Nest outdoor camera - general unreliability

wood
Community Member

Where should I start ?

1)  Home/Away Assist doesn't work.  Nest app on phone shows Away status.  Yet camera is not on.  It should be.  Have reinstalled the Nest app.  No change

2)  Sometimes the camera tells me it is offline and yet I can Ping it from my Mac.  So it isn't offline.

3) Events not being recorded.  Great jumps in the recorded video timeline.

Basically Not Fit For Purpose

For the home and away assist make sure you disable it if you use the Google Home app. Meaning just use it on the nest app.  You didn’t say if you have and IPhone or a robot phone. You need to make sure the phone is set to allow always under your phone settings not just in the nest app

Just bought Nest outdoor camera and am worried its a complete waste of money :-

- I can live stream anytime

- notifications are on in both home and nest

- camera light is green

- I can see some nest aware events eg 2 from this morning, but nothing since then

- missing events include

- mobile hairdresser visiting our house. I could see the car at the end of our drive on the live view, but no entry or exit events of her walking up the drive to our door etc.

- me going outside and seeing myself waving at the camera on the live view

- my wife and son leaving the house and the car leaving the drive

Currently very dissapointed

I think that their servers get overloaded.  That is where all the 'clever' stuff is done.

I just noticed an 'event'...person.   Camera should not be on.  I am sitting in my study.  At home.  My Nest app thinks that I am away.

I am seriously thinking about dumping the Nest camera on eBay and buying an Arlo.

And again.  This morning I walked past the camera at 04.25.  It is there as an event.  Did I get a notification ?  No.   Then I can see that the camera went offline at 4.35 for about 20 minutes.  Did I get a notification ?  No.

Totally useless.

And I'm still waiting for the promised callback from Nest support Level 2 after a week.

Sorry Brad.  I thought that I'd replied.  Yes, still playing up.  I've been home all day.  Went into the garden for a bit an two hours ago..stayed close to the house.   Nest decided I was away.  Camera turned on.   I'm now sitting in my study.  Been here for  an hour.  Still Away as far as Nest is concerned.

It's Nest's poor system design and overloaded servers.

just a thought as this also Happened to me.

if you are using the nest app and the google home app.  Turn of presence in the home app. This solved my issues.  It’s two different apps and they argue. Yes Google and their infinite wisdom of stupidity with dual apps.

let us know

please double check your location settings in the phone itself. Nest needs to be set to always allow.  And the same within the nest app settings.  Two different places to check and confirm

Thank you for the suggestions.

I do not have the Home app.

Nest is set to always allow.   Always has been.

Where in the Nest app do you find anything to do with Location ?

When you first open the Nest app, upper right gear.  Look for home and away assist make sure your phone is active

Thanks. I thought that was what you were referring to.  Yes...all set correctly.

And lookie-lookie....what do I see.  A person walking.  Nest status Away.  Did I get an alert ?  No.   This has happened before.  Did I mention that Nest s/w is about as flakey as it can get ?person walking.png

Mine too is also aimed at my driveway and I have none of the issues you mentioned.  So that being said is there a slight chance you have another nest camera to test.  There is the possibly it is the camera. And the software you deemed flaky is responding to what might be your camera having issues. Maybe reset the camera and start over?

No I don't have another Nest camera.  When you say Reset...do you really mean Remove it then start over ?

Hey y'all.

I am sorry to hear that the notifications aren't working for you all the time. This is not a perfect system, and it uses machine-learning. All I can suggest is that you leave your feedback in the app and restart and do your own troubleshooting using our help articles.

Best regards,

Brad.

Yes, google reset nest camera.  Not just remove it but find the pinhole reset button on the camera.  Clear it’s settings then add it back to your home.  I’m thinking try that first to isolate the issues
