Cam turns off when removed from magnetic mount

When setting up the Nest Cam (battery), the app asks what type of mount the cam will be attached to. The choices are magnetic base or assorted threaded mounts. I selected one of the threaded versions. However, the cam turns off unless I place the cam on the magnetic base that came with it. Please advise.

Good question. I’d bought the new floodlight with cam since they don’t sell the floodlight by itself like Ring does and had wanted to use the camera that came with it on another spot outside my home since I already have two Nest Cam IQ Outdoors, but I noticed the same thing, the new Nest Cam Battery camera stops working when not connected to the magnetic mount, and they don’t sell the mount so I’m returning the whole thing.

I wonder if they do it to deter thefts, so the cam only works with a mount you can only get when buying the camera.

As I mentioned, the cam has a threaded female fitting so it can be used with alternate mounts. During setup, the Home app asks which mount you’ll be using.

Are you talking about the threaded hole at the bottom where the security screw goes?

On the floodlight, there’s a charging chord that goes from the floodlight and connects to the magnetic camera charging port and has a hole where you put the security screw through it into that threaded hole at the bottom of the cam to keep the camera secured since Google says when the cam is set up at a height over 6-6.5ft it needs to be secured to prevent it from falling.

Maybe it can also be used as a mount? I didn’t see that question about the mounting options during setup since I wasn’t the one doing the app setup. But we called Google and they said they don’t sell outdoor mounts so…

Yes, we’re both describing the same threaded port. If this forum allowed pics to be uploaded, I could share a screen capture of the app’s query of mount choice.  Otherwise, there’s two other references about the port. Using the Home app, you will see the mount mentioned in Settings>Device Information. Mine says ‘Made for Google or Google Nest mount’. Additionally, there is a Google support article (Here) that says, “You can also use any 3rd party mount with a 1/4-20 thread, but it may affect the performance of your camera.”  I can’t imagine what the disclaimer is describing. The fine print of Google’s products can be a rabbit hole.

Brad, do YOU see an answer to my question? There’s zero documentation from Google explaining this intentional behavior.
