Nest door bell (wired) - door bell stopped working

katandchad

Good evening, our nest door bell video works fine alone with the microphone and speaker.  We have had it form a few years.  Recently I realized the door bell is not working.  It used to ring the mechanical doorbell (I believe) and would ring and announce recognized faces on our google puck speaker.  I am unable to find any troubleshooting to correct this issue.

One common problem is that the internal battery in the Nest Hello doorbell fails after a year or two.  (Yes, it has one!)  When it fails, the doorbell goes offline for a minute whenever it is pressed. It's happened to all 3 of our Nest Hellos in succession. There is a workaround: if you turn off the "Indoor chime" option, then the doorbell no longer goes offline, but of course the doorbell chime then no longer works. But you can instead rely on "Visitor announcements" on your Nest Hubs, Nest Minis, or Nest speakers.

A few customers have pried open their doorbell and replaced the battery with a 3rd-party battery, even though it's not designed to be replaceable:
