Nest doorbell gaps in recording

Snowstar
Community Member

I have just discovered (after a neighbour got burgled!) that my doorbell recordings have lots of gaps where no video is recorded. It is only recording about half the time.  It is not much good as a security device if it only records half the time. I have checked and Home/Away is switched off. The internet connection is good and the wired power is reliable. Can anyone help as to why it is doing this?

Hi everyone,

@Snowstar and @thisisargo, thanks for reaching out here in the Community. The Google Nest attempts to send you the right number of alerts at the right times, your Nest Doorbell will trigger a short cooldown period each time a notification is sent. While the duration of the cooldown period varies by alert type (e.g. person, sound, motion, etc.) the behavior remains the same. To confirm, how far is your Nest Doorbell from your Wifi router? Do you have a Nest Aware subscription? Do you have a scheduled setup? Looking forward to your response.

Regards,
Emerson

Hi  everyone,

Thanks for posting in our Community. I'm sorry for the delay and to hear you're having trouble with this. Let’s check it out. A few questions: what type of Nest doorbell do you have? Are you using an iOS or Android device? Do you use Google Home or the Nest app? For Nest devices in the Nest app, are there also gaps in the video history on https://goo.gle/2qjvVSU?

@thisisargo,thanks for the follow-up information. If your Nest camera was set up in the Nest app, it may have a set schedule. To turn it off if needed, follow the steps below:

  1. With the Nest app, select your camera.
  2. Tap Settings > Schedule.
  3. Turn Schedule on or off.

More information here: Program a camera schedule with the Nest app.

I appreciate your help, Emerson and Jenelyn.

Best,

Lance

  1. Motion settings: Check the motion detection settings on your doorbell. It's possible that the sensitivity is set too low, causing it to miss certain events. Adjust the motion detection sensitivity and test if it improves the recording frequency.

  2. Wi-Fi signal strength: Although you mentioned that your internet connection is good, it's worth verifying the signal strength specifically near your doorbell. Weak Wi-Fi signal can result in intermittent connectivity and recording issues. Consider moving your router closer to the doorbell or using a Wi-Fi extender to enhance the signal.

  3. Power source: Even if the wired power supply seems reliable, double-check the voltage and ensure it meets the requirements of your doorbell. A fluctuating or insufficient power supply can cause irregular recording behavior. You might want to consult the doorbell's manual or contact the manufacturer for specific power-related troubleshooting steps.

  4. Firmware and app updates: Make sure your doorbell's firmware and the associated app are up to date. Manufacturers often release updates to address bugs and improve functionality. Check for any available updates and install them if necessary.

  5. Storage capacity: If your doorbell relies on local storage, such as an SD card, verify that it has sufficient space to store recordings. If the storage is full, it may stop recording until older files are deleted or the storage is expanded.

  6. Contact customer support: If none of the above suggestions resolve the issue, consider reaching out to the customer support of your doorbell's manufacturer. They should be able to provide further assistance and troubleshooting specific to your device.

Remember to prioritize your safety and consider alternative security measures if you feel that the doorbell is not fulfilling its intended purpose.
