Nest Community Members,

Since launch, many of our long-time Nest customers have provided valuable feedback on our new Nest Cam (battery) and Nest Doorbell (battery) devices -- particularly on the transition to the Google Home app experience. We hear you, and we’re taking your feedback to heart. In this post, I want to share more about our commitments to you going forward.

The transition to the Google Home app

Our new cameras, including the upcoming Nest Cam (indoor, wired) and Nest Cam with floodlight, were made specifically for the Google Home app. Unlike the Nest app, the Google Home app was built to accommodate both battery and wired products, event-based and 24/7 continuous video history, while giving you a whole home view and history of your camera and doorbell feeds across all Nest cameras. You can check out the recent Nest Community blog if you want to read more on Nest cameras and the Home app.

We chose to transition to the Home app because this app is designed for the future of the smart home — a single place to set up, manage, automate, and control your home. Today, most home devices are controlled across multiple apps, but we’re working on making the Google Home app the central controller across all your home devices, including Google devices and devices from 1,000s of other brands. We continue to make major improvements to the Home app to support this future.

That being said, this means that existing Nest households with cameras and doorbells prior to Nest Cam (battery) and Nest Doorbell (battery) may have a two app experience. We know this can be frustrating, and we are committed to bringing the experiences and Nest devices you have come to love in the Nest app into the Home app. This will take time to get right, and we will continue to share more details as we have updates.

We are listening to your feedback and will continue to make improvements to advance the camera experience in the Home app. For example, we’ll soon introduce the ability to flip between events quickly and easily, which is helpful for events that are far apart, or if you only want a glimpse of the events versus playing them back fully. And we’ve also been working on rolling out a desktop experience for the Google Home app, so the new Nest cameras and doorbell feeds can be viewed and controlled from there. This will launch in 2022.

Other updates

We also heard feedback from many on the multi-pack cameras only offering a single charging cable. We recognize that this doesn't work for all users, so we are offering a free additional cable(s) to customers who purchased the two-pack or three-pack. Just contact our support team.

Finally, we commit to being more transparent with you on where we are taking the camera portfolio. We know that those with wired doorbell connections prefer to have a doorbell that can also support 24/7 continuous video history (via the Nest Aware subscription). We are excited to share that we will be launching a 2nd generation of Nest Doorbell (wired) in 2022.

Hopefully this post gives you more context on where we’re heading together, and we’ll share our upcoming plans here on the Nest Community. I encourage you to share your feedback with us as we continually improve our products and experiences.

I'm a customer since the first Dropcam and have many Nest products. Nest cam IQ outdoor was amazing. So, when I clicked on "store" from home.nest.google and then purchased the new Nest Cam with Floodlight, one would be led to believe it works with that platform...Extremely deceiving and since I waited until my installer could put a new fixture in place, I'm past the return window. Will be watching to see if a class action happens...

This is a stunning failure.   I go buy a new Nest Cam floodlight, open up my Nest App to add it, and it doesn't work.   So I fire up google, to find out how to fix it, and discover.... YOU DID THIS ON PURPOSE?!?!?!?

The one app I've used for all my Nest cameras, I can't use?   And the one you want me to use,  I can't use a browser?   I can't share it?   I can't stream it?   Nowhere near feature parity?   After how many years of waiting?

Google.   You try our patience.   Total regret.

Long time nest user. Very disappointed in the floodlight and have to exclusively use google home. False advertising calling it nest. Yeah, this sucks. I'm out, not happy and not useful to get notifications in two spots. I wanted a seamless experience and Google screwed it up.

With 4 cameras, 2 thermostats and 6 Protects, our home is "all in" the Nest ecosystem.  Waited a long time for the Nest Cam with Floodlight -- but discovered it's not compatible with Nest App (mobile/web).

At this point we're holding off from adding any more "Google Nest" devices until you sort out the application compatibility issues.

For us, the Nest App is much closer to what we want than Google Home.  I hope any new app offering retains that base of features/functionality/usability.

I have had the new GOOGLE/NEST camera for less than 2 months.

It has fallen off the magnet 3 times.

A little wind and it falls to the ground!

It looks like Amazon already is selling mounts.  They advertise that this mount “prevents falling”

I had a wired Nest Cam on a magnet mount and never had it fall in 6 years.

What a bad design.

The new Nest Cameras controlled by Google Home instead of the Nest app do not trigger on sound events and the downloaded video clips do not have a date or timestamp. I much prefer my first camera Nest Outdoor IQ which uses the Nest app.

I tried to return my two new Nest Indoor Wired Cameras but I was a week past the short 14 day return window and they said no exceptions.

I was so disappointed to find out that I have to use two apps for my nest cameras and thermostat. The interface in the Home app is terrible. I want to be able to quickly view my cameras rather than scroll through room by room. At least give us the option to display camera feeds at the top of our Home app. I can’t believe this is a Google product….

Ridiculous! First rule of product management is ensure customer satisfaction! Why if everything is fine with Nest would a transition be necessary? I’m a long time customer and am not satisfied! I don’t want google home! I want Nest. I don’t want more invasion of my privacy with other unwanted features. I want simplicity. I dont want features for the sake of features. Your customers have spoken and we dont want google home!!!!! Maybe you should be replaced as vp because youre not listening to your customers…instead youre forcing something down our throats we dont want!!!!

I would hate for my comment to keep getting buried, you make a difference by making sure reviews that accurately reflect your experience with the new line of products are front and center and the Google paid review bombs does not get to take over and drown out real reviews. Most of these reviews can be done in just a couple of minutes and you can copy/paste for speed.

I can’t say this enough. If all of the sites start showing 1*-2* reviews, they will pay attention because it will affect sales. Leave them your thoughts on every product page you can. Here’s a list of links to help you get started.

Please clarify what is meant by "a desktop experience".  I really hope this means web browser.  I bought this NEST (floodlight) camera assuming I could access it via a web browser like I was able to with my other NEST cameras.  *Most people want to review video footage on a big monitor, not a tiny phone screen.*

And "in 2022" with no other information?  So I should assume Dec. 2022?  I have to wait nearly a year to use this NEST camera the same as I have been using my other NEST cameras?

And I just found out by testing that there's no time stamp on clips??  What happens when I need to send a clip to police?  This is the worst security camera ever then.  My existing NEST cameras can do all this no problem!

@GoogleNestTeam  I'm about to nope out of the Google ecosystem on every product.  Chromecast w/ Google TV barely functions, Google Assistant devices understand less and less, and now I'm losing camera functionality.  Please rectify this ASAP or I'm returning my newly purchased cameras and finding another company.

I think this would be a nice class action lawsuit.  Selling a product (Nest Camera Battery) under the disguise that it would be a great security comfort and compatible but in reality does not work and you cannot provide any video clips to police if needed.   they sucker you in and take your money and in turn provide substandard practices.

Nice going...

@Rishi @GoogleNestTeam- As someone who has been a NEST consumer and promoter from the very beginning I am very disappointed that my 4 new battery NEST cameras do not work/appear in my NEST app and that I am being FORCED to use Google's sub par Home App.  The fact that Google misrepresented these cameras as being NEST cameras is shocking and a complete marketing misrepresentation; fraud comes to mind.

Today I reached out to support via the link in your post to request two additional cables since I only received two cables with my two 'two pack battery camera' orders.  I am beyond confused as to why support needs access to all  four of my new battery cameras to 'view information in my account for 90 minutes.'   When I asked what would support be needing to look at with such access I was told 'details like Security, History, Current Device Statuses and Metrics.'  Are you kidding me, I am dumbfounded.  I suggested to Support and now to you @Rishi @GoogleNestTeam that Support should ask the customer for their Google Order Number, validate what was purchased and provide the needed cables OR better yet Google should proactively identify what customers purchased two/three pack battery cameras and proactively send to the customers the appropriate cables that they should have received in the first place.

@Rishi @GoogleNestTeam -

I wish I had seen this before making my purchase.  As I am still in the 14 day window for returns, i will be initiating that process today and purchasing a competitors product.

This was my first Nest product, and likely my last.

I am very disappointed in the product.  From its construction (Looks and feels cheep), inconsistent  motion sensor , to the incompatibility with the nest app and lack of Smart Home Hub integration such as SmartThings.

I purchased this product as it is marketed as Google Nest doorbell.  The product functionality with the Google home app is horrible.  its clunky at best.  Then there is the issue of the doorbell battery not being compatible with its own app.  There is no compatibility with SmartHome hubs such as "SmartThings" or drivers for the device.

The Google Home App: Where do I start... Limited functionality with the Doorbell Battery, Notifications for the doorbell battery do not include a "Doorbell Chime" feature for IOS/Android,  Notifications are slow (Accessing doorbell is not a fast process in the Home App), Lighting Control is slow, and there are very few routines you are able to configure...

The google home app feels like it was launched without testing properly... The product and Google Home app would have been a decent beta launch...

The setup process was straight forward.  That is the only positive i experienced.

I can not say that I wont purchase other Google Nest products in the future, but I will say that as a tech professional I will no longer be recommending Google Nest products as a consumer solution, or the Google Eco System until they are more reliable, more user friendly and have wider compatibility.

So much for having a SmartHome Christmas with the family.

Chandra, you have had years to "get it right" but you seem asleep and out of step.  The war-chest of money and talent available to you is wasted as your sorry vision and lack of leadership has produced nothing, literally not a thing, of real value for the ecosystem you are in charge of.

FixItAdam

if it will take time to "get it right" on the google home app, then why are you forcing a premature migration? This "2 app experience" as you call it is beyond an inconvenience. I have lost features that I pay monthly for. Guess I'll cancel my nest aware subscription since you've turned your back on the entire product line that your loyal customers (me) have already paid for. Meanwhile, now's a great time to break into my home since my cameras are split between two apps and only half of them support cloud storage backup for detected events.

1/10 this is crap.

same boat as the rest of you guys. Bought a battery camera today, spent 30 min trting to realize why the nest app would not let me see it with the other cameras...Then find this thread.

to be honest, its **bleep**ty that im expected to go to the home app, where i cannot see a live view immediately like with the nest app. Please for the love of god, make the home app give us live view as soon as we open it like the nest app, and a way of grouping all the cameras. As someone who works in security, this is a big kick in the nuts. Considering people have been asking for this since September. I guess ill just have to tell my clients who dont want to buy nvr systems and use a simple route to just go with Arlo or another brand.

I must say that I am very disappointed with this update from Google in respect of the Nest camera situation as it clearly shows that they haven’t been listening to a large proportion of their existing user base that have heavily invested in the Nest products as a result of using the simple Nest app. I for one am one of the poor suckers that have found myself have to flip constantly between the Nest and Google Home apps to get what I need, and even more frustratingly find the Google Home app user experience vastly inferior to the Nest app so I just don’t know how much longer my brand loyalty will last !

Wise1

I am beyond dumbfounded by the incompetence of the Google Nest team.  If you were one of my development teams you would have long been fired.

To go backwards with capability and assume its an acceptable inconvenience for a user to switch between apps with less functionality all due to your own incompetence is astounding - but seems to be a cultural trait at Google.

So where does that leave me - a customer with 4x Outdoor IQ's; 3x "original" Outdoor cameras; 7 Nest Protects.... well I am going to start transitioning to Unifi Protect; already have a DM Pro so just need to add a hard drive and can then start replacing my Nest Cameras one by one.... hell its not like its going to be any worse that switching between your two apps, plus I can then bin my Nest Aware sub.

Thank you to the user above that recommended unify protect.  I ordered a new doorbell cam, and 5 new outdoor cameras.  I intend on taking my existing Nest cameras and throw them away.  It's a lot like lighting $1000 on fire.  It's a camera feed.  We aren't talking about some big new programming project.  It's a **bleep**ing camera feed.  Disappointed beyond all measure.  Consider me now a counter-influencer for nest products.  I probably, over the years, directly got about 100 or so people to purchase your products.  That's over.  I will influence thousands not to ever touch you products again.

It’s a shame there is a lack of realisation at Google that Nest cameras USP was the quality of the product and the service.

I want higher resolution cameras and fast access to my camera feeds for all my cameras - not low cost, lower quality inferior cameras…….

this latest stance along with a general degradation of service quality - lost count of the number of times my cameras have gone offline recently - just makes the decision to move to. A different vendor all the easier

Bring back Nest..this sucks in plain English..your new cameras suck, your motion detection is a joke...your battery camera is nothing but a hassle and useless...yeah lets charge the battery at 10 below zero...WTF is wrong with your team. Learn about security..real security...before you make major decisions in people's lives. I've had a stalker for 12 years...stopped in his tracks with the Nest Cam IQ..with your new camera's he'll be back for another 12.

Am going to jump in here to complain.  I've been a Nest Camera user for my two homes since they came out.  I've been waiting patiently for Nest to come out with an outdoor camera which you did and purchased.  While waiting I've also deployed Blink's which has a nice App and also Arlo's but while the image quality is fine the battery life is not very good.  Purchased and installed the Nest  Outdoor Battery Cam with a wired power option.  Upon configuring found out after repeated attempts that this new camera is not compatible with the Nest App and only with Google Home.  This is extremely disappointing and frustrating.  I've always promoted my Nest systems and am in the tech/ IT business.

I bought Nest as a security camera and home monitoring system.  Period.  I don't need to control my whole Home using the Google Home app which I seldom even use.  I hope to see these new  cameras added to the Nest App where I can use and pay for the Nest Aware recording.  If this is the direction Google is taking, then no more purchases of their camera system.

Why does the Nest Team not respond to any of the comments? It seems they are ignoring loyal customers.

Luchador

they dont respond because they havent fixed the issue since sept. They dont have a solution, they want everyone to basically abandon the nest app and make users use the Home App. Its a bummer, but i guess ill continue to be punished with the lackluster ui of the camera portion of home...

i started with the drop cam purchased 3 of those then 3 nest outdoor and then another 3 nest IQ outdoor which is quite an investment and been a loyal customer.  I purchased 4 nest outdoor battery from Best Buy last night only to find you have to use the google home app and cannot integrate with the smoothly ran nest app that has been a solid rock for years. I will be returning cameras back to the store. Class action lawsuit will follow as this is gonna effect many people google home app is garbage. Period. Shame on google

I’ve returned my new nest battery camera since it won’t work with the nest app…where all of my other cameras are and work just fine.

The "new" system is so terrible that I'm returning the 4 new cameras that I tried to add to our existing Nest system, because they don't work with the Nest App. Google Home is a terrible application and having to use two apps make no sens. I also cancelled my Nest Aware plan as continuous recording is no longer available.

I think I'm done with Google for life.

Bumping this to the top, make sure you leave them your unpaid (like the ones they put out there) reviews. That is what will motivate them, a review that they know could alter someone making the same mistake a lot of us did.

Hey Chandra, you have to STEAL from Sonos in order to effect basic featurization in your products, and now customers get to suffer loss of functionality because you can't engineer your way out of a paper bag? Even your latest camera rollout is a complete debacle and what you pulled with Guard/Secure in total arrogance. You eff up everything you touch, so why are you even still around?

@urlybird 100% accurate, after returning the wannabe new nest cameras, I spent double on buying unopened and some used older cameras to add to my home. I noticed a significant price jump in the IQ line over the past couple of weeks, finding them at a reasonable price is getting harder and harder...it is like people like things to work as advertised and are willing to pay money for it...who would of thought.

Ben8362

The original post is a non-answer to the issues users are having. Buying a NEST camera, having it not work with the Nest app, and not having a solution for your customers who surely are in a similar situation as me is completely ridiculous and shows a serious lack of foresight (or care?) by the Google Nest team. There should have been discussions about the pain points customers would encounter with these changes and transition solutions put in place well before advertising started.

I read about these cameras when they first came out and wrote them off thinking I wouldn't want or need battery models. Due to an overestimation of the weatherproofing on previous models I managed to short out two of my IQ cameras accidentally when cleaning our gutters (admittedly, my own fault). Imagine my surprise as I go to replace my broken cameras and discover they are no longer available and these battery models are the only choice now. Then imagine my shock, frustration, and outrage that I can't add them to my existing Nest surveillance environment and have to manage 3 cameras across two different apps. The cherry on top is no web access! What were you thinking? It's already a  chore to navigate motion events and clip storage so you made it even worse? Baffling. Also, in that same vein, how do you not offer RTSP streams?

On top of that, these cameras are a huge step back in overall quality. I work in cloud surveillance for a VSaaS company and got these to keep my work and personal life separate. Even the previous two generations of Google Nest cameras were inferior to practically any other 2MP camera on the market, but somehow these are worse? I'm not sure what is going on in the backend to save on resources/battery, but the motion detection is absolutely atrocious. I set one of these up last night on a post looking right at the hole a skunk dug under our shed and I got zero alerts for motion with the skunk in it. I know for a fact that it emerged and ran around the yard because there are half chewed up fruit from it everywhere. I put the older cameras in the same spot and they picked it up, why not now? The fact that the old cameras are reselling for over double their original MSRP speaks volumes.

So, here I sit wondering if I can get a refund for these cameras and deciding if after sinking literally thousands of dollars into these cameras and the services: do I just chuck them in the trash and finally bite the bullet for a wired POE system? Since the company I work for does commercial surveillance I have been recommending these to home users and budget focused small businesses that reach out for YEARS. I just got done telling the first of many that Nest is no longer the go-to home surveillance solution. I hope you guys are paying attention because there are tons of other cloud surveillance vendors waiting to scoop up your market share.

If Nest is not supported on the Nest app - you should remove it from you advertising! My Nest Cam with floodlight specifically says 'Nest'... Oh but wait, it isn't supported on the Nest app which works great on a PC. Guess what don't work on a PC - Google HOME!!! This needs to be corrected... totally ridiculous. I now have an ipad (ridiculous that I have to do this) just so I can see all my cameras, doorbells and my thermostat. I'm very disappointed - someone didn't think this one through very well. Might want to rethink this decision!

As an owner of 4 Nest Cams with NEST App setup, and recent purchase of a Nest Cam (battery) with HOME App setup, the new cam with HOME App is HORRIBLE.  The Home App is extremely clunkly/slow.  The Home App does not allow me to properly setup the cam like the other 4, due to TOO MANY missing features in the App.  After burning hours trying to rectify the problems, the camera is now in a state where it cannot be reset, and will NOT connect to anything.  It is as if BIG google acquired Nest and screwed everything up post M&A, not enough retention bonuses to the Nest SW engineers that actually knew what they were doing.  STAY AWAY from these new products, it will be MANY YEARS before Google figures this all out, respins boards, rebuilds apps and debugs SW.  The new cams were not even close to being ready for launch.  Excellent screw-up Google, i'm not interested in GM apologies after the fact, execute with perfection out of the gate, and if this HOME App was launched on your watch, polish up the resume, best of luck, thanks for wasting a bunch of my time and money!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps make a doorbell that does not die when the temperature dips below 0 degrees.

I bought the Google Wired Doorbell this past Fall.

Whenever it gets cold, it simply dies.  Mine has not been working for almost a week now during cold weather.

There are several other users who have experienced the exact same issue and we have documented this in the community forum.

Will you provide us with replacements that work in 2022??????

when the temperature drops below 32 Fahrenheit they tell you to bring it inside and warm it up!  This product was certainly not designed for the USA.  I have also battery operated products.  They have never stopped working when the temperature drops below freezing.  The battery operated camera is just terrible and is the HOME app they make you use!

mpb65

Exactly.

I have cheap solar powered Christmas lights that somehow manage to survive the cold weather and come on at night vs. the Google Doorbell that dies at the first hint of snow.  Pathetic product.  More troubling is Google's complete lack of silence on a refund or upgrade.

@pslawing no, they do not. They do not care, that is why I have repeatedly said that the only way to get them to listen is to hit them in the reviews. Post your more accurate reviews because what is out there are the paid reviews they solicited that make all of their new products 5* reviews. If everyone on the thread left a review for how they're feeling it would more than likely put them at a 2* review.

So months in and I don't think that I have seen a single positive comment about the new "Nest" cameras on this blog post, and as far as I can tell there still has not been any course change, improvement to Google Home, or even so much as a response to all the disappointment.  I have been a Google promoter for years, and I am now starting to regret ever saying anything nice.

It also seems that Google is now paying for bogus good reviews on its new cameras.  If you look at the reviews on Home Depot's website nearly all of the good reviews (if not all) start with "[This review was collected as part of a promotion.]"  This seems incredibly dishonest especially when so many people are so upset about these cameras after they receive them.

Katieb
Community Member

I tried to read through all the comments but it was too painful.  Sorry to whoever has to do that for their job.

I don't care what app I use to access the cameras.  I just wish that you would give the home app the same capabilities that the nest app has.

1.) I would like to be able to make a clip from any part of the recording not just the notifications.

2.) The home app should be accessible from chrome on a desktop/laptop.

3.) Make it more simplified to access the cameras on the home app.  I can see everything when I open the app but the cameras.  I have to click on the camera and then wait for all of them to load.  I realize this one may not be feasible because it would make the loading time of the front page of the app longer so I am willing to bend on this one.

I have only been using the home app to see my cameras for a couple of months now but the first two are the most annoying features I have realized.  I am often at work and would like to open the cameras on my computer to be able to see what is going on (if mail or package is on my porch or if the kids are letting the dogs out) without having the cameras notify me of everything in the world.

If you have read this far thank you and I appreciate all that you do.

Here’s an idea!
Give Nest back to its rightful owners.

Pay them a 7 figure penalty for **bleep**ing up a perfect app.

DON’T EVER BUY ANOTHER COMPANY AGAIN. Just stay in your **bleep**ing lane and stop **bleep**ing the people who are ultimately responsible for paying your salaries.
