Nest doorbell battery black

What's going on with my Nest Doorbell (battery)?! Whenever the power gets below 10% (or less than 7 days) the doorbell will intermittently record an all black image with some colour highlights around objects. It doesn't do it all the time, but it does it enough to be irritating and causes what would be useful footage to be missed. It happens in all sorts of lighting and weather conditions. It isn't a streaming issue either as the black footage is recorded to the cloud. Is it faulty?!

Hi @supereddzz!

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Doorbell (battery) is intermittently recording black images with color highlights around objects when the battery is low. I appreciate your efforts in taking those steps before. I'm happy to help you!

To help me find the best solution, I'll need to ask you a few questions:

  • Does the issue happen when viewing live view?
  • When charging, does the device indicate that it is charging normally?
  • Could you provide some screenshots of the image quality issues your Nest Doorbell (battery) is experiencing?
  • Did you notice or experience any power outages recently?

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Geremi

Hi Geremi,

To answer your questions:

Yes, the issue does occur in Live View as well as within recorded clips.

The device charges normally

I have provided images in my reply below

We have had no power outages recently and I don't see how this would affect a battery powered device?

Thanks.

Hi @supereddzz!

Thank you for your response.

Based on the screenshots and information you provide, one factor that can contribute to issues with the image quality is a very low battery level. It's possible that when the battery is critically low, the doorbell might try to conserve power, which could potentially affect video performance.

Here's an article with some helpful tips on your Nest doorbell's battery: Save battery for Nest cameras and doorbells.

If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,
Geremi

So is this a bug with the power saving mode or a hardware problem with the doorbell itself? Should I return the doorbell for a replacement?

I hope these images show the problem. You can see the coloured highlights around a vehicle in my driveway.
