Google Home Web App? (Nest App support for new cams?)

DangerDeMort
Community Member

So - new user, I saw one or two closed threads about this from earlier in the year... Anyone have an update about either seeing my new cams in the Nest app (especially web app) or getting a Google Home web app?  I already provided feedback on the phone app.

I thought "Bluestacks" emulator might be able to run Google Home app, but I have an M1 mac, so nope.  I really just want to watch my dogs while I'm at work, is that such a ridiculous thing to ask?

Disappointed at the lack of transparency about the Nest/Home schism that means I have to use both apps, and can't view on the web, but now I have quite an investment 😞

@DangerDeMort

We also have an M1 iMac where BlueStacks won't run.

A year ago, Google Nest's Vice President posted the following blog, in which he said:

"we are committed to bringing the experiences and Nest devices you have come to love in the Nest app into the Home app."

"we’ve also been working on rolling out a desktop experience for the Google Home app, so the new Nest cameras and doorbell feeds can be viewed and controlled from there. This will launch in 2022."

"we commit to being more transparent with you on where we are taking the camera portfolio."

There has been no update whatsoever since then.

So we've been running 2 apps for a year now.

9to5 is reporting that at the upcoming Pixel7 event on October 6ht there might be some new Nest products.  I am trying not to get my hopes up but maybe there will be new info on improvements to the Google Home app and maybe a web interface.  Here is the article....

@EmptyNester

I do not think the Oct. 6 "Made by Google" event is likely to deliver on Google Nest Vice President Rishi Chandra's Sept. 29, 2021 promise that they are "are committed to bringing the experiences and Nest devices you have come to love in the Nest app into the Home app" or that they are "working on rolling out a desktop experience for the Google Home app, so the new Nest cameras and doorbell feeds can be viewed and controlled from there. This will launch in 2022." After all, Chandra also said "we commit to being more transparent with you on where we are taking the camera portfolio" but nothing at all has been shared since then (https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Blog/Message-from-our-GM-Updates-for-our-Nest-customers/ba-p/...).

Google's own publicity refers only to "the latest Google Pixel devices" and "additions to the Nest smart home portfolio" (https://store.google.com/intl/en/ideas/articles/google-fall-launch-event/).

Hey folks,

I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. I hope that sheds some light on the issue.

I appreciate the help, EmptyNester and MplsCustomer.

Thanks,

Archie

Hi MplsCustomer.  I was thinking that sentence that said "We’ll also announce additions to the Nest smart home portfolio" might include the kind of updates you are I are both hoping for.   Do you have any idea what does this sentence hints at?

@EmptyNester

I have no idea what "additions to the Nest smart home portfolio" might mean. But since it's so vague and doesn't mention cameras, I'm doubtful it includes "bringing the experiences and Nest devices...in the Nest app into the Home app" or "rolling out a desktop experience for the Google Home app", as promised a year ago. And it's not "being more transparent...on where we are taking the camera portfolio", as also promised.

Another 9to5 article hinting at the new Google Nest Doorbell that records 24/7 is coming soon.  Here is the link including some pictures. (Fingers crossed they get it right).

I don't have an M1 Mac to try but:

https://developer.android.com/studio

When you download it lets you choose Intel or Apple chip for download.

It's development tool for android apps, but it has built in emulator. The documentation does show you can emulate a Google Pixel 5 and choose Android 11 or 12 images. (Google Home won't show on Google Play store unless you have Android 8 minimum)

If I did have M1 Mac I would give it a go as love tinkering. Just until when or if Google releases web browser access it might be good option from what I read on their documentation.

@qapnguyen

Thanks, but I guess I'm not interested in using a developer's tool to try and shoehorn the Google Home app into running on our iMac.

Hi FatBeehive,

We’re sorry for the trouble here. Let’s get this sorted — a few questions: what types of Nest cameras do you have? How far are the cameras from the router? Do you have mesh WiFi points? What’s the make and model of your phone? Also, what WiFi frequency band do you try to connect to (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

JT

I have three nest 3rd gen cameras

2 are connecting to the wifi via the app, one does not connect even if I try plugging it into a laptop

The camera is within 5 meters of a mesh wifi port and 15 meters of the actual router with no walls inbetween

I have an Apple iPhone x

Wifi sending at 2.4 , 2.5  and 5g

Kind regards

Rob (Fat Beehive)

Hey FatBeehive,

I'm sorry for the delay. Could you tell us the exact error message you're getting? What's the status light of your camera? Were you able to try setting it up near your Wi-Fi router? Have you tried restarting the camera and Wi-Fi router to refresh the connection? Also, resetting it to its factory reset might do the trick. Here's how to Restart or factory reset Nest camera or doorbell.

Let me know how it goes by replying to this thread.

Thanks,
Archie
