8-bit Option Disappeared

Hello Community,

Last night I decided to tinker with the color formatting options on my Chromecast w/GTV -- just to see if I could perceive any difference.

I have a Samsung 4K TV and the default color setting was 4:2:0 8-bit. I changed it to 4:2:0 10-bit, and clicked 'OK' to the question prompt ("changing setting ... click ok").

After a couple of minutes, I decided to switch it back to the 8-bit option ... but now it's gone. Disappeared. The only other option presently available is to increase it to 12-bit.

I'm wondering (i) if I should factory reset my Chromecast to get the 8-bit option again? or (ii) is this intentional i.e., the latest update removed the 8-bit option from the HDR format, and my action just kicked it into gear? Lastly, should I actually be grateful that the 8-bit option is removed because it wasn't giving me the best picture etc.?

*If I switch the dynamic range to SDR, however, I see the 8-bit option (along with five others). But as soon as I change it to HDR, which it was on originally, I see only the 10 & 12-bit option.

**I'm on the latest update

Hello technovice1,

Thanks for reaching out and for providing detailed information about your issue. Let's check this further.

Could you please try to reboot your Chromecast with Google TV and TV, then plug it into a different HDMI port on your TV? If the same issue persists, do a factory reset on your Chromecast.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Jennifer

Hey there, I wasn't sure if I would get a response to my question, so I factory reset my Chromecast last night.

After the set-up process was complete, I checked the color format settings and found the default 8-bit option was back in place. I'm going to leave it alone for now.

I'm still curious to know whether this is a bug i.e., that once you switch formats, you cannot go back, or if this is due to, say, future proofing HDR content, etc.  Thanks

Hey there,

Thanks for the swift reply and for keeping me in the loop. It could be a minor hiccup. I'd suggest you observe the behavior of the device and let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Jennifer

It's me again. How's it going with your Chromecast with Google TV? Still need help?

Hi Jennifer, thanks for the follow-up. I remain with my default settings turned on, with no plans to change the format anytime soon. Everything is as it was before the switch -- which is to say, good. I'm excited for the new Android 12 update, which will hopefully bring a fix for this issue.
