Can’t Enable Camera Notifications

ASLguy
Community Member

I have a dropcam, and I converted my Nest account over to a Google account, and for some reason I cannot enable notifications for that camera on my iPhone. I have tried, but it won’t let me enable notifications. I’m wondering if this changed with a recent iOS update, or if, it’s a server side issue. It’s been an issue for about a week or so.

@ASLguy

Is the option missing in the Google Nest app?

You could try deleting and reinstalling the Google Nest app on your iPhone.

No. The option is there, but when I click on Push Notifications, Email notifications, or sound notifications it won’t actually enable.

@ASLguy

Well, you don't lose any settings if you delete and re-install the Google Nest app. You just log back on.

I tried that; same problem persists.

@ASLguy

Strange.

If you go to the home.nest.com website in a browser on a computer, can you enable notifications there?

Can you view your camera in the Google Nest app or on the home.nest.com website?

Same thing on the web. The settings won’t stay after I change them.

@ASLguy

I'm stumped.

You could try restarting your camera by unplugging to for 10 seconds.

Thank you for bringing this to me. I'd love to look into this for you. A Factory Reset can be beneficial when a typical restart doesn't quite do the trick to resolve what you're experiencing. This is helpful if it ever freezes, has connection problems, or isn't working normally.

Before you factory reset your device, please be aware:

  • Your camera’s personalized settings will revert to default settings.
  • Your camera’s entire video history and snapshots will be deleted. Once your video history and snapshots are deleted, they’re gone forever. They cannot be recovered. We do not keep backups.

Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions or concerns.

Best regards,
Brad

I followed these steps and the issue is still happening. I am unable to enable notifications.

It sounds like it may be specific to your device maybe. Try contacting Apple support.

It is not specific to my device. It is the same on the web, on both of my iPads, and on both of my iPhones. Nest/Google created the apps; I believe this is an app issue that needs to be address by your app developers.

@ASLguy

I'm just another Google Nest customer, but it does seem that this might be specific to just one device, your Dropcam, though I have no idea why @Brad  suggested contacting Apple.

Did you try a factory reset by removing your Dropcam from the Google Nest app (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9252162?hl=en#zippy=%2Cnest-cam-or-dropcam), and then reinstalling?

I have done that @Brad ‘s suggestion. Nothing changed.

I'm having the same issue. I have two cameras on the nest app. One is my original dropcam and that's the one with the issue. The second camera is a nestcam and I can set the notifications on that one. This happened one time in the past to both cameras and other people were having the same problem. Then something was done on the company's end and they both worked again. I don't think it's our specific cameras.

I'm having the same issue.

Tried restarting the camera. It did not help.

I don't think it's us. I think it's a glitch in their system.

Hi @ASLguy. did u call Goggle to open a ticket? I’ve been on the phone with them and am away from my camera for a week but they don’t seem to want to do anything until I can do a factory reset. They are aware of the Community postings but don’t seem to have any open tickets to be able to work the issue.

I emailed them but no response.

I think its better to call them. It takes awhile but I think its more effective. I just spent about 45 minutes with them on the phone and I was able to get my issue/ticket escalated a couple levels. They are now investigating the issue. I think the more people that log the issue, the more they will pay attention.

What’s the phone number? Online support is a joke. I’ve sent screen recordings and they’re still like “Make sure the check mark is there.”

:::facepalm::

Sir, that’s the WHOLE point of me contacting you.

I'm having the same issue.

I was able to see past posts on this site and it happened back in December 2021. All of a sudden it started working again. It was something with Nest, not with our cameras.

I've been having the same issue, I'm trying to get push notifications on - check the box and then it immediately gets unchecked.  Super frustrating.

Edit - also an older dropcam pro. My other one works fine, all the other newer nest cams also are fine.

same issue here. How annoying!

I have the same issue.  I click on a notification but it immediately erases the check mark. It only happens on older dropcams. ( I have 10 different cams: dropcams, NestCams, indoor, outdoor). I tried iPhone and iPad apps  with the same issue.  I tried on the nest website, the  check mark initially stays on but if you reload the page you see that the check marks are once again off. I NEED to enable notifications as I am going on a trip and need to monitor a SENSITIVE area.

I have the same problem for all my Dropcam Pros.

Well this is not good news from my support email thread:

Our Engineering support responded. They stated that the dropcams are no longer receiving any firmware update and the Nest app is up to date that's why the push notification for the dropcam no longer responds.

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Customer Care Team.

Thanks for the update ASLguy.  That sounds unfortunate.

As an aside, 2 of my dropcams have notifications that refuse to turn off.  Almost like they are stuck in that configuration. If the engineering team is reading this, i need to at least turn those notifications off so that I'm not flooded with push notifications and forced to mute the app.

Hopefully by now everyone has received the email offer of up to 2 free Google Nest cams to replace the DropCams that are sunsetting a year from now.

Also, my notifications started working again and are able to be enabled/disabled in the Nest app. So it looks like it’s fixed for me at least. My new cam should arrive late this week.

Can confirm that my notifications started working again too. Thanks Google/Nest team.
