1st Gen Doorbell Hell

My 1st Gen doorbell has been disconnected for a long time. I've started to wonder why I'm paying for a useless subscription. I decided this afternoon to really try to fix it. The 1st problem I ran into was seeing the code on the back of the thing. Eventually I found a video that showed how to release the doorbell from its mount. Found the QR code but then the Nest app wanted me to reset the doorbell. Their instructions told me to push the release button and doorbell at the same time and wait for some chime to finish. I didn't get a chime and the doorbell didn't reset. I found another video that said use the tool (in my case a thumbtack) and press down in the little hole toward the top of the back of the unit. My unit had such a hole, but it didn't reset the doorbell as far as the Nest app was concerned. I'm stymied and if something doesn't change soon I'll simply stop paying for the **bleep** subscription.

@SteveChandler

To factory rest a 1st gen Google Nest Hello Doorbell, you need to use hold down the reset pin in the hole on the back of the doorbell (using the release tool or a paperclip or thumbtack) while simultaneously holding down the big doorbell button on the front:

See the factory reset instructions here:

Hopefully, it will work for you.

Thanks, that worked, but it didn't seem to find either of my wifi networks (home and extender), so I'm dead in the water. I kept getting an error saying that something went wrong. I know what went wrong, someone sold me a Google product.

Hi SteveChandler,

Thanks for posting in the community.

I'm sorry to hear that you still can't connect your Doorbell 1st Gen to your WiFi network, even after following the factory reset instructions from EmptyNester and MplsCustomer. Don’t worry, I'm here to assist you.

To provide better support, please answer the following questions:

  • What color is the LED light on your doorbell?
  • Which WiFi frequency band are you trying to connect to (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)?
  • Are you receiving any error messages?
  • How far is your doorbell from the router?
  • Can you see the doorbell on your Nest app devices?

Based on the information provided, I recommend the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check the Nest service status: Occasionally, the Nest service may be down, causing devices to appear offline. If this is the case, other products might also be offline.
  2. Check for interference: Almost every network is subject to wireless interference, which can cause problems when you connect your device to the Google Home app or Nest app. Other devices that operate on a 2.4 GHz frequency may interfere with the Doorbell ability to communicate with the Wi-Fi router or access point. Please turn off any devices that may cause interference, then try to reconnect the Doorbell to the WiFi network again. Wireless interference can be caused by interference from walls and floors, interference from nearby WiFi networks, interference from other electronics, cordless phones, baby monitors, microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and wireless video equipment.
  3. Use a different network or hotspot: If possible, try connecting the doorbell to a different network or hotspot to isolate the inconvenience.

Please let me know if these recommendations help resolve the inconvenience. I'm here to assist you further.

Best regards,

Virna
