Nest 2nd Doorbell

Heidilynn18
Community Member

We installed a nest 2nd generation wired doorbell yesterday. Everything works. I have it on the Google Home app. My issue is I’m unable to get it on the nest app. When I go to add it, I get to this screen and nothing it says choose the last 4 digits of the serial number from the below list. No list ever pops up. I can only exit which makes me start adding all over again and I get to this same screen every time. I never had this problem with our other doorbell we had. We built a new house so new smart everything and this is the only thing giving me an issue

@Heidilynn18

The 2nd Generation Google Nest Doorbell does NOT work in the Google Nest app.

Google Nest decided that the new Google Nest cameras and doorbells released starting in Sept. 2021 would work ONLY in the Google Home app and NOT in the Google Nest app or on the home.nest.com website. We discovered this to our surprise when we bought a Google Nest Camera (Battery) in Sept. 2021, and have had to use 2 apps ever since to manage our mixture of old and new Google Nest cameras and doorbells.

You can livestream ALL of your Google Nest cameras and doorbells on the beta/preview website, home.google.com, but there's no history available.

And another "interesting" thing. You can see all your cameras/doorbells on the Google Home app, but for the event history, you have to go to the Nest App for the pre-2021 devices and to the Google Home app for the event history (and the live feed) for the newer devices.  It would be great if they consolidate it all in the Google Home app update that is forthcoming. It would be much cleaner.

Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback on this, I fully understand the frustrations of not having your new Nest cams in the Nest app like you may be used too. However, you can now use the Google Home web app to view your cameras and doorbells.

The new Nest cameras and doorbell are exclusive to the home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience with your speakers and displays. A Nest Aware subscription applies to all of your cameras, speakers, and displays in the same home structure. Thank you for your continued patience, and support.

Best regards,

Brad

I followed Brad's recommendation from a separate posting I had re the availability of event history for the cameras, and submitted feedback to Google developers (within the App) to enhance the Google Home App to include the ability to view event history for all Google Nest cameras (old and new) via the Google Home App. This would mean you don't have to go to the older Nest App to view the event history for the pre-2021 Google Nest cameras, as is the case currently.  If others make a similar recommendation, it may move up the timeframe for implementation of this feature.  Thanks.

Hey there,

Ontario1, thanks for letting us know. We appreciate you sharing your feedback with us!

Heidilynn18, we’re sorry for the trouble viewing your Nest Doorbell (2nd gen, wired) in the Nest app. The live video of the 2nd gen Nest cameras and doorbell aren’t available in the Nest app. They’re available for viewing in the Google Home app only, if you have both 1st gen and 2nd gen Nest cameras and doorbells, the live preview is available in the Google Home app.

Thanks for the help, MplsCustomer and Brad.

Best,

JT

Hey Community Specialists,

Just checking - you see how the ease of the nest app is so much better for viewing your camera feeds, right? I'm not here to be dismissive or petrty of google home app, I'm just trying to see if you guys see the difference. I'm always open top something new/progressive/better/streamlined.

But I don't see that in the Google home app. I don't use anything but the cameras and thermostat. Is there something coming to change this, or am I just not seeing how great the app already is? Honest question.

Thanks.

@MrWubbya

Once there is more information regarding what is coming to the apps, it will be shared with the community. However, we’re always looking for ways to improve, and appreciate your feedback. You can send it at any time using your devices, following the steps found here

Hello everyone,

@MrWubbya I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. How's it going with your Nest Doorbell? Were you able to read the information and check the link that Brad has shared to send your feedback? Also, aside from your feature request, let us know if you have more questions.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer, Brad and JT.

Thanks,

Emerson

Thanks to all the Community Specialists on this. I am OK at this point. (But I recognize this was Heidilynn18's initial post.) I think we are all anxiously awaiting an integrated update to the Google Home App (and the web version) that will have full functionality for all current and previous Google/Nest devices and also give us some set-up flexibility/customization to maximize utility. This will be an important step forward in Google's full incorporation of the Nest equipment.  Thanks,
