Nest Cam 2nd Router

Ralph1
Community Member

Hello. I have a larger home equipped with a 2nd router for proper WiFi coverage. I have a nest 3 pack but cannot get the camera connected to the 2nd router. I’ve tried a factory reset and setup still fails. My phone is connected to the 2nd router during setup.

I also can’t find anywhere in the home app to change WiFi settings

On older Nest cameras and doorbells, it was possible to go into the Google Nest app and change Wi-Fi settings for a Nest product. That is no longer the case; Google Nest no longer has any mechanism for updating Wi-Fi settings.

It seems your second router is using a different network name (SSID) and password as your first router, so you will have to remove your Google Nest Camera (Battery) from the Google Home app while you are connected to the Wi-Fi used to install it and while in the same Google Nest "home/structure" in which it was installed. Then you will need to do a factory reset. Then you will need to reinstall the camera in your new Google Nest "home/structure" while connected to your new Wi-Fi network.

I'm wondering why you want to use a separate Wi-Fi network to extend your coverage. Since you have 2 Wi-Fi networks, you will need two Google Nest "homes" and each will need a separate Nest Aware subscription if you want a subscription.  And you cannot get things like "Visitor announcements" between two different "homes".

Our coverage in our home is extended by using two Linksys routers that are connected by Ethernet cable to our ISP's router/modem, and are configured in bridge mode so we have one network name (SSID) and one Wi-Fi network for our entire home.

This is extremely helpful! I would be ok having the same network for both routers but I am not sure how to do that. Any advice?

@Ralph1

It's pretty hard to advise you, because it depends on your routers and the details of your network. In our situation, our ISP's router/modem continues to serve as the DHCP server, and our two Linksys routers are connected via Ethernet cable to ports on our ISP's router/modem, and are configured as access points, using the same SSID as our ISP's router/modem, and are not performing router functions or functioning as DHCP servers.

You need some familiarity with those concepts to set it up.

We had this exact same issue and had to get "pods" that plug in to outlets to extend to the camera that's in the front of the house. We have about 4 pods in the house. The wifi extender I was using wasn't solving the issue. These pods are from our service provider (Rogers)

Turns out my second router was already setup as an access point, I just had a different network name. I changed it to be the same credentials as my main router. I had to factory reset the camera a few times but now everything is working. Thanks for the help!
