How to cover IR light without losing night vision?

vyegorov

We use the nest indoor cam as a baby monitor and the room is kept pitch dark at night (we also use black out shades). My kid is scared of the camera because the 2 red IR lights look like 2 red eyes. Any recommendations for how to cover those lights without losing night vision? Is there a third-party product like a cover or case to enclose the camera? Has anyone tried electrical tape?

We used to use the nest indoor cameras (black ones) and they didn’t have this issue. We now use those in other parts of the home but since those cameras don’t have the same features in Google home, we don’t want them

as a baby monitor.

Anyone else’s kids scared of those lights?

thanks!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this, as I can imagine it has been an inconvenience. I would love to look into this further for you. I am unaware of what you could do in this case, as the Night Vision feature would require them not to be covered. We can see if anyone from the community has any suggestions, though.

Best regards,
Brad

Hi! I haven’t had any suggestions yet so I think I might use the old nest cam in their room until there is no more night time scaries. Thanks!

Hi, yea! If you have any ideas or products to suggest that cover the IR lights (looks like 2 red eyes at night), that would help me and my toddlers 🙂

thanks!

Hi vyegorov,

We appreciate your interest however, we don't have any news to share about disabling and enabling the IR LEDs through the Nest app or Google Home app. We're always looking for ways to improve and we'll take it as feedback. We appreciate your response. I'd suggest you send feedback about your concern using this form to let the Google Engineering team know about your concern. While they won't respond directly back to you, this is the best way to let them know about this. Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns as I will be locking this after 24 hours. Feel free to start a new thread and we'll be happy to help.

Regards,

Emerson
