Audio but no video casting local files

Hi everyone. Why doesn't the image of my local files get cast? I would appreciate any suggestions or advice.

I have a home video MP4, for example, that I would like to cast to my tv using Chromecast. But I can't, despite weeks of effort. No picture, just sound.

Here are the things I have tried:

  • Using different devices, all on the same network (Windows 10 desktop, S20, Asus tablet...)
  • Different files with different extensions (mp4, avi, mkv)
  • Different apps, though I prefer using VLC
  • Adjusting casting settings in the apps (eg, turn off hardware acceleration, audio passthrough)
  • Allow an app through the firewall (VLC, etc.) in my Windows network settings
  • Make sure my Network is set to private not public

I started using a Chromecast gen2. I tried to factory reset it but I couldn't even get that to work. So, today, I went to the shop and bought a new Chromecast gen3. That doesn't work either.

Two curious things:

  • My Chromecast can cast streaming services like YouTube without any problem.
  • I was able to cast local files without any difficulty from any device to my European gen2 Chromecast only weeks ago. I've just moved from Europe to North America: I left that stuff there and bought new devices here. There, CC worked perfectly. Here, it doesn't.
