Wired Nest Cam goes offline every night

We use a wired nest cam as a baby monitor for our toddler room. Almost every night it goes offline. Both my wife and I get notifications that the device is offline. It is less than 10 feet from the wireless AP. This is certainly not a wireless issue.

Additionally, I have swapped between 3 different wireless mesh solutions and experienced the same behavior. We have ATT 1gb fiber at the house.

Sometimes the camera can still be viewed, sometimes it can't, sometimes it only works on one or two of the google home devices, sometimes just on a phone.

I don't see how this is anything other than an issue with this camera. We have multiple other cameras- Wyze surveillance cameras, Arlo security cameras, Nest hello, etc. Everything is always solidly online and working except this one camera.

This leaves us in a difficult situation since this is the only camera that works well with the google home screen devices so we can have it live on those devices all night.

This issue usually starts around 7PM CST every night and sometimes lasts all night.

We have rebooted the camera multiple times. This ONLY happens at night. We can have that camera on any device and it will run all day without issue.

It seems to me like these Nest products have an issue with releasing IP addresses. I have had trouble with mine as well. Every time these disconnects happen for me, I can go into my router and see that the device is still showing connected to the router. The only way to fix it is to restart my router. My old Nest products, before Google bought Nest, all work fine. Google is destroying the Nest brand with these subpar products.

I appreciate this input. I actually decided to stick a smart outlet on the camera and have it turn off from around 10AM to 5PMish every day. This way it forces the camera to re-register. So far I have not had the issue again, and this was happening virtually every night before this.
It is a little silly to have to do this, but if it actually makes the camera usable, then I guess it is good enough for now. The issue for us is that we went with all google devices, so we have the google home hubs that have screens so we can view these cameras that are in the kids room overnight. The home hubs don't work well with any other manufacturer, even though they say they work with multiple. Most of the time the feeds won't stay running on the hubs or either won't pull up at all, so this kind of forces us to use the nest cams.

Hi folks!

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Camera goes offline every night. I appreciate your efforts in taking those steps before. I'm happy to help you!

To help me find the best solution, I'll need to ask you a few questions:

  • What model of Nest camera do you have?
  • Are you getting any error messages?
  • Are there devices or appliances (such as baby monitors, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) near the camera?
  • What Wi-Fi frequency band do you try to connect to (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)?
  • What is the make and model of your router?
  • When the camera goes offline, can you see any LED light on it? If so, what color is it?

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Geremi

Geremi,

Thanks for your response.
The model is: Model:GA01998-US
This has been an issue across every ISP and wireless solution we have used. We have gone from google mesh to AT&T mesh to now asus zenwifi be5000 mesh. I have changed DNS services and relocated APs to ensure coverage was perfect.
I work in IT for a living, so troubleshooting these type things is fairly common for me. The thing with this issue is that it is only the nest cam. In that room we have had to place other cameras since the google one is so unreliable. The Arlo cameras and Blink cameras all work without issue, as does the google home device and our wireless lights in the room.
I can't really go in to troubleshoot while this is happening since this is in the toddler room and the kid is asleep. I can tell you I can see the IR light is on when viewing the other cameras.
We just get constant notifications that the device is offline. Sometimes it will still pull up on a google home with the screen, sometimes it will pull up on one of our phones, sometimes it won't pull up anywhere. It doesn't matter if our phones are on wifi or not.

Another user suggested these cameras are unable to work properly with DHCP, which made me test something that appears to be working thus far. I put a smart outlet on the camera and have it set to turn off for 6 hours in the middle of the day every day. I can ensure it pulls new router information this way when it turns on, and this has so far stopped the offline issues.
This isn't caused by anything in the house, and nothing in the house is being done differently. The camera is within 10 feet of the mesh AP and there are at least 10 other devices on the AP that are all working without issue.
The zenwifi system broadcasts both 2.4 and 5 ghz with the same SSID, so devices can connect to their preferred frequency. I have devices on both.
There is no other device within 5 feet of the camera, as it is mounted on the wall above the bed.
Thank you,

Marco
