why does my Nest outdoor camera only records still photo, no video

If you have a Google Nest Outdoor Camera that was installed in the Google Nest app and you do NOT have a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription for that camera or a 2nd gen Nest Aware or Nest Aware Plus subscription for the same Google Nest "home/structure" that includes your camera, then you only get photo snapshots for the most recent 3 hours:

I have 1st gen hard wired cameras and was grandfathered into Nest Aware. these cameras have worked fine until the last week or so.

I don't know what you mean by "grandfathered into Nest Aware". We've been Google Nest customers since 2019, had a 30-day free Nest Aware trial subscription initially, then 1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions, and then moved to a 2nd gen Nest Aware Plus subscription in 2020, which covers all of our cameras, including 1st gen wired cameras and doorbells as well as 2nd gen cameras. The paid subscriptions are payable monthly or annually.
Are you sure your Nest Aware subscription hasn't expired recently? You can check the status of your Nest Aware subscription here:

You can also check your subscription in the Google Nest app under Settings | Nest Aware.
