Google Nest 2nd generation Wired Door bell Chime Not working after 10 minutes.

Hello All,

I have been struggling with Google 2nd generation wired doorbell for a while now.  The main issue is Chime works ONLY for 10 or 15 minutes after removing while Chime connector.  The doorbell video and announcements are working fine.

I have a 16V new transformer and a new electronic chime (IQ America Step-Up Wired Satin Nickel Door Chime DW-2840).  The main issue is that the white Chime connector gets a little hot, and I think the whole system does not work. Also, when Chime works, it takes 30 to 40 seconds for Chime to ring.   If I remove Google Nest Doorbell and close the circuit immediately, manually connecting two wire chime rings every time.  I am not sure what the issue is, and Google Nest Customer Service thinks it may be a transformer and asked me to have a Google Nest Pro technician visit to solve my problem.   I did RMA and changed to a new Doorbell (an entirely new thing), but the issue persists.

Has anyone faced a similar issue with Google Nest Doorbell?  The primary function of the Doorbell is not working and it is quite a frustrating experience.

Any help or pointers will be genuinely appreciated.  Does anyone have any compatible 16V chime with Google Nest Wired 2nd gen?  Please share a link. I will replace the chime.

Thanks,

Bhavesh

@Bmistry13

Does your transformer meet Google Nest's requirements? (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247132) Quite a few customers in this forum report upgrading to a 16V 30VA transformer for the 2nd gen Google Nest Doorbell; that's what we have with our Nest Hello doorbells.

Have you turned on the "Electronic chime" option in the Google Home app for your doorbell?

Is your "chime puck" wired correctly, as in these wiring diagrams? (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/12153643)

Perhaps there is something about your "IQ America Step-Up Wired Satin Nickel Door Chime DW-2840" that does not work with the new doorbell. I tried searching for specs for your chime, but couldn't find any.

My Transformer is 16V (North America) and is a brand new construction so newer transformer.  Everything about Doorbell is working fine except for Chime ( Chime works after disconnecting and reconnecting for 10 minutes only).  The chime connector is very securely connected to two screws and even if the pull wire does not come out.  You may find the chime manual here https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/4f/4fb6c186-83f0-4dbc-85b6-593d8e941ed3.pdf

 I am ok to replace Chime but I need the primary Doorbell functionality working properly.

@Bmistry13

Just to be clear, many customers, including us, have upgraded from a 16V 10VA transformer to a 16V 30VA transformer in order to get both the older and newer doorbells to function. Your manual refers to a 16V 10W transformer.

I see your chime's manual also says you need to use a diode across the terminals of the doorbell for the chime to work. I don't know why a diode would be required. (The "chime puck" for the Nest doorbell is designed to provide continuous power for the doorbell's camera without tripping the chime.)

I have no idea whether this diode should be used if you are installing a 2nd Gen Google Nest Doorbell instead of a conventional doorbell, or whether a Nest doorbell will or will not work with or without the diode.

Note: I am just another Google Nest customer, and am not an electrician.

@MplsCustomer ,  Thanks for taking the time to help me!  I am missing this piece it seems.  A contractor who installed it probably did not install this.  I will try to attach it and see if that works. Do you know if standard or any specification?   Once again you have been very helpful to point out something new to try.

@Bmistry13

I don't know anything about the diodes; the manual talks about them and how the polarity (which way they're connected) can make a difference.

@MplsCustomer ,  Thanks for your help!  I will try to connect diodes and see if that solves my problem.  Thanks a lot for your time and help!  I really appreciate it.

@Jeff , I added the front diodes behind the doorbell, but it did not work.  I will have to call electrical because I think this is a wiring issue on new construction.

I appreciate the update, Bmistry13.

We'll keep the thread going and you can let us know what you end up learning from an electrician. Hopefully the cause and fix are both simple. I'll follow up down the line, but definitely feel free to drop any new info as it comes along.

Thanks,

Jeff
