Automatic home/away settings?

Just installed a Nest battery doorbell, wired into a transformer and chime.  My wife and I both have Google accounts, we both have Home installed on our phones (Android for me, iPhone for her) and our accounts are both admins in the home.  The doorbell camera is at our front door, looking over our driveway and the street.  We have an activity zone set up to cover our driveway so we don't get notified every time someone drives or walks past our house.

What I'm trying to work out is this - is it possible to have this set up so that we only get notified of certain activity e.g. people or vehicles on the driveway whilst neither of us are at home?  I did enabled "Away-only notifications" in the doorbell settings, that made no difference.  The text there mentions "presence sensing" but I can't find any mention of that elsewhere in the Home app.

Hi @8bit,

Thanks for posting. I understand you're looking for an automatic home/away setting on your Nest Doorbell to notify you of certain activities when you're away. I appreciate the detailed information you shared. No worries, I'd be glad to share more details with you. To better assist you, I have a few questions:

  • Does the Google Home/Nest app have "Always" location access on all relevant phones, including the precise location? The app requires location permissions to be enabled in your phone settings.
  • Do you have the correct address set up in your Google Home?

Also, let's try the following steps to turn presence sensing on:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Tap Settings.
  • In the "Home features" section, tap Presence sensing.
  • Turn Allow this home to use phone locations on or off.

Please keep me updated on how it goes.

Cheers,
Jonathan
