We are trying to figure out how to get some kind of notification when anyone presses the doorbell. Ideally it would ring the phone so that we could pay instant attention to it, whether we're home or away, and even if the phone is otherwise muted from other notifications. Second choice would be to give a unique notification sound instead of the standard notification sound that would instantly identify it as being the doorbell.
We do not have any other kind of "normal" indoor chimes to ring, only our phone(s) and so far this apparent shortcoming FOR THE MAIN FUNCTION OF A DOORBELL to make us re-hook up simple old fashioned buzzer and return the perhaps-too-fancy for us .
Sorry if this is answered elsewhere; have searched and all the other older threads get locked without providing an answer.
Thank you!

If you have one or more Alexa, Google setting up the notification to go to Alexa.

Hi all,
Thanks for posting in the community forum.
@1678, thanks for your suggestion; it's really helpful.
@davidaugust111, I understand that you'd like to receive a personalized notification on your phone when anyone presses your Nest Doorbell Wired (2nd gen), since you don't have an indoor chime in your home. I appreciate the information shared. No worries, help is here.
The Google Home app doesn't have an option to change or personalize the notification sound for any device. To receive personalized notifications about your Nest doorbell on your phone, whether you're home or away, you need to change the notification sound on your phone. Remember, your phone won't sound if it's in mute mode. If you don't receive your Nest doorbell notification, please check out the Google Home app notification settings and the permissions. To learn more about it, please visit the following article: Camera and doorbell alerts.
Also, since you don't have an indoor chime in your home, if you have a speaker, you can connect your Nest doorbell and activate the visitor announcement feature to receive your Nest doorbell notification there when someone presses it. To set the visitor announcement feature, please check out the next article: Get doorbell visitor announcements on a speaker or display.
Hope this information helps and clarifies your doubts. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Jonathan

Thank you both for your suggestions, I appreciate the effort!
Unfortunately neither seem to help. I can buy some cheap alexa speakers, but I already had a buzzer system that I could have continued using with the old fashioned doorbell, but that's of no help when one is away from home, which is the main advantage of using a wifi system.
Being unable to select a unique notification sound through the app means that I get the exact same sound when someone rings the doorbell, locks or unlocks the nest lock, a whatsapp message comes in, battery power is low on the phone, or many other apps on the phone that don't give me a choice of notification sounds.
I was hoping for something more like my neighbor's apartment building which rings your phone, let's you speak with whoever is at the door (even if you're not home) and buzz them in (I can unlock the nest lock from anywhere my phone has a signal).
