We had exactly the same issue last week. Found the solution here:
https://ghoopi.com/toggle-surround-sound-chromecast/

Very happy to say it has worked for us (we had pretty much given up, no one else had the answer).

Hey there gump,

I know there have been some issues in the past trying to get the Chromecast with Google TV to output 5.1 surround sound, and I understand how much of a headache it can be trying to get everything working, I'd be happy to help you find a solution, let me just ask you some questions about your set-up:

  • What is the firmware version of your Chromecast?
  • Are you using a soundbar, or the TV's speakers?
  • Are you receiving Dolby Digital in other apps?
  • Have you attempted to change the HDMI port the Chromecast is plugged into?
  • What kind of TV are you using?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Will CCwGTv include a soundtrack with just Dolby digital input?

Hey there gump,

I'm pretty sure that the content that you are trying to stream/cast is what includes a soundtrack. For example, if you are trying to watch Netflix, the Netflix app is providing the soundtrack.

I would check out this thread on the topic, as it goes in-depth about Dolby Digital and Surround Sound with the Chromecast with Google TV.

Dolby digital was found in the settings in  Ccwgtv  but it came out in stereo only, not 5.1 surround, even I have clicked surround sound  ,it should be backward compatible with Dolby digital plus

Let see if we can figure out where the issue is, would you be able to answer the questions in the first post I made, so I can do some research for you?

I look forward to your response!

Just simply no 5.1 surround output even displayed Dolby digital (supported) in theCCwGTv , even directly plug into an amp that can support Dolby digital,is that the hardware problem of CCwGTv?

Hey there gump,

Chromecast outputs surround sound if a particular app supports it, and if the Audio/Video Receiver (AVR) or TV it's plugged into tells the Chromecast over Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) that it supports 5.1, AC3*, and AC3/EAC3* surround sound. If the TV or AVR do not support one of these settings, Chromecast will not output surround sound. Just to double-check, are you receiving surround sound in other applications, or are you not hearing surround sound in any application?

I look forward to your response!

Yes,my tv and AVR BOTH support AC3/DD,and have 5.1 surround sound output, however,in the CCwGTv,it has this choice, but with no 5.1 output actually

Heya gump,

That is strange for sure, and just to confirm, you are receiving Dolby Digital in other apps and services, just not in the Disney+ app, correct? If that is the case, there may be some kind of handshake issue between Disney+ and the Chromecast.

I look forward to your response!

Netflix is ok for 5.1 surround in my AVR, even it said it's broadcasting in DD+. So, it's a high probabilty that the CCwGTv hardware or software problem for not broadcasting DD in Disney plus app. It's a choice of DD in the setting of CCwGTv,but it's broadcasting in stereo only.

I'm glad to hear that the issue is isolated with the Disney+ app. I don't suppose you've already tried uninstalling/re-installing the Disney+ app as well? If so, there may be a deeper issue, and at this point I'd recommend you reach out to Chromecast support to see if they can help you out.

Or if you aren't concerned with immediate support, it would be beneficial to submit feedback via Google TV to let our engineering team know about this issue. While they won't respond directly back to you, it's the best way to submit bugs and feature requests.

I'm real sorry I couldn't have been more helpful, but if you had any other questions or concerns, I'd be happy to help out further.

Then what's the point of putting a tick option in dolby digital but have only stereo out? Can u guys reset it to a button of  "stereo" instead of "dolby digital"?

I've clicked into the Google TV contact, but it has directed me to here.

Hey there gump,

I am sorry about the extremely late response, been catching up on quite a few old threads. Were able to get into contact with Chromecast support? It should have an input field to enter the query, along with relevant articles, until giving you the option to get into contact with the support team, via either a phone call or online chat.

Jeran

Will CCwGTv be modified to support Dolby Digital?

Hey there gump,

Here are the video and audio formats that the Chromecast with Google TV currently support:

Video formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+

Audio formats: Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos (pass-through)

From what you have posted, it does seem like you're receiving different audio formats based on what app you are using, since the app is the one supplying you with the audio files. If the issue lies within the Disney+ app in particular, you may be able to get some information from their support to see if they are aware of any issues regarding their app.

Best regards,

Jeran
