Nest doorbell notifications

nh603
Community Member

Doorbell notifications not working as expected, specifically no notification when doorbell rung. I receive all camera notifications (and all are turned on), but when someone rings the doorbell there is no notification or any record of the button push/ring in Home app activity.

@Lance_L - You had responded to my original thread, but it closed before I responded.

Hi, I’m having this same issue. Did you figure it out or receive any guidance? I am struggling with this.

Hi everyone,

We understand your concern about your device not working as it should, and we appreciate your reports here in the Community.

I'd love to dig deeper into this issue. What type of Nest doorbell do you have? Do you have an iOS or Android device? Are you using the Google Home or Nest app? Also, did the notifications work before?

Let's try these troubleshooting steps below (try to trigger a notification to test after each step):

  • Connect the mobile device to another Wi-Fi or cellular network.
  • Sign in to your account on another mobile device.
  • Connect the Nest doorbell to a different network.

@nh603, we understand how you feel. We apologize if that thread has been closed sooner than you would have liked. As Community Specialists, we occasionally do a bit of housekeeping to keep the conversations in our community fresh and relevant. This includes locking threads after a period of inactivity.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Lance

Very similar experience. The only time it will work is when I reset the doorbell and it will only do so for about 5 mins max. Then it will revert to not registering the doorbell being pressed. Pushing the button will produce a sound directly from the google nest doorbell though, but not registered on the app. Only started to happen recently. Did something change?

@Lance_L I did some testing and found a related thread with a solution. What I did was turned off all other notifications (People, Packages, Animals, Vehicles, Motion). Once I did that the doorbell notifications started working as expected (i.e. someone rings the doorbell/pushes the button I get a notification).

Let me know if I should still reset the device. And/or what next steps are to report a bug as it seems others have had the same problem and solution (doorbell notifications only work if all others are turned off).

Thanks!

Hello nh603,

Thanks for getting back to me. The doorbell notification settings should be independent of other event notifications (e.g., People, Packages, Animals, etc.). Before resetting the Nest doorbell, let’s try to check first if the Google Home or the Nest app have any available updates.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Check for any updates for the Google Home/Nest app in the Apple App Store or the Play Store.
  2. Check for any iOS or Android updates.
  3. Uninstall the Google Home or Nest app, restart your phone, and then reinstall the app.

If the issue persists, go ahead and reset the Nest doorbell. Check the instructions below:

  1. Save any video history on the device, if any. Follow this guide.
  2. Unmount the device and then connect it to the USB cable and power adapter.
  3. Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the camera.
  4. Insert and hold the pin (you can use an unfolded paper clip or a thumbtack).
    1. At 10 seconds, the status light will blink yellow four times, and you’ll hear a countdown tone.
    2. At 12 seconds, the status light will be steady, solid yellow while the camera starts the factory reset, and you’ll hear a confirmation tone.
  5. Release the button. Your device will return to its factory settings.
  6. After the factory reset, your device will appear as "Offline" in the app until you remove it.
  7. To remove it from the app, open the app, then tap Settings > Remove device>  Confirm.
  8. Make sure the phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the selected network for the Nest device.
  9. Bluetooth should be enabled, but it should not be connected to any Bluetooth devices. Disconnect any Bluetooth devices paired to your phone, such as earbuds, smartwatches, etc.
  10. Cellular data should be turned off.
  11. If you have an iOS device, tap Settings > Privacy > Local Network and turn on Local Network Access for the Google Home app.
  12. Start adding the device back to the Google Home or Nest app.

Keep me posted.

@Lequanp, @Jhp21668, and @Zhocotino, I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Best,

Lance
