1st gen Chromecast not connecting after factory reset

Roger6

hello

I factory reset my 1st gen Chromecast after it started to become buggy and laggy. Sadly, now when I try to set it up again I get the message that the Google home app "Chromecast found. It needs to be activated before setup" and directs me to a help page telling me to download the home app.

I have tried switching the WiFi network to the Chromecast's temporary WiFi hot spot, but get the same message.

My router doesn't have any kind of guest mode activated, as has been suggested, and I have split my WiFi into 2.4 and 5GHz but have not had any luck after this either.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would love to get it working again.

Hi Roger6,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble setting up your Chromecast. Have you downloaded the Device Utility app? If you haven't yet, please download it in the Google Play Store or App Store.

If you already downloaded the app, please check the steps below and let me know how it goes:

  1. Open the Device Utility app.
  2. Allow Location access.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth. This step is required to activate new devices.
  4. Disconnect from the Wi-Fi network. This step helps the devices that you want to set up and connect to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth.
  5. Wait for the app to look for devices to activate.
  6. Activate the device. If there’s only one device, tap Start at the bottom right, and if the device found is wrong, tap Activate a different device.
  7. Follow the rest of the steps prompted in the Device Utility app (almost the same as the setup steps in the Google Home app). Once the device is activated, the setup continues in the Google Home app to finish the steps.

Regards,

Jennifer

Hello JenniferV

Thanks for the help.

It may be worth noting on the official help menu that you are first directed to when the Chromecast fails to connect, that the Device Utility app is not a generic term for the Google Home app but a specific app of itself.
