Nest Doorbell Wired - DOES NOT WORK WITH GOOGLE HOME

So I got my doorbell - paid someone to have it installed (faster than my working through it) and when I went to config in the Google Home app it redirected me to the Nest app.  It seems that ONLY the battery doorbell will work with the Google Home app.  This means the Nest app is required for the wired doorbell which means very limited, if any, functionality within Google Home and forces me to use two apps.  Stupid.  Had the google doorbell comparison communicated this then it would have saved me time and frustration.  FYI for others who happen upon this post.

It also seems that the Battery Doorbell WILL work with wired doorbell chimes should you choose to connect it and you can wire it in with then makes it a regular (non-battery doorbell as the electric connection provides constant power).

The wired Nest Doorbell was created when Nest was an independent company. The Nest Doorbell Battery was released after Google bought Nest. It's a next-gen product, so it's a little more advanced with the Animal and Vehicle detection and has a more thorough integration into Google Home. The original Nest devices are interfaced to Google Home just like any other third party app.

Your statement "It seems that ONLY the battery doorbell will work with the Google Home app." is absolutely wrong.

I can do literally every routine activity with the wired doorbell through Google Home or the Nest App:

  • View Live Video
  • View History / Clips
  • Respond via the microphone or Quick responses
  • Turn the camera on/off
  • Add Familiar Faces
  • Change Device settings

The only obvious thing that I can't find through Google Home is how to create an Activity Zone. I can't imagine that the iOS Google Home is that much different than the Android version. For day to day usage, there's virtually no difference between the two apps.

Have you tried clicking on "Cameras" in Google Home?

Well I wished I had talked to you instead of Nest tech support. They told me that I need the nest app to config and control and the Google home app would largely be useless for doorbell purposes.

seems I’m in the same boat with the learning thermostat. Back to the nest app as I try to config that.

google should Make it clear which products require which apps and what features, if any, can be controlled via other apps.

Keep in mind that they are still in a transition phase.  I use both google home and nest apps on my phone...depending on what I want to do.  They will iron it out!

Oh, trust me, they've had some serious growing pains. When they transitioned from whatever the previous service to "Nest Aware", I went round and round with them when my entire Google Home profile was deleted (with no refund) when trying to transition from Nest to Google Home.  Google refused to admit any responsibility whatsoever for everything just magically disappearing and it took way too much effort between Nest and Google to get them to refund my yearly subscription. (If I charged them for my time, they'd owe me service for quite awhile.)

Google reps actually blamed me for deleting the Google Home profile at their instruction because of the link between it and TiVo Stream 4K and an app on it that had full access to my Google account.

I'm still on the monthly plan because it was completely beyond their ability to get back to the yearly plan. (It's better than paying $6/month/device, but still, Google should be able to fix their own crap.)

Well, now I'm getting pissed about that again. 🙂

Google can build Quantum Computers, but can't keep this crap from happening.

It's ridiculous.

Hi there,

Sorry for my late response. Thank you for all of your patience while waiting for a reply. I just wanted to make sure that your issue is addressed. I am terribly sorry to hear that you have had such a hard time with this! I would love to look into this issue further and help find a solution for you. First off, I have some questions I’d like to ask you.

  • Do you still need help with this issue?

  • What troubleshooting steps have you done thus far?

  • Have you tried to restart your device if you haven’t already?

  • If the restart didn’t work, have you tried to do a Factory Reset? This would be a last resort option, but would clear out issues and the device would essentially be ‘brand new’

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Best Regards,

Brad.

Hey folks,
It looks like we haven't heard back from the OP so I'm going to go ahead and lock the thread. If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to create a new thread.

Have a great day,
Garrett DS

Hi  Scotthuguenin2,   As you can read on the many various posting there are many people that are upset (including me) about how this has all come down.

#1 The fact that NEST is in the product name for these new cams but it doesn't work with the NEST app is very confusing.  If this is such an different environment then they should have been called GOOGLE CAMs

#2 For all my legacy apps if I'm view the live feed in the GOOGLE HOME app but I want to look at recorded footage then guess what, it takes me out of GOOGLE HOME and brings me back to what... you guessed it. The NEST app.

#3 The new doorbell when wired does NOT give you 24/7 recording.  As if that isn't bad enough, the new doorbell is very slow at waking up.  I have at least 3 clips where the clip starts with the person walking away from the camera.

#4 (this is a big one for me) You can not view any of the new cams from your computer's browser.

#5 on the GOOGLE HOME app you can not trim up the start/end of a clip that you want to save.  So if the clip is 30 seconds long and you really only need about 5 seconds there is nothing you can do.

#6 On the GOOGLE HOME app you can not simply send a LINK to someone to view a clip. You have SAVE THE CLIP to your phone's photo album and then leave the app in order to email it or send it as text message.

#7  The resolution on the new cams is really only 1K.  When just about everyone else is making cams that are 2k and 4k.

This list goes on and on but for me these are the big ones.

Thanks for reading and I remain hopeful that we see forward movement on this without waiting until 2022 for some new features.
