New Nest IQ Indoor camera - Can't export clips?

Hello!

I've had the older nest cams forever...just upgraded to the newer IQ indoor cameras. I'm confused on how to view the history and export clips. I see in the settings there's a "maximum recording length". I changed it to 3 minutes, and now there's major caps when I'm trying to go back and watch things. It will record for 3 mins, and there's a few mins gap, and then it'll start recording again. Can I not purchase a nest aware subscription and be able to see everything? I set these up through the google home app initially. I tried setting them up through the nest app, but I through the QR code away. I see that you can set it up manually, but when I'm asked to verify the last 3 digits of the serial number, nothing happens and I have to exit the set up.

Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, the new Google Nest cameras and doorbells released starting in the fall of 2021 work ONLY in the Google Home app and NOT in the Google Nest app or on the home.nest.com website. (The new indoor cameras are NOT IQ cameras.) As a result, they cannot be viewed with a browser, clips cannot be manually edited, there is no way to share a link to one of your cameras, and there is no "Schedule" function. But they will work with your Nest Aware or Nest Aware Plus subscription if you have one.

Here is Google Nest's Vice President's take on this approach, from a year ago (no updates since):

Hey, thanks so much for your reply! So is it possible to create a new Nest Aware account for these new cameras? I’m really needing to have the ability to create clips longer than 3 minutes.

@mhaning

Yes, you can purchase a Nest Aware or Nest Aware Plus subscription. See the links below about Nest Aware. You can also sign up for the 30-day free Nest Aware subscription that comes with new cameras--or purchase a subscription--in the Google Home app, by going to Settings | Nest Aware.

If you have the Google Nest Camera (Battery), however, it has to be plugged in with the optional power cable in order to get 24/7 recording. When running on battery power, it can only record events that it detects.

Also, because the new cameras work ONLY in the Google Home app, you cannot manually edit clips. You can only download the events that the camera detects (though you can VIEW them if you have 24/7 recording with a Nest Aware Plus subscription).

Hello! And thanks for your help. I guess to clarify: I can use the new indoor IQ cameras for recording and exporting clips for more than 3 minutes, they just have to be plugged in to the a power source?

@mhaning

No. First, there are no new Google Nest "indoor IQ cameras". The new "Nest Cam (indoor, wired)" (https://store.google.com/product/nest_cam_indoor?hl=en-US) is wired, but is not an "IQ" camera. (The Google Nest Camera [Battery], which we have, can be plugged in with an optional power cable; it too is not an "IQ" camera.) Since the new Nest Cam (indoor, wired) is wired, if you purchase a Nest Aware Plus subscription, you will get 24/7 recording that will be saved for 10 days, along with event video history that will be saved for 60 days. But unfortunately, with the new Google Nest cameras and doorbells released starting in the fall of 2021, the maximum event length is 3 minutes. And with the new cameras, you can, unfortunately, only download events that Google Nest has detected and flagged as events. If an event lasts longer than 3 minutes, you can VIEW the entire event if you have a Nest Aware Plus subscription, but, unfortunately, you will only be able to download a clip for the 3-minute portion of the event that Google Nest has designated as an event.  And with the new cameras, there is NO ability to manually edit a clip.

Sadly, with the new cameras, there is no ability to create downloadable clips longer than 3 minutes. The only explanation I've seen for this loss of functionality is the Sept. 29, 2021 posting from Google Nest's Vice President that I mentioned in my earlier reply.  He made commitments to do something about that loss of functionality, but there have been no updates at all since then.

Some customers in this forum have reported they've used video capture software on their phone or tablet to capture video from their camera's 24/7 history.
