Hi all,

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Nest family. We appreciate the opportunity you've given us to help keep your home safe and secure.

Today we have a few important updates to share about Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works with Nest. These are all longtime Nest products that many of you have depended on to take care of what's most important, and we take your trust in them—and in us—seriously.

Over the years, we've launched new, updated products and features that deliver even more help and security for you. As we look at what it takes to support your needs going forward, it is increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware and newer, better options available.

As members of our community, we wanted to let you know about the changes that are happening:

Nest Secure
In 2020, we announced a long-term strategic partnership between Google and ADT, a leading US security and home automation provider. With this partnership, our goal was to develop even better solutions for greater customer peace of mind and choice, including giving users the option to add new types of sensors and professional monitoring.

We believe that our partnership with ADT creates a more helpful smart home security experience to help people connect and protect what matters most - both today and in the future. So starting April 8, 2024 support will stop for Nest Secure. Until that date, all current features will remain available and you can continue using your Nest Secure as you do now. After that date, your Nest Secure will no longer be accessible in the Nest app.

We understand that changing the technology in your home is hard. To show our appreciation and help provide a smooth transition, we will give users an exclusive offer for a Self Setup System from ADT on us (up to $485 value) or $200 to use on the Google Store.

Eligible Nest Secure users have been emailed with instructions on how to redeem this offer with a unique coupon code.

Dropcam
We are proud to have launched Dropcam over 10 years ago, and it was one of the first smart cameras on the market. As we look at what it takes to support your home security needs going forward, it has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware. So we made the difficult decision to stop support for Dropcam starting April 8, 2024.

All features will remain available until April 8, 2024. Dropcam will no longer work after that date, and you will no longer be able to use your Nest app to check status. If you wish to keep your video history, please download and save before this date.

If you are a current Nest Aware subscriber, we will be offering you a Nest Cam (indoor, wired) on us to help you keep your home secure. If you are not a Nest Aware subscriber, we're offering a 50% discount toward a new Nest Cam (indoor, wired). Nest Cam is part of our next generation of cameras with more helpful features like HDR and built-in intelligence. We hope you will continue to trust us to help you at home. Please note, your Nest Aware subscription will not be automatically canceled. It will continue to work with any other Nest Cameras in your home. We will contact eligible Nest Dropcam users with instructions on how to redeem this offer.

If you're in the US, we can help you recycle your Nest Secure and Dropcam. Our third-party recycling partner will send a postage-paid shipping label to your inbox.

Works with Nest
We created Works with Nest in 2014 as a way for smart home devices from other manufacturers to take what Nest knows and help personalize your experience, such as turning off lights when you're away. The connected home has evolved significantly in the past 10 years. In 2019 we made the decision to eventually retire Works with Nest to unify our efforts around third-party connected home devices under a single platform for developers with a focus on compatibility, security, and privacy. We extended the support for Works with Nest for the last few years, and we will officially end Works with Nest as of September 29, 2023. Until that date, all current Works with Nest connections will remain active. Starting Sept. 29, those connections will no longer work and you will lose access to them. In the coming months, for those interested, we'll make available a script editor for you to create advanced home automations that will offer new features and capabilities. We're also working closely with our partners to provide replacement integrations where possible. Learn about the changes and options available to you.

Thank you for your support
We know you might have questions about these transitions and the change they bring; please rest assured that at Google, we are building and supporting devices and services that work well together and are there for you when you need them. We hope these upgrades will help ease the transition and offer new, helpful experiences for your home.

We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause you, but we're committed to helping you and minimizing disruptions. For questions regarding how to redeem your offers, please contact our offer redemption team. If you need help with anything else, our support agents are standing by.

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Nest family.

On April 8, 2024, your Dropcam will no longer work. You won’t be able to use the Nest app to check the status of your Dropcam, view live streams, receive notifications, or change settings. To keep any videos from your Dropcam, please download and save them before this date.

Does this announcement affect other Google Nest products or services?

This announcement only affects Dropcam, Dropcam Pro, Nest Secure, and Works with Nest. This announcement does not affect other Nest Cam models. If you need help determining if the camera you own is a Dropcam or Dropcam Pro, please refer to this support article.

Will this announcement impact my Nest x Yale Lock? Will I still be able to use my lock after support ends for Nest Secure?
This announcement only impacts your Nest x Yale Lock if you use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi. Once support stops for Nest Secure on April 8, 2024 you will no longer be able to use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi. As a result, you will no longer be able to lock or unlock your door using the Nest app. You will still be able to lock and unlock the door using the keypad on your Nest x Yale Lock. Until then, there is no impact.

Only a Nest Connect device will be able to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi after support for Nest Secure ends. If you currently own a Nest Connect, you may need to move it closer to your Nest x Yale Lock to connect it to WiFi.

For users that do not currently own a Nest Connect, we will provide one at no charge. We will send eligible users an email in January 2024 with instructions on how to receive a Nest Connect.

Will I need to buy a Nest Connect if I want to keep my Nest x Yale Lock connected to WiFi after support for Nest Secure ends?
If you currently use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi and do not own a Nest Connect, we will provide one at no charge . We will send eligible users an email in January 2024 with instructions on how to receive a Nest Connect at no cost.

I can’t (or don’t want to) install a Nest Connect in my home. What will happen to my Nest x Yale Lock if I don’t install a Nest Connect by April 7, 2024?
Starting April 8, 2024, only Nest Connect will be able to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi. Without a Nest Connect, you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door using the Nest app. You will still be able to lock and unlock the door using the keypad on your Nest x Yale Lock.

Can I install a Nest Connect to use with my Nest x Yale Lock after April 7, 2024?
Yes, however you will need to factory reset your lock to use a Nest Connect as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi . We strongly recommend installing a Nest Connect before April 7, 2024. This will ensure that you can continue to use your Nest x Yale Lock with the Nest App after April 7, 2024.

I am using Google Nest in UE. What do I get? Only US residents get credit?

Drop cam user - how can Google only give ONE day to archive all history?!!!  I use it mostly for recording clips of my young daughter- memories!

And what if one missed the notification or thought the email was a scam to click on a free camera link!!  I had to spend time to research this and it is nigh impossible to get a CC # - given up looking for it! This is a disgrace- shame on you GOOGLE!!!!!

Didn't Google sell a load of the additional door sensors for the secure just last year? Seems to me like they just sold off their stock and then scrapped the product.

Seems to me like that is illegal/unethical. Selling products they are discontinuing under 12 months later. ADT must be giving them a good cut of the profits.

I'm not buying anymore Google products. When they die (phone, smart home products etc) will replace them with something not tied to Google and I'm stopping my subscriptions. Shame on you Google, just pure greed!

This is a huge slap in the face to all of us loyal customers. Yes ok stop supporting it but it still works so let it keep working. I understand technology changes and advances but this is a back step in every way. The best sensors are way more advanced than these crummy adt ones. My old nest plug in cameras are better than the new ones. Nest was a great company then they sold to google which for a min brought some additional features but the last few years it’s all backwards and profit driven with no regard for consumers. I hope this whole thing fails for them as it should.

People let's start a class action. This is simply ridiculous. You partner with ADT? Well make sure all Nest products will continue to work. They don't have idea people spent thousands of dollars on their setup. They offer 485? It's nothing for me. I have 5 cameras, many windows detector, Yale lock, door bell, everything... Literally thousand of dollars spent. I will talk to my lawyer

This is pathetic. They do it over and over like when they bought Nest and excellent customer service turned in to typical Google non-support. Then the doorbells burn out house door chime transformers. Then they do away with Nest logins. Then the do away with the Google WiFi App and put everything in home where you can only find part of the original function. Then the Google Hub no longer streams the Nest cameras reliability. The list goes on...

And do they give us a list of what pieces and parts of our expensive security infrastructure will work with ADT?

No, that would be what the customer wants.

What's upsetting about this they are still selling Nest Protect in stores and on Amazon if it was discontinued in 2020 then why is it still being sold only to be no longer usable in 2024? Plus I got no email announcing this nor money which would be a slap in the face on why I would continue to buy google smart devices.

Does anyone know if I can get the ADT deal in the UK, I have received the email

If I'm understanding the announcement correctly, it sounds like the new ADT system will work with the existing Nest Cameras and doorbells and will integrate with the Thermostat as well as the Google Assistant/Home/Displays.  The main things that we would lose are integration with the Nest Protect smoke detectors (although that may be coming) and, of course, compatibility with any existing sensors and motion detectors.

The Yale x Nest door lock appears to be an unknown at this point.  The big questions there are whether we would have to buy a Nest Connect if we are using the Nest Guard to link it and whether or not it can automatically shut off the ADT alarm when the door is unlocked.

One other thing that really needs some clarification is whether or not the ADT system can work without a subscription like the Nest Secure can.  Some of the articles on this say yes and others say no.  Since the subscription-free plan was a big selling point for the Nest system, that seems like a pretty big thing.

Google definitely needs to put up a formal compatibility list (including roadmap for future compatibility) for the ADT system as well as an FAQ that addresses fully the differences between the systems and the details on the offer.

Once again another let down by Google.  Google, you shouldn't have purchased Nest!  You screwed up another great idea!

This is so ridiculous!!! I've spent many thousands of dollars on Google products. I've convinced so many people to buy Google products... I guess it's needless to mention that you lost your loyal customer and fan.

Anger, frustration and disappointment. That's what I feel right now 👎

The sad thing is that they want us to replace the well-designed and engineered Nest Secure product with some generic off-the-shelf junk from ADT. Is it UL-certified like Nest Secure was? I see that ADT’s commercial product and monitoring centers proudly tout UL compliance but can’t find anything about their residential solution. What exactly (explained as technically as possible) is the restriction for ADT/Google Home not being able to just utilize the existing hardware?

(All of this said, I do give them credit for not disabling comments on this forum thread at the very least. Companies that do that are true cowards and I do appreciate at least being given the opportunity to express my disappointment with their ‘executive decision’ even if it won’t make any difference…)

It’s funny that Google tells us to refer to the “community forum” for more info ….because they don’t wanna be bothered. All the questions on here and no one from Google can give us answers.

Greed was never so obvious. Not caring about the customers that invested in your company and products has never been so obvious.

I don’t want to pay a monthly fee for a company to monitor my home. You guys are “triple dipping”. U already got the money for the products, then pulled the plug and told us to buy additional products, then charge us a monthly fee….and if we don’t like that, here’s a measly $200 promotional code that doesn’t work (according to others) that you can use to buy more google products. WTF??!!!!???!!!

This is so disappointing and infuriating, especially considering I recently bought more nest detect sensors to expand my nest secure system coverage.

I have thousands of $ invested in the nest / Google home ecosystem. My nest secure system is working fine. Why just brick it like that? I would prefer to pay a reasonable subscription fee to keep it working and fully supported but this is just unacceptable.

Also as I live outside US it seems I will be only getting a nice paperweight.

I can't trust Google anymore with smart home hardware and services and will likely start migrating to other provider if this really happens in such careless manner.

The ADT/$200 credit offer is not equivalent to the price we've invested into Nest Secure and compatible devices. The nest secure base alone costs $399. The sensors were $49 each. The offer should be equivalent to our investment.

Please refund our Nest Secure purchases!

So, here is the brand new Google's partnership ADT for Home Security? Google put his own product on marketing, now decide to cease the previous aggrement with Nest and want to tell us, please trust me again? Seriosly go to that place! I'm very confused, specially because I purchased it in Brazil and will not get back a penny!

That's why I'm saying let's start a class action. Something. If we are all together we can be very strong. Google is a giant but what they are doing should not be allowed. I've never heard something like this in tech. They are basically shutting down our product. Make them unusable.

I have a nest secure that I bought from the Google Store. I never received a coupon code to replace it.

So re: cameras, when I log in to home.nest.com, those identified as Nest Cam and Nest Cam Outdoor will continue to function past April 2024, but those identified as Dropcam HD will cease to function?  The release indicates that only Dropcam models will stop functioning: "Support for Dropcam and Dropcam Pro ending."

Credits to buy more? I’m unplugging all google products. Canceling google subscriptions also. “Hey Google”, ha. “Later Google”.

Nest was an absolutely great company when the designer left Apple and dropped the original thermostat. I bought right in then and continued to purchase almost every Nest product. Multiple protects/thermostats/door locks/detects/secure/cameras/temp sensors. It was a very Apple like presentation and service/support. I knew once **bleep**ty google bought them they would fail and suck. Thanks for proving me right. I pray there is another company that will interface with the secure like the Starling interface I have which allowed me to use the once promised by Nest HomeKit integration. Please Starling save us. F U Google. Never again will I buy anything from you.

We should at least connect and try to get our money back. I put together a form for everyone to put their name and email so if this becomes a class action suit I can provide the firm with your information:

I have had this system from almost the start of when it came out. It was first monitored by Brinks. So not only am I losing my whole system, but I also have to switch companies?

Also if you look at ADTs site and look at their "Starter" system it is currently on sale for $336 and included 1 Smart Home Hub, 1 Google Nest Doorbell (battery), 4 Door/window sensors, 2 Motion sensors. The Google starter package has less items and costs $100 more (I know its free to swtich).

This is bull

Just talked to Google support. Supposedly the locks and Smoke detectors will still run through Nest app. We shall see

What I see fair is whatever hardware we have purchased should be given with the new system. So if you purchased sensors for all the windows and doors in your home, Google should give you the same with the new system. That's what I see fair, not tell us, well here are 2 new sensors and thank you???  I'm seeing a lawsuit coming, but then again Google has all the money and lawyers in the world.

csikyin

This is ridiculous! I do not believe such a big brand company is making itself into cybercrime; I would like to refund all those years of subscription fees and products from Nest. Yales smart lock, sensors, Cameras, Nest Secure, thermostat, Nest mini smart, doorbell, Chromecast, and hub..... otherwise, I will go for legal advice for further action.

JeffGr
Community Member

I'm not a lawyer, but I'd be really doubtful that there is any chance of a class-action or other lawsuit working.  Articles I've read on this have noted that the date of the shut-down next year matches the length of support that Google promised in the terms of use.  I'm sure Google's legal department has reviewed this pretty thoroughly and this is hardly the first smart-home device to be bricked in this way at the end of its support period, although it might be the most prominent.  Even the compensation is almost certainly a public relations move rather than a legal requirement.

Mrvinniyo

I'm not a lawyer either but selling items, then proactively disabling their functionality that they advertised is at least false advertisement and they should refund people.

A clarification regarding Yale x Nest locks would be greatly appreciated.  Can they be supported by the ADT solution? If not, is there any path forward for these locks?  I notice that they are still being sold.

Extremely disappointed by this announcement.  The seamless integration of all products in a user friendly interface not requiring to move from application to application is what initially drew me to Google/Nest.  I have spent a considerable sum of money to make that switch and also paid an early contract fee to leave ADT.  Like many others have expressed.  This is extremely disappointing and frustrating.

I would recommend that users hold out until the last minute and if enough dissent is expressed this may be reconsidered.

NEST was great. Then Google took over. We’ve had Brinks and ADT and we were tired of paying a monthly fee. Where I live you even have to pay the city for an alarm license if it’s monitored. GOOGLE, you SUCK.  Yes, I have everything across two homes—cameras, doorbells, protects, detects, thermostats, secures, and detects. When will your other products be rendered useless because you sell out to another “partner”? Any lawyers out there, I’d be happy to be your prime plaintiff.

WhatNow

I’ve invested quite a bit of money in Google Nest to in the end be a waste. The ADT offer is a joke and the Google credit is even worse. I have 10 sensors, three tags, and a secure that will be rendered useless. Nest cams, thermostats, and doorbells will still work. Smoke and Co2 will work. Along with temperature sensors. But I can assume for only a matter of time. This is lousy and unbecoming of a multi billion dollar company.

As a Hvac contractor (and a nest pro dealer) I will NEVER recommend a nest product again. I spent good money on a dropcam and now it will not be supported. The offer of 50% off a replacement product is mediocre at best! Give me a new camera at no charge! (I will be happy to pay shipping) or take the unit back and update it. This speaks VOLUMES in regards to what google/nest thinks of support for their products. Extraordinarily disappointed and how this pans out will directly effect my purchasing and recommendations to the hundreds of customers homes i am in a year

Open Nest Secure so someone else can support it or we can community support it. Hell, what happened to Matter to prevent this crap? The hardware is still very functional just because you don't want to integrate it into your new app doesn't mean we fill a landfill and loose our investments.

I am so angry and disappointed why Google do this.

I have purchased the nest secure and sensors only a few years and you told me that it didn't support anymore after your mentioned timeframe?  It waste all my money and time to installed.  So disappointed. ☹️

If you prefer to self monitor, you can cancel anytime and continue to use your ADT Self Setup System without a subscription.

1) How does this work without a subscription exactly?

- Will I get notifications on my phone just like I do currently with the Nest Secure?

- Will I be able to control the system via the app and Google Assistant remotely?

- Any benefits to having the Nest Aware subscription with the ADT system if I don't wanna go with the ADT subscription?

2) Is the Nest Yale Lock accessible through the ADT app?

I do not think it is fair that you are disabling my alarm! I already spent $399 plus at least $100 on sensors and a $69 range extender. I am not interested in ADT, and their system does not have enough sensors to cover my house. I do not think a $200 gift card at the Google store is a good deal and would like to be able to just return my components so I can purchase a system of my choosing.

Hey Google, this is garbage.

I have 4 Dropcam Pros yet you'll only replace two of them?

It's just software, no reason you can't keep supporting them.

This sucks. Terrible way to treat longstanding customers.

That is really wrong to force our hand with only two options, throw it away or become a member of ADT and pay a monthly fee!!!   The reason why I bought the system is because we would be able to monitor our own home, which is the purpose behind this type of system..  it would be nice to have the option to pay Google a monthly fee to keep the unit running as a standalone system with no middle man!!!!!   Not cool!!!!!

I have a huge investment in Nest products from 2020 onwards. Functionality continues to decrease. Now, entire products are not just losing support but being turned off, and for no good reason. This is just completely unacceptable and just a terrible customer experience. We should all write the CEO of Google on this one.

Very sad. I couldn't be more disappointed!

If Google can antiquate a critical security product to the point of bricking it, they can do this with just about anything they offer. Say bye bye to all your photos on Google photos some day, or adios emails in Gmail. It's beyond ridiculous that after only 6 years of ownership along with countless hours of install work and holes drilled into walls to accommodate dozens of Nest components, they would execute their planned obsolescence of Nest Secure and eventually all other non-ADT solutions. It's clear they just want to force people to ADT for that pathetic monthly fee when many of us bought into the 2017 system to SELF monitor, not have someone else monitor for us.

I'm trying to save a clip and keep getting an error that it can't save more than 3 hours. | selected delete all video history (which sucks because previously you could delete individual clips).

After doing this, it STILL won't allow me to save an important video clip!!!! Can someone from nest or Google please help

I would like to ask if my Smoke Detectors will be able to move to google home after the nest shutdown?

Oh, and btw, some people moved to Google to stay away from the ADTs and Brinks of the world.... From the looks of these posts, seems like a lot of folks trusted your services.

I hope you can do better than this in the future!

This sucks tremendously, but what makes matters worse is that your "act of generosity" to give us codes doesn't even work! ADT says they can't find my code in the system. So now what?
