Camera Face incorrectly Tagging People

RustyShakelford
Community Member

I’ve read through a lot of the mis-tagging of faces,  it I’m experiencing something different.

I have only one camera, and it is constantly mis-identifying people in videos. For example, John Doe is already listed as a familiar face. When the camera sees someone different, like a completely different person, sometimes 100 pounds lighter or a completely different skin color, it will label them as John Doe in the video clip, but it won’t actually add the face that created that trigger to the familiar face library for John Doe. When it does this, there is absolutely no way for me to correct the mis-identification is the system.

Also, there doesn’t appear to be a way for me to change the name of the tagged face in the actual video clip. Either change the name or just remove the name all together since it might have been a UPS driver, for example.

I understand it won’t always catch a face or it might mis-label a face, but it not actually putting the picture in the library seems like it might be a bug.

Am I just missing something here or is this just a severe limitation of the system?

Hey there,

Thank you for bringing up the concern you're experiencing, I would love to look into this further for you. The first troubleshooting step that I'd recommend would be to restart your device. This process should keep all your settings, and reconnect it to the same Wi-Fi network. This is helpful if it ever freezes, has connection problems, or isn't working normally. If you still see faces that are missed, or if it's still not showing the faces, please let me know.

Best regards,
Brad

Hi everyone,

@RustyShakelford It's us again. I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. Nest camera events are designed to be as accurate as possible, but your Nest Camera or Nest Doorbell may misidentify certain things.

Here are some examples:

  • Your Nest Camera confuses a picture with a real event. For example, a t-shirt with a picture of a dog on it might trigger an animal detection event.
  • Your Nest Camera mistakes a person crawling on the ground as a pet.
  • Your Nest Camera has trouble distinguishing between close relatives.

In the following scenarios, try to tweak your camera’s view away from these objects to avoid false person or face alerts.

  • If there’s a mirror, your Nest Camera might mistake a person and their reflection as two people.
  • If there’s a TV, your camera might confuse someone on the screen as an actual person inside your home.

Hit this link to troubleshoot your familiar face detection.

I appreciate the help, Brad and MplsCustomer.

Thanks,

Emerson

Hello, Sorry about the delay. I’ve restarted my camera a couple times and even moved where it’s mounted at. I’m still having the same issues.

Hey there,

I’m sorry for the delay. There are a few ways to find and categorize unfamiliar faces in the Google Home app.

Here’s how:

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap Settings > Nest Aware > Familiar face detection.
  3. If your camera has detected new people, you can tap New faces to find and categorize them.
  4. For each new face, tap Yes, No, or Not a person. Then, follow the on-screen prompts to identify the face.

To find anything you’ve tagged as Not a person, go to Familiar face detection > tap Options > Faces that aren’t people.

The Feed:

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap the Feed tab.
  3. Choose the unfamiliar face event or group of events.
  4. Tap Add to face library, and then follow the prompts to identify each face your camera didn’t recognize.

Camera event details:

  1. Tap the camera event in the Feed or home history.
  2. Once the clip is open, swipe up for more details.
  3. In the “Faces” category, tap Manage, then follow the prompts to identify the faces your camera didn’t recognize.

Let me know how it goes.

I appreciate the help, Brad and Emerson.

Thanks,

JT

You should be able to edit and move faces around to different recognized faces. Do you show the option to do so in the Google Home app? As this is a learning system, going through and removing those names that are wrong are definitely going to help improve this function.

Thanks for your help here, JT and Archie, and Emerson.

Best regards,

Brad

Hello everyone,

@RustyShakelford I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. How's it going with your Nest Camera? We would appreciate it if you could share with us the information we're asking above. So that we could take a closer look and assist you further.

I appreciate the help, Archie, JT and Brad.

Regards,
Emerson

I don’t mean to be rude, but I’ve answered this a couple times now, but I keep getting asked the same question.

I’ve tried what has been mentioned with trouble shooting, but those topics don’t cover the issues I’m having.

People keep telling me to use the familiar faces section to re name faces as needed, but this isn’t the issue I’m having.

I think the best answer I can give is what I mentioned on December 28th.

This Familiar Faces technology can misidentify some people, and as it's a learning system, it may take time to identify that user correctly. Please share your experience with us in the app. We’re always looking for ways to improve, and appreciate your feedback. You can send it at any time using your devices, following the steps found here

Best regards,
Brad

The issues that I mentioned does still happen, but not as often. I’ve even deleted the names associated with the faces in an attempt to reset it, and it did appear to help a little, but it still happens.

It just appears that there is no way to fix this, at least at this point in time.
