Nest Doorbell battery draining everyday

Toolegit2quit
Community Member

I've recently started having issues with my nest doorbell which we installed about 6 months ago. Before this week, the battery lasts weeks before needing to be recharged. For the last 5 days, I get a daily notification that the battery is down to 19%, despite it being fully charged overnight. I've adjusted the settings but it hasn't made a difference. Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, how did you resolve it?

Hello Toolegit2quit,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues with the Nest doorbell. Let’s check it out.

A few questions: what country are you located in? What is the temperature where the doorbell is installed?

At temperatures between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C), the battery can still power your device, but it won’t charge. It may also drain more quickly than usual. At temperatures close to -4°F (-20°C), your battery may have less than half the life that it has in warm weather.

Here’s a handy guide to learn more about cold-weather battery charging behavior in Nest cameras and doorbells.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Lance

Hi Lance,

I'm located in Australia. At the moment overnight temps average around 5°c, however I wasn't having issues through winter when they drop down to -8°c.

Hi Toolegit2quit,

I gotcha. Thanks for the follow-up information. To isolate the battery issue, let’s reset the doorbell to factory settings. Follow the steps below:

  1. Save any video history on the device, if any. Follow this guide.
  2. Unmount the Nest doorbell, and then locate the reset pinhole on the back of the device. Connect the device to the USB cable and charger.
  3. Insert and hold the pin (you can use an unfolded paper clip or a thumbtack).
    1. At 10 seconds, the status light will blink yellow four times, and you’ll hear a countdown tone.
    2. At 12 seconds, the status light will be steady, solid yellow while the doorbell starts the factory reset, and you’ll hear a confirmation tone.
  4. Release the button. Your device will be restored to its factory settings.
  5. After the factory reset, your device will appear as "offline" in the app until you remove it. Also, the status light should be pulsing blue. If not, repeat step 3.
  6. To remove it from the app, open the app, then tap Settings > Remove Device > Confirm.
  7. Make sure the phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the selected network for the Nest device.
  8. Bluetooth should be enabled, but it should not be connected to any Bluetooth devices. Disconnect any Bluetooth devices paired to your phone, such as earbuds, smartwatches, etc.
  9. Cellular data should be turned off.
  10. If you have an iOS device, tap Settings > Privacy > Local Network and turn on Local Network Access for the Google Home app.
  11. Start adding the device back to the Google Home app.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Lance
