Nest Cam with Floodlight / Nest Cam (Battery) audio

I have 2 Nest Cam (Battery) and a Nest Can with Floodlight. All of witch are hardwired. Starting like 3 months ago I noticed that I could barely hear the audio from these cameras. I also have a Nest Hub Max and a Nest Hello. These I could hear the audio perfectly fine, in both the Nest and Home apps.

I realized that the newer cameras that are managed in the Home app, was only playing audio (live or recorded)  with the earpiece of my phone. I also noticed that when I try to turn up my phones audio it tells me it's a call.

I am using an S21 Ultra running Android 12, One UI 4.1. I also tried viewing the cameras on an S9+. It still said that it was a call but it was playing the audio from the main speaker.

At this point I DM'ed Google on Twitter and after doing some troubleshooting they passed my problum on to investigators. After looking at what I sent, they told me that the app was working the way it was designed and if I did not like it I could submit feedback. I don't think that they understood what I told them because there is no way that it's normal for me to have to put my phone up to my ear like a call to hear audio from the new cameras. With my phone at full volume.

I think it has to do with how the audio is formatted as a call and how that interacts with Android 12. Is anyone else experiencing this problum?

@UTAAmtrak

Perhaps it is an issue with the interface on Android phones. We have a Google Nest Camera (Battery), and in the Google Home app it plays sound on the earpiece and the speakers at the bottom of my iPhone XR (as do our older Google Nest cameras and doorbells in the Google Nest app).

So, what should I do?

@UTAAmtrak

You could try contacting Google Nest Support; you have to start the process here:

https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp?hl=en

You can also send "feedback" in the Google Home app by going to Settings and clicking on "More" (the ellipsis--the three dots--in the upper right corner) and then clicking "Feedback".  I don't know whether you'll get a response or not.

You could also wait to see whether other customers with Android phones chime in on this post with the same problem.

Same issue for me with a Samsung Galaxy s22 ultra. Nest cam audio can't be changed to speaker... Still waiting on a fix.

I have been in contact with Google Nest support for a while. They where working on a fix. They sent it out. If kinda helped but did not fix it. They stoped responding after that.

I have found that if you turn Bluetooth off and then on it will be fixed until you take a call useing a Bluetooth device.

Hi folks,

UTAAmtrak, thank you for following up and for your efforts to fix this issue.

vperricelli, I'm sorry that you have to experience this using your Samsung phone. We'll figure this out. What type of camera do you have trouble with? When did the issue start? Also, what troubleshooting have you tried so far?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

JT

I have the best cam with spotlight outdoor camera. I have tried changing settings in my phone to get the audio to play thru the speaker. I have also tried the nest and home app.

Hi vperricelli,

Got it, thanks for following up. Going over the steps here might help:

Go to your phone settings > Notifications > Google Home app > Customize notifications.

Ensure the app you want to have a sound has alerts enabled.

Best,

JT

Notifications are not the issue... but I did go and check and these settings are correct. It's talking/listening to the person at my door. I have to hold the phone to my ear to be able to hear the person at my door.

Hi vperricelli

Got it, thanks for clarifying that. Let's get this sorted. Have you tried adjusting the volume of your phone? Have you tried checking the audio of your camera on another phone? If so, how did it go? Also, have you tried restarting your phone?

Can you try the steps in this guide: Troubleshoot camera audio.

Let me know if that helps.

Best,

JT

Yes, I have adjusted the volume on my phone. Tried the talk/listen on my wife's phone as well. Only way I can hear the person on camera is to put the phone to my ear. It's not letting me route the audio thru speaker phone.

On my phone whether Bluetooth is on or off, it routes it as a call and doesn't give the option to route thru speaker
