Nest Cam (outdoor, battery) – Bring back AC-power/wired only option

I write this with the hope that a Google Nest product person will be paying attention (and listen) to this feedback.

I bought our first outdoor security cameras in October 2016. The two cameras were the original Nest Cam Outdoor 1st generation (wired power).

I recently found a copy of my original installation guide (https://nest.com/support/images/camera-sept-2016/document/Nest-Cam-Outdoor-Install-Guide-en-us.pdf) which states:

To avoid risk of overheating and burns: Use only in temperatures between –4° and 104°F (–20° to 40°C).

Where I live in central Canada, we spend an average combined time of months below –20°C (–4°F), going down as far as –45°C (–49°F) for 1-2 weeks straight – sometimes for longer, and even colder.

The 2016 Nest Cam Outdoor have worked flawlessly through eight winters now – they have always recorded video and audio.

Last year, I finally decided to add more outdoor cameras around the house. All I could find at the time were the new Nest Cam (battery outdoor). I bought two, along with a “Nest Cam (battery) Weatherproof Cable” for each.

Then came winter and I was completely flabbergasted/blown away (and not in a good way) to open the Google Home app to find no live video feed, but instead the message:

“Device offline because of extreme temperature”

What?! Just disappointing. –25°C, for example, is not “extreme” where I live.

What needs to happen for me to consider staying with Google Nest when it comes time to replace/add cameras:

  1. A wired power only version (I do not need or want a battery).

  2. The camera needs to work in colder temperatures/be on-par with my original Nest Cam Outdoor cameras from nearly a decade ago.

I agree and this is a very valid point. I live in Québec city also in Canada and would not want to replace my current 1st generation wired cameras with battery operated ones, even with the added cable. I'm worried that when I need to replace my current wired cameras, that is the only solution available from Google. I hope that Google listen to your suggestion.

You sould redirect your suggestion to the comments section for Google to read, as this forum is not for this purpose.

Hi @gilleslibre and thanks for chiming in.

When I come to the "Google Nest Community" at googlenestcommunity.com (registered to organization "Google LLC"), post in the Cameras and Doorbells product forum with the Labels "Choose a Product → Nest Cam Outdoor" and "Choose an Issue Category → Feedback", that seemed like a pretty Googly place to give Google my feedback about a Google Nest Cam Outdoor.

That being said, I am genuinely curious as to what you are referring to when you say "the comments section"?

I'll try to find it and come back with the information as I'm in a hurry at the moment. If I am not mistaken, you can either send comments from the app on your cell phone, or from the Web based viewer.

Ahhh, yes... from the (Google) Home app, as of this reply, one can

  1. select their avatar from the top-right corner of the app
  2. select Feedback → Camera and doorbell

I have already done that, however, I posted as feedback in this forum too, for additional visibility.

I definitely agree that Google Nest ought to offer a wired outdoor camera. We bought a battery camera with the optional power cable in Sept. 2021 only because Google Nest discontinued the Google Nest Outdoor Camera (wired) that month.

Our plugged-in battery camera has gone through 3 Minnesota winters without going offline, with temperatures as low as -20 Fahrenheit (-28.9 Celsius)--though certainly NOT this winter. We have our camera under a camera shade, which seems to help shield it from extreme temperatures.
