3 outdoor nest cams keep going offline

We have 2 of 3 cameras located on our metal building that keep going offline. We have several on our house and don’t have any problems.

Our internet is good and never goes out. The router is in our house and we have an extender in our building. I understand metal can be hard to have a signal however we haven’t really had issues. The cameras are constantly plugged into a power source.

someone recommended getting an extender for the current extender. I’m not sure if that would help. Is the building the cause for them going online/offline temporarily? Is there something else it could be? We are at our wits end with this issue and it is vital for these cameras to work at all times. Any help is greatly appreciated! I’m hoping someone has encountered the same problem.

Hi @Momto2boys,

Thanks for reaching out to the community. I understand that your Nest Cams Outdoor, located in a metal building, are going offline constantly for no apparent reason, even though your internet connection is stable and never drops out because you use an extender. It's especially concerning since you have other Nest Cameras in your house that don't have this problem. I appreciate the detailed information you've shared. Don't worry, we can work together to figure out why your Nest Cameras are going offline. I have a few questions for you:

  • Are your Nest Cameras wired or battery-powered? If battery-powered, are they also connected to a hardwire?
  • What color is the status light on your Nest Cameras when they go offline? For more information about the lights, you can visit the following article: Nest camera and doorbell lights and sounds.
  • How far are your outdoor Nest Cameras from your router?
  • What Wi-Fi frequency band are you trying to connect to (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)?
  • Are there any other devices or appliances (like baby monitors, microwaves, or cordless phones) near your Nest Cameras?
  • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps so far?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Regards,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

The cameras are battery powered however they are all plugged into outlets at all times.

im unsure of the color of the status light. I will have to check that tomorrow.

the router is located inside our home. It is always from the cameras on the outside of our shop however that’s why we have the extender. I believe the extender is doing its job. I tested the signal strength on my phone while connected to the extender.

i am connected to 2.4.

as mentioned above, the cameras in question are installed outside on our metal building.

i don’t know what else to do. I’ve unplugged them and plugged them back in. It’s normally very intermittent when they go offline and then they come back on their own sometimes after a short time. Today, they’ve been offline the majority of the day and have not come back. These 3 cameras are essential to our security monitoring and we cannot have them being unreliable.

please help. I’m at my wits end with these. We have paid a lot of money for these as well as our monitoring.

Hi @Momto2boys,

Thanks for your response and the answer to the previous questions. I understand how important it is to have your Nest cameras working perfectly. Let's try these steps to get them back online:

  • Since all your cameras are offline, please restart your router and modem, and then try to connect again.
  • Nest cameras may not work with certain types of networks. Please check if your network uses any of the following: Enterprise networks that require a username and password (also known as 802.1x), guest networks that require you to sign in through a web page (captive portals), and WPS to connect. If you're using one of these, you may need to adjust your network settings or switch to a different network. You can find more information aboutWi-Fi networks that are incompatible or aren’t recommended.
  • Please run a speed test. Nest Cameras need a stable internet connection to upload video. Please run a speed test on your Wi-Fi network to confirm that your internet speed meets the minimum requirements for your device.

Please keep me updated.

Regards,
Jonathan
