Can you add regular Youtube to a child's account on Google TV?

NJJ

My daughter has a supervised Youtube account that watches on other devices.

I would like to add it to her Google TV profile on chromecast.

At the moment, I only see an option for YouTube Kids but not Youtube.

Any idea what it isn't showing?

Hey there,

Thanks for writing into the forums, I'm sure this is can be confusing, but I'm happy to help. You can add a regular YouTube account to your child's account by following these steps.

With the YouTube app

  1. On your device, open the YouTube app .
  2. In the top right, select your profile picture or initial.
  3. Select Parent settings.
  4. Choose your child.
  5. Under “YouTube Settings,” tap Edit.
  6. Choose the content setting you want to change.
  7. To confirm, tap Select

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Best regards,

On the chrome cast, the profile pic is on the top left in YouTube. When I click on it, it asks me if I want to sign out of YouTube.

I do need help, yes. The instructions above don't match Chromecast.

Hey there NJJ,

When it comes to the kid's profiles on Google TV, unfortunately, YouTube Kids is the only option available. This is because Google had the idea in mind that only young children would be using the kid's profiles, with kids that are 13 or older using normal YouTube. The steps Garrett provided come from this article, which sadly don't apply to Google TV. If you would like to see the regular YouTube app added as an option to the kid's profiles, I'd recommend you submit feedback via Google TV, so that Google is aware that it's something you'd use.

I'm sorry we couldn't have been more help, but if you had any more questions or concerns, I'd be happy to address them.

Best regards,

Jeran

Is there a way to add her account to the regular app?

She has a family link account but it can't be added to either the Youtube or Youtube Kids app.

She sure can! If you want to add her as a regular user, go ahead and follow these steps:

  • From the Google TV home screen, in the top right, go to the profile picture or initial and select Settings.
  • Go to Accounts & Sign In and select Add another account.
  • Sign in to the Google Account you want to add.

Now, once you do that, go ahead and launch the YouTube app, then follow these steps:

  • From the YouTube home screen, go to the profile picture in the top-left.
  • Select the option Switch Accounts.
  • Select your daughter's newly added Google Account.

That's it! She should get her normal YouTube recommendations and subscriptions! Of course, when you want to go back to the other YouTube accounts, follow the same steps.

I hope that helps you out!

It tells me it can’t sign on because the device is compatible with her account. It then sends me to family link but there is no information there.

I wonder if you need to change the settings for her on family link. Here is what the article says about children using YouTube:

  • Your child must have a Google Account managed by Family Link.
  • Some features on YouTube aren’t currently available for children under 13 years old (or the applicable age in your country) with a supervised Google Account.

Here is how to change the content level settings with the Family Link app:

  1. On your device, open the Family Link app.
  2. Select your child.
  3. Tap Manage settings and then YouTube.
  4. Under “YouTube Settings” tap Edit.
  5. Choose the content setting you want to change.
  6. To confirm, tap Select.

There is a lot more settings and ways to change the settings for YouTube and family link, go ahead and give the article I first linked a read and set the appropriate content filters.

Best regards,

Jeran

I still can't add her account. I've looked at the settings for Youtube, Family Link, Chromecast etc. and there doesn't appear to be a way to do it.

I don't understand why Google doesn't allow accounts to be added without explaining why.

That is pretty strange that you're still not able to add your daughter to your account! At this point, you may find more success by contacting Google by phone, as they may help you quicker than going back and forth of the forum.

I'm real sorry I couldn't have been more helpful here, but if you had any other questions or concerns, I'd be happy to address them.

Jeran
