Hey everyone,

We’re always looking for ways to create a more helpful home, and today we have an update for those who have a “blended” smart home. We’re happy to share that starting today we’re introducing a Google Nest skill for Amazon Alexa to work with our newest cameras and doorbell that launched in 2021: the Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery), Nest Cam (indoor, wired), Nest Cam with floodlight and Nest Doorbell (battery).

Here’s all the details: Alexa now supports live view streaming from Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery), Nest Cam (indoor, battery), Nest Cam with floodlight and Nest Doorbell (battery) to Echo Show, Fire TV, or Fire Tablets. With the Nest Doorbell (battery), you can also engage in 2-way talk with visitors at your door through your Alexa-enabled devices (Echo, Echo Show, Fire TV, and Fire Tablet). Coming soon, Alexa will support announcements when any of these Nest Cams or Nest Doorbells detect a person at your front door. To learn more about all of these capabilities, be sure to stop by our Help Center

If you are already using both Amazon and Google Nest devices, don’t worry– our existing Alexa skills will continue to work with your favorite Nest devices. For example, you can continue to ask Alexa to adjust the temperature on your Nest Learning Thermostat or stream live video from your original Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Outdoor, and Nest Doorbell (wired) onto compatible Amazon devices.

We also know that many of you use the Google Nest ecosystem exclusively, and if that’s the case, most of these capabilities aren’t new to you. You can already see and speak with visitors at your door using a Nest smart display and Nest Doorbell, as well as use your voice and Google Assistant to stream live video. The same goes for chimes: Nest Doorbell users can already use Nest smart displays and smart speakers as audible chimes to announce when visitors press the doorbell (and with a Nest Aware Plus subscription and familiar faces, visitors can even be announced by name). You can also already use your voice and Google Assistant to stream live video from your Nest Cam or Nest Doorbell on Nest smart displays.

If you happen to try the Google Nest skill for Alexa, be sure to let us know what you think in the comments! As always, we love to hear your feedback.

Thanks all,

FAQs

How do I get started?

  • Set up your doorbell, camera, or floodlight in the Google Home App on iOS/Android.
  • Enable the Google Nest skill for Alexa in the Alexa Mobile App on iOS/Android.
  • Configure your settings to receive motion and doorbell press alerts:
    • In the Google Home App, go to your camera’s settings (Home view > Device tile > Settings (the gear icon) > Events > Seen events) and enable detection AND notifications for ‘Motion’
    • In the Alexa app, ensure that motion and doorbell press announcements are enabled under Devices > Cameras > (select the appropriate Nest camera or doorbell) > Settings

I own an Echo Show display and have a Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery), Nest Cam (indoor, wired), Nest Cam with floodlight, or Nest Doorbell (battery) installed at home already - What can I do?
In conjunction with our newest Nest Cams and Nest Doorbell that launched in 2021, you can:

  • Watch your camera and doorbell’s live view on your Echo Show, Fire TV, or Fire Tablet display. Simply say, “Alexa, show the [doorbell or camera name].”
  • Talk with a person through your doorbell by saying “Alexa, talk to the front door.”
  • Have Alexa announce when someone presses your Nest Doorbell (battery) or when your doorbell detects motion (additional setting to be enabled in the Alexa app)

Will these new Alexa capabilities work with the original Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam IQ Indoor, Nest Cam IQ Outdoor or my Nest Doorbell (wired)?

For our Nest Cams and Nest Doorbell launched before 2021 (Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Outdoor, and Nest Doorbell (wired)), Alexa supports live view on Echo Show and Fire TV.

Are all Nest skill features available in the US also available in other countries where the Nest skill is available?

Alexa functionality varies by country, so skill availability may change depending on this.

Where can I learn more about these new Alexa skills?

Why can't the Chromecast with Google TV support live view of Nest cams?

Out of the blue, all my family members can’t access the lock except me. Now my family members have to use my passcode in access the lock. Kinda frustrating.

This alert on alexa for motion only seems to work for generic motion and does not respond to people, animals or vehicles. So it skills the common events. They should at least report as motion too

Great but does Google home support announcement?

Why are we prioritizing Alexa integration vs better Nest Cam UX? We can’t delete individual videos and history without deleting everything, we can’t password/code protect the ability to delete Or specific videos, which sucks.

Great to see this but when will you support Alexa doorbell press etc on the nest doorbell wired? You still sell the wired doorbell along side the battery one. It’s more expensive. The comparison info does not show the limitations you are setting out here. The comparison in the smart home integration is identical also. And should clearly state the differences! So why are you only supporting the battery doorbell?

I’m beyond astonished and dismayed that

A. Google nest cameras do not send notification to a google nest mini when an outdoor camera event has occurred. A phone notification in the middle of the night will never be enough.

B. If youre going to integrate with Alexa(a good thing)…go the distance. To only do motion alerts but not People alerts is simply hollow. Im far more concerned with an unwanted person on my property…than a bug on my camera, a tree blowing, headlights from a car across the street, etc.

Come on guys…make it make sense. ADT sold me these cameras. If I had researched the lack of event notification options, would never have gotten them. Regret it…hope Google catches up to the times rather quickly.

This is such a big gap in the current product.

I just installed a new Google Nest Gen 2 wired doorbell and hooked it up to Alexa with the recently released Google nest skill only to find out that person event announcements are still not supported…the Support docs are literally incorrect.  There’s no option in the skill to enable person announcements.  …1+ years after the new doorbell, above complaints and new skill release.

General motion announcements are horrible for most customers.  They go off constantly for bugs, wind, rain, etc

Google, is anyone home?

I had to use the google nest display to get the alert. Since its just not useful with the alexa device.
