Audio issues with GCCWTV4K

Tex260Z

Ok, very annoying to have to be chasing issues with this brand new product. However, the audio output from my new GCCWTV4K is all over the place (or no existent) depending on the App being used.

I did not expect to have to become an audio expert in order to run this **bleep** thing.

I have the audio setting in the GCCWTV4K set to "Auto detect" I believe it is.

The issues is half the time it selects 5.1 surround, and we get no audio, we have to manually switch it to plain audio to get sound, amazingly this can happen in the same App i.e. YouTube, when viewing different videos which is bloody ridiculous!

System: I have the GCCWTV4K plugged in to my Yamaha RX-V3800 which is a 7.1 surround system.

The specs on the RX-V3800 are the following:

High Sound Quality
7-channel surround sound (140W x 7)
HD audio format signals capability: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio
Pure Direct for higher fidelity sound reproduction
Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit DACs for front channels and 192 kHz/24-bit High Picture Quality
Analog video (480i or 480p) upscaling to full HD 1080p
HDMI 1.3a (4 in/1 out) specification supports with Deep Color (transmission, 120Hz and 24Hz Refresh Rates and
Analog video to HDMI digital video upconversion with TBC
Advanced Features
XM ready with XM HD Surround powered by Neural-THX Surround
Support for a digital connection to a Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD players
Surround Realism
3D CINEMA DSP for creating intensive and accurate stereoscopic sound Improved Compressed Music Enhancer with Straight Enhancer program
Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control) and Adaptive DSP Level.

I purchased the GCCWTV4K because my big screen TV runs WebOS, which is no longer supported by YouTube etc. I have always run all my audio through the RX-V3800 for all devices, and never had any issues, currently the GCCWTV4K is running on the BD/HD DVD port.

I also have an Apple TV, DVD, Humax PVR, connected to the RX-V3800, no issues with any of that equipment.

I understand from some forums that there appears to be some serious issues with the GCCWTV4K not supporting some audio formats etc. However my question is surely the **bleep** thing should switch to the suitable format for each video automatically (as it is set to do). Not wishing to become a sound engineer at 75 years of age ,can someone explain what the hell is going on please?

It looks like the current answer is to "Turn off 5.1" in the settings, but what is the point of having a 7.1 surround system if GCCWTV4K doesn't support anything??

Hi Tex260Z,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

This is not the experience that we wanted you to have, let me help you out. A few things: Which app is not working when you select 5.1 setting? What steps have you taken so far to fix the issue? You can try to switch to another HDMI port or use another TV to isolate the issue.

Looking forward to your response.

Regards,

Juni

Further to my last I can advise that there is no audio output from 9Now etc. channels when the the GCCWTV4K is set to "Automatic in the audio settings.

Change it to "Never use Surround sound" and the audio works fine.

Time you guys sorted this, it's only **bleep** codecs after all.

So that's it?? silence is the answer?

I am sick of having to do work arounds for products produced by massive Companies with huge resources who don't bother to listen to their customers, and treat them like fools!

By the way this issue also occurs with AppleTV+ App on Android systems and apparently the latest the Apple TV unit itself.

Hi there,

Thanks for the response. Does your TV have the HDMI Arc port? If so, make sure that the connection from your Yamaha RX-V3800 to your TV is running through that port. I understand that troubleshooting is quite difficult, but this is our way to further isolate the problem.

Keep me posted.

Juni

Yes my TV has ARC, but my Yamaha VX-3800 AVR does not.

Consequently all my audio feed from the TV (to for instance my Humax) is managed by an optical input (from the TV to AVR) in addition the the HDMI cable.

However, none of that has anything to do with the issue as described! My GCCTV4K is NOT plugged into my TV, as I have stated clearly several times. the GCCTV4K is plugged into Port 1 (BD/HD DVD) of my AVR and the HDMI output video goes to the TV (not audio)

I NEVER us the TV audio, all audio comes from my VX-3800 7.1 surround system, and like everything else the GCCTV4K is plugged into the AVR, the TV is simply a monitor most of the time. As I have stated this issue is well known even on this forum, it can't be anything other than a codec issue when some videos will pass through audio and some won't on the same App! And also as I have stated exactly the same issue is occurring with everybody using Apple TV+ App, in fact a friend just told me he has removed that App from his system because he was sick to death of having to reconfigure the audio all the time, and he (was an Apple fanboy).

So to clarify (for the last time:

The issue is NOT equipment dependant, it appears in all brands, both TV's and AVR's and sound bars.

The issue is NOT platform dependant it is occurring with GCC, GCCTV4K, Apple TV and Apple TV4K.

The issue is NOT App dependant, it occurs with varying frequency across many Apps (but NOT apparently Netflix).

The issue is NOT App dependant in that occurs within the same App but over a range of videos.

The last would indicate to me that is is a codec issue as not all (for instance YouTube videos) use the same audio format, they can be produced on various platforms with a whole range of audio formats.

There are Apps and some equipment that will handle pretty much any audio thrown at them no matter how obscure (for instance VLC), but it appears at the moment not the GCCTV4K.

I hope this clarifies the issue once and for all, and you stop asking silly basic questions, I have been doing this stuff for nearly twenty years now.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the late revert. We appreciate the diagram that you sent. We noticed something that might cause audio output conflict. Could you try to remove the optical cable and observe if this will make a difference?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Juni

This issues masquerades in various guises, but it's all the same.

Pretty sure the answer lays in here somewhere:

Hey there Tex260Z,

I'm just checking up on this thread, do you have any more questions or need any additional help?

Best regards,

I am not even going to bother "Removing the optical cable" because common sense tells me it will not make a bit of difference! The optical cable is only used for LIVE TO AIR to the Humax & AVR, once again I will say I DO NOT USE the TV speakers at all for anything.

And once again I will explain as simply as I can that this issue is apparent (if 5.1 is turned on on GCCTV4K) within a single App, form video to video. The most common example (with 5.1 turned on in GCCTV4K) is I can watch one video in the YouTube without a problem, but if I go to some other random video it won't pass through audio, if I turn 5.1 in GCCTV4K the sounds returns, the only possible explanation for this is those videos have been created  using different audio formats and hence different codecs! I can't make it any simpler than that, and as I said the same issue is present in the current version of Apple TV's (I am told).

Ok, Just to humour you I just tested it, on a rented Amazon Prime rented video.

So, firstly when I rented "Elvis the Movie" preview in 4K HD on my GCCTV4K I got a warning saying the device could not playback 4K! Oh really?? WTF?

Secondly, I turned the 5.1 surround sound back on in the GCCTV4K, settings, and pressed play, guess what? no audio.

You can see from the attached pics that my system is Dolby, DOLBY+, and DTS compatible, just no Atmos.

Turned the 5.1 Surround off again, and the audio returns once again.

There is a setting to allow you to select an audio settings for each individual video, but what sort of crap is that in this day and age, the system should just select those formats which your system is capable of, not have to muck around doing it manually.

The fact that this option is even available makes me very suspicious that this is still a work in progress!
