Hey everyone,

Keeping an eye on the activity around your home just got even easier– so easy that you don’t have to take your eyes off your TV. Starting this week, you will be able to watch the video feed from all of your Nest Cams and Nest Doorbells using Chromecast with Google TV!

If you’re ready to make home security part of your normal channel rotation, check out all the details below:

Which cameras can you stream on Chromecast with Google TV?

Starting soon, all Nest Cams and Nest Doorbells will be supported, including our latest devices that were released in 2021:  the Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery), Nest Cam (indoor, wired), Nest Cam with floodlight and Nest Doorbell (battery).

How does it work?

  • Chromecast Voice Remote: Simply use your voice remote to say which device you want to stream the live feed from. For example, just say “show me the front door camera” to see your doorbell feed.
  • Other Google Assistant-enabled devices: Use your Nest speaker or display and say, “Hey Google, show me the front door camera on my TV”

We hope this feature makes viewing your camera feed a breeze! Let us know your favorite way to view your camera feed in the comments below.

Also not working for me with battery Nest doorbell and android Sony TV. Thinking of switching smart echo system to other than Google as more & more of these hidden removal of features keeps happening.

Thi is very frustrating.l

Did anyone ever get this working?, here in Canada, two battery cams, one doorbell, one google cam, Google cam is constantly powered and I recharge the doorbell.

Both just say still not supported and I have check all the usual WiFi stuff and whatnot.

Solutions?

Nope, still not working. Not for me and not for anybody I know. Seems this announcement was 3 months premature (and counting). Slow clap for poor customer service by a company that's dropped 30% in value and is cancelling product after product.

😥🤷 Sad, and frustrating. You see an advertised product that does not do as advertised. I'm Pushing 40 and I remember things being different in the past.

Hello @Leticia - This feature still does not work.  This erodes my faith in the Google/Nest product ecosystem.

Comments for this post indicate that nobody has this working on their home systems.

There are a few options here.

A. Retract the original post and provide an updated timeframe of when these features should be available.

B. Provide a breakdown of witch specific devices and software versions are necessary for these features to work properly and what dates these versions were released.

C. Update the post to respond to client concerns - or direct us to the proper support channels.

Nest/Google have me seriously considering other options, and there are many available now.

Just bring back the nest tv app and let all cameras work in the nest app.

Agree with other members.  Google TV vs Android TV is splitting hairs.

Make this work in Shield, the most powerful streaming box in your lineup. This is nuts.

The support between the camera department and the Home department, which manages the Nest displays, is abysmal.  One tries to blame the other and they constantly transfer back and forth.  To have functionality that was removed from the Gen1 Outdoor Camera and still not have it over a year later is astonishingly poor customer service.  Google does not care about what actually matters to customers or else they would have not have taken 3 steps back before releasing this camera.  I have a Google security system, which these also do not integrate with at all - this is probably the most frustrating.

I know someone previously asked about viewing the cameras from the web - it took multiple hours to get this out of someone today, but it's in public preview at home.google.com. At least one piece of functionality is back.

With that being said, you can manually select the camera from your Nest Hub display - swipe down, select cameras, and select the specific camera.  Video displays that way, even on the Gen1 Nest Hub.

I have a feeling that streaming via any voice method does not work, since this still does not even work with Chromecast.

When will this functionality be enabled?  I love that a community manager drops some information and then never responds.

I think this functionality is a problem with any voice command - including to any Nest Hub display.  The Nest Hub will show the camera, but only if you swipe down, select cameras, and then select the specific camera.  This works even on a Gen1 Nest Hub.

Someone asked about viewing from the web - home.google.com.  This is in public preview, but it's essentially the replacement for home.nest.com.

It's astonishing that Google took 3 steps back with this camera.  They simply do not care what customers actually need or else we would not have received a half-baked camera (despite the image quality being superior over the Gen1 Outdoor Camera).

Don't get me started with these new cameras not integrating at all with the Nest security system.

Also, can confirm that this ONLY works with the Chromecast with Google TV dongles.  I successfully had my Nest Cam Battery (powered) to cast on my Chromecast with Google TV dongle.  Yes, the slow device that you put on a bedroom tv - you know the one you don't regularly use - super idea, Google!  It is an inferior device to my ShieldTV.  Again, they do not care.

and this is false advertising, because any voice command for these cameras does not work.

It would be great, except it doesn't work. I bought these cameras SPECIFICALLY so I could cast them. This is false advertising...

@Leticia When is this finally going to work?
My expensive Google doorbell so far has turned out to be the biggest rip-off ever.
During the trial period the facial recognition simply didn't work (many different people were recognized as the same and the option to move recognized faces into a known or a new person simply didn't work). Supposably this has been resolved, but Google won't reset my trial period so I can give it a proper test.
5 months ago you've announced casting to Chromecast is going to be added yet still there are no users who report this works. Horrible customer service this is!

Hi, I have android Tv and just get a camera with a line through it when I activate. The google assistant reply’s with “streaming camera name on TV name” get a spinning icon then a camera with line icon. Do I have a setting configured wrong somewhere or is this expected on Android tv? Thanks 🙏

Is your Android TV a Chromecast with Google TV device?

Roobarb70

@Cathal_S  It’s a Sony Android TV. (Not latest google tv)  Has Chromecast built in installed as a system app. Chromecast works as expected and TV appears in my google home app. Assistant seems to respond and starts to stream, just it fails to display feed, only a lined camera icon.

So I have the camera, not cheap, and the Chromecast, and cannot stream to tv at all. Regular ass Chromecast and the nest doorbell battery and a Google cam better, which is plugged in. I have Sen the announcements thta this works but it will not. This is garbage and I'm going to be selling all my Google devices, Over 50! And there is a few things that make this garbage, this is just one. Stay away, they won't help you if you ask either. So good luck!

Unfortunately the 2nd generation Nest cameras will only currently display on the Chromecast with Google TV and not other models of Chromecast, sorry.

Older 1st generation Nest cameras can still be viewed on all Chromecast devices and from the link below.

Thanks @Cathal_S   I had read this, but with so many conflicting comments about android tv I wanted to try. What’s odd is the behaviour from google assistant both on the tv, or from another assistant device is that it is streaming. It just can’t load the video and I get the icon. I can stream at home.google.com ok on a pc or phone. If I use the browser on the TV I get a video load error there too, all on the same network. Sort of makes me think it’s some kind of permission or network related rule on the TV. Shame, would be a useful feature.

I am just another user myself so I don't know what or why Google has this restriction?

I have 2 Chromecasts with Google TV, neither will display my Google doorbell (battery), it thinks it is displaying when I tell it to, but the screen shows a camera with a line through it. What is going on?

Same issue, I have four Chromecast with remote, both nest cameras worked in December 2022 on all displays, I went to show a friend yesterday and now I have a video camera with line through it on all my Chromecast devices. All devices bought in December, no network changes, cameras work on phones, iPad and home displays, just not my google Chromecast with remotes, one is a 4k others are HD versions. What changed with google? Frustrated as I’m trying to give google a chance… also, I subscribe to nest aware… any advice?

I have 4 x Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen), 2 x Nest Cam Indoor (2nd gen), and a Nest Doorbell (battery). Whenever I try to stream any of the cameras to my Chromecast with Google TV, I just get a camera with a line through it icon. Seems it's completely broken.

I have the latest 4K Chromecast and 2nd Gen Wired Doorbell and when I attempt to stream the cameras on Chromecast, I get a camera with a line through it.

Same here. Just got a Nest wireless doorbell and get a camera with a line through it while trying to stream to a Google TV.

Hi everyone,

I have reported that Nest 2nd Gen cameras are not displaying on Chromecast with Google TV devices to the Google Nest team.

Thank you!

Hi again,

The team has suggested trying a sequential reboot on the devices (Wi-Fi router, Nest Cameras, Google Home devices, Chromecast with Google TV) and check if the same issue will persist? Also, perform a factory reset on the Chromecast with Google TV.

Please keep us posted.

Thank you, however I will live without it, this could be a couple hours of work for a feature that worked fine and just stopped on all devices… if I am going to that extreme, I will change systems completely to Apple or Alexa…..

No change after following suggested steps.  The camera stream works fine on my phone, nest hub and pc, but not on Chromecast.

Martinbutcher20

No change here either after following steps suggested. That's on both my Chromecasts with Google TV.

As I suspected, a Google issue. I noticed along with this issue, that some of my routines were missing the Activate toggle, well today those toggles came back, and when I checked my camera function on chromecast, video has returned and I am now able to view my cameras on my chrome cast with remotes. Looks like the issue has been fixed.

My cameras are now successfully streaming over Chromecast again. I made no changes, but I was converted to the Preview program today.

Hi again everyone.

I have just tested my cameras and also asked another Chromecast product expert @CarlosS to check their cameras and both of ours are displaying again.

Can you please check and respond if you are still having issues.

Thanks,

Cathal

I’m now getting a different camera icon with the message “camera feed is not available”. Maybe that’s because I’m on chrome cast on Android tv.

Martinbutcher20

Just tested my Chromecasts with Google TV, both now display my Google doorbell (battery). I have changed nothing, so Google must have fixed it 👍

I'm on a 2020 Sony Android TV (with Google TV launcher) in the UK (I have two new indoor cams, one outdoor cam, and a battery doorbell). Still not working for me.

Google Nest 2nd generation cameras will only currently display on the Chromecast with Google TV device and not TV's with Chromecast built-in, sorry.

MateyMax88

@Cathal_S - when you say "currently" - does this mean that this feature is planned? The assistant launches the feed - but the feed cannot be displayed... It should definitely be technically possible 🙂

Sorry I don't know, I am just another user myself and Google hasn't shared any information about if they plan to support older generation Chromecast devices or TV's with Chromecast built-in.

Currently you can only view these cameras on the Chromecast with Google. I have some 1 generation Nest cameras that don't display on the Chromecast with Google TV either.

@Cathal_S no worries mate... Looks like Google wants to sell more of their new stuff 😉

I've found yet another piece of functionality that Google has taken away with this "replacement" camera.  You cannot create individual video clips as you previously could in the Nest app.  Need to create a video to share with the cops of a robbery, even though you have 24/7 recording and connected to power outlet, nope.  This Nest team needs some serious overhaul and some immediate understanding of customer needs, especially considering they are continually taking away functionality without any understanding if it's a benefit to customers.  I just received notice from Brinks that they will no longer be supporting cellular backup of the Nest security system at the end of 2023, so I will have every Google/Nest device removed by the end of this year.  Happy to move to a company with products designed with the customer in mind, not just what a company thinks users want.

There have been many comments just like this for about a year.  For now all you can do is put your phone into "screen record" mode,  go back the Google Home app and play the section you need to send to someone, then stop the recording and send the saved clip from your phone.

I have a 2021 Sony TV and am still unable to stream my doorbell and floodlight camera’s feed… is it really a case of the built in Chromecast/Google TV not being able to perform this feature at all?

JosefK1

Hi... I have Chromecast plugged into an LG smart TV. Is there a way to automatically display who is ringing my Nest doorbell (battery) on the TV? That would be cool. Thanks.
