Wireless cam only sends notifications while charging

We received a battery operated nest cam as a gift. We set it up and began to charge it using its charging cable. While charging it would send notifications of people and animals to my phone. After it had completed charging I removed the cable. I noticed that during the day I received no notifications whatsoever. After several days of this i went to check the camera. It seemed to be working fine, I was really confused. I put it back up in the corner of the window and connected the charging cable to it. As I walked away my phone got a notification from the cam that someone had just walked by my home. When it’s charging notifications pop up, but when it’s not charging it goes silent. Is this normal for these cameras?

@Goopy

We've had a Google Nest Camera (Battery) for almost 17 months, plugged in with the optional 10-meter power cable. It detects events and sends notifications as well as our older wired Google Nest cameras. However, if we unplug it and then test it by walking in front of the camera, it does not detect that event. When running on battery power, the camera is in "Idle" mode and apparently doesn't always wake up to detect events.

If our camera were not plugged in all the time, we would be very unhappy with it.

So is google selling a defective product knowingly?

@Goopy

You can judge for yourself. I would not want a Google Nest battery camera running on battery power.

Hi folks,

I’m sorry for the trouble here. Let’s sort this out — what’s the make and model of your phone? Is your phone Airplane or Do Not Disturb mode turned off or on? Also, could you check if the Away-only notifications is on?

I appreciate your help, MplsCustomer.

Thanks,

JT

I have an iPhone 7 Plus with OS 15.7.2 running. Neither airplane mode or dnd are on. Away-only notifications are off as well. I have tried every work around except resetting the camera and reinstalling google home. I also have an iPad Air 2 and the nest cam acts the same regardless of whether I use the phone or tablet. Thank you for the help it’s kind of you.

Hey Goopy,

You’re welcome! Thanks for the information. Let’s see what’s going on — could you factory reset your camera and let me know how it goes?

Best,

JT

I followed the instructions on how to factory reset the camera, then reinstalled it using the google home app making sure that notifications were turned on and that all my previous setting were in place. I left the camera alone for the day. I also rebooted my phone and tablet again to make sure they were not the issue. The same issue happened, the camera gave me no notifications of events and only began giving me notifications while I was watching live video.

Hey there,

I’m sorry you’re still having trouble with your camera picking up notifications. Let’s dig deeper into this — could you turn off all your camera notifications, turn on only person notification then let us know how it goes?

Thanks,

JT

Hello.

I did as you asked and turned off all notifications but persons and waited several days, nothing changed. The camera didn’t send notifications of any person walking by regardless of how near or far they were from the camera. It also only recorded individuals passing by while I was looking through the cameras live feed. It only works as described in it’s advertising when it’s plugged into a power source.
