Nest Doorbell (wired) 2nd Gen SDM API Support

EvanGrote
Community Member

I received and installed the new Nest Doorbell (wired) 2nd Gen last weekend and wanted to play around with it via the SDM API but I discovered it was not listed in my Device List and while "Nest Doorbell (wired)" is listed in the supported devices, it seems to refer to the 1st generation Nest Doorbell (wired).

The SDM API's support page indicated I should post on Stack Overflow for support (which I did), but that doesn't seem to be monitored very actively, so I tried chatting with a rep from the Google store who transferred me to Nest support, which indicated I should "provide feedback" in this community.

My API support desires are almost entirely trivial but the person who commented on my stack overflow post had a much more valid concern regarding the lack of accessibility for the device absent SDM API support. Is there typically a lag between device launch and SDM API support for new Nest devices?

Also wanting SDM API support for the the 2nd gen wired doorbell, I believe it took them about a month to add the battery doorbell to the API. I find it odd that they release these products without SDM API support.

That's the context I was hoping someone could provide. Thanks!

I agree that the delay in shipping SDM API support is odd. Especially in this case because I wouldn't think there's much difference in the hardware (sans battery) between the wired and the battery doorbell now, but who knows...

Hi Brad,

Instead of closing the thread without resolution, please keep it open, so that other people can find it and express interest in the feature. I am sure everyone here would also prefer getting notified in this post when the feature goes live. That would be a better customer experience.
This is a community, not a support channel, right? Then let us, customers, communicate in the community the way we prefer.
Thank you.

Instead of locking down the thread, how about leaving it open and providing actual updates. Like its in progress or we expect a release at this time? Its not a feature request its something that should have been done before release of the product. If its something that is not going to happen it would be nice to know that as well so we can look to another product that will do what we want (like the battery version)

Hi Brad,
you see.. people here are home automation enthusiasts and we know that somewhere there is a product team responsible for SDM API that clearly has a backlog and a roadmap and a few sprints to run. And then there is a ticket for a wired doorbell with some time estimation on it which tells approximately when things will get done. And priorities chance, we all get that. So you can't promise anything - that's ok. But you can try getting this info and if you don't have such abilities, then how can you and this community be helpful? All that you've suggested so far is to go and talk to the smart speakers, which is one-way communication. And we want to hear back from Google or at least collectively moan about our troubles here in the thread. If none of this is possible, what is this community for? Will it last?
This is not my first bad experience with this community, it's repeating. Not a good trend. Probably better to go to social media and tell everyone how great this product release is.
Thanks.

I have resorted to replying to @madebygoogle tweets hoping their social media manager might be more helpful than the mods here

Google get your act together. This should be 101 release management.

Is there a better forum to voice that we want this feature added asap? It doesn't feel like google triages their feedback well.

Agreed! They aren’t even pretending to give us an update but are completely willing to “close the thread” smh

Bought mine today and was surprised I couldn't integrate to HA. Why release a devices without full support? If it doesnt come out in next couple days the doorbell goes back to the store

Waiting too, I bought this with the understanding it was supported for HA. I was ready to buy the cameras as well but already concerned with the lack of support out of the door and the communication on timeline that i'll just wait.

I stumbled onto this looking to incorporate my new Nest Doorbell (wired) 2nd gen with my Home Assistant smart home setup. I would also like a response.
