, 7 smoke alarms, the thermostat, & multiple Home speakers. After today I’ll be transitioning away from all of it. $200 credit is an absolute slap in the face for an investment of $2k+ in just the alarm alone. There is absolutely zero excuse for Google to not only quit supporting the Secure but not even allowing a 3rd party to support it is just ridiculous. They talk about being an environmentally responsible company yet this decision creates waste out of working products for no reason other than to pad the wallets of a garbage company like ADT. Completely inexcusable on every level.

So what your telling me is my EIGHT Dropcam Pro cameras will not work at all next April?
I could understand you not supporting Nest Aware but to dis able the app & cameras is beyond belief.
I’m retired and can’t afford to replace my cameras.  Giving me ONE free camera is like recalling car tires and only replacing one.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

If I start replacing my cameras you can bet it will NOT be with your!

I was pretty disappointed when Google's new "Nest" products stopped integrating within the former Nest app after investing thousands into these products. I have always loved the simplicity and superior experience of the Nest app vs. the Google Home app for my Nest products. Should have seen the writing on the wall back then. Absolutely will be looking to a new brand that is seamlessly integrated and will not be replacing with any new Google products in my home. $200 is absolutely not enough to offset all the money I invested just a few years ago.

This is a joke right? At least let it work locally. ADT is complete garbage and half the reason most of us wanted our own system we could control. What is offered as a "thank-you" is no where near enough the equivalent value that some of us have spent even if we were considering moving to ADT.

Hilding

I got one (1) Nest Guard, six (6) Nest Detect, one (1) Nest Connect, two (2) Nest Tag. A part from two (2) Protect, four (4) Nest Cams (outdoor+indoor), and one (1) Nest Doorbell.

And now you kill it and I’ll get ZERO compensation as I live in Sweden?! That’s outrageous! I spent a lot of money and time to setup this system and soon it’s worth nothing!

This is not compliant with EU law.

I'm from the UK and have fully invested in the Google eco system. Does this mean I will get nothing for my nest secure?

Can you send an ADT system to the UK users? I don't mind paying £15 extra per sensor on top of the base package but please make the base package available to ANYONE who has purchased a nest secure.

When will Nest Protect work with Smartthings? It was promised and some of the Nest systems are integrated, but not the smoke detectors.

That is really wrong to force our hand with only two options, throw it away or become a member of ADT and pay a monthly fee!!!

The reason why I bought the system is because we would be able to monitor our own home, which is the purpose behind this type of system..  it would be nice to have the option to pay Google a monthly fee to keep the unit running as a standalone system with no middle man!!!!!

Not cool!!!!!

Please clarify this:

"Please note, your Nest Aware subscription will not be automatically canceled. It will continue to work with any other Nest Cameras in your home. We will contact eligible Nest Dropcam users with instructions on how to redeem this offer."

It means that i can keep my $5/month 5-day continuos recording Nest Aware plan with the new Nest Cam indoor? How do i switch the camera?

Akouri

Is Google offering 1 new Nest cam per Nest Aware Subscription or are you offering to replace all Dropcams on a Google Nest Aware Subscription to Nest indoor Cameras?

It seems like you might be hurting customers who were REALLY loyal to Google and bought a lot of Google hardware.

Maybe offer and update to support Onvif so that these cameras can be used outside of you soon to be discontinued network.

Mr. Pitchai are you even reading customer feedbacks? I am disappointed by Google's decision. I feel like they have cheated me. Informing users of a lack of support only one day in advance. Who is the person who signed off on these terrible customer communication plans? Poorly executed Google! Will never buy any Google product.

kendkirby1701

With the Nest Secure base I have and additional 16 door/window sensors will these work with the ADT Hub or the Google Home App?  I have 7 Nest Protect and 4 (various) camera types will they work?  To be honest you should publish what will be supported moving forward along with what you are ending life on.  My investment with Nest / Google was significantly larger that what you are offering.

MattGoncalves

This is absolutely ridiculous! We've payed over $1000 in equipments for the Nest System!! This is altogether outrageous, and the transition fee is not even close to being enough to replace our current monitoring systems.

Google is indeed becoming a terrible company. Plus, legal actions are coming.

re: @Lazarus  Google team, please reconsider your approach here.

By bricking the hardware ecosystems that your customers took a leap of faith in investing in, you are doing more to damage your reputation than you are gaining financially through this planned obsolescence scheme.

The services and apps can be deprecated, but it's fundamentally dishonest that you're planning to disable the hardware from working locally.
