Cannot launch iPlayer on CC with Google TV

SimonAJ

This week I setup a new Chromecast with Google TV. It appears to work fine, except for BBC iPlayer. The iPlayer App is not listed in the play store. There are some programs listed as suggestions which are on iPlayer. When I select one of these and launch with iPlayer, I get an error message saying "Your device is incompatible with this version." If I click on the message it says the iPlayer version is 0.4.7-dev.

I've raised this with iPlayer tech support too, but not had any resolution so far.

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

Simon

I'm sticking with Amazon 4k fire stick. It does everything Google should do - for a good price.

What is Chromecast as mentioned in the All4 notice as above if it's not Google (Chromecast)?

This is a confusion caused by Google's awkward product naming. All4 hasn't made an app for the Chromecast UI, i.e. Google TV, which is the on-screen interface of the "Chromecast With Google TV" (and Nvidia Shield, among others). But their Android & iOS apps still support the Chromecast protocol that lets you cast from your mobile app to a streaming device that supports the protocol like the original UI-less Chromecast, the new Google TV one, or 3rd party devices like the Amazon Firestick, Nvidia Shield, Roku, etc.

The original Chromecast has no remote control and you can't browse content on your TV. Instead, you browse content on your mobile device and then "cast" it to your TV, via the Chromecast.

The new "Chromecast with Google TV" have a remote control and a fully fledged user interface on the TV, similar to Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku etc.

There is currently no All4 app for Google TV, so you cannot browse for All4 shows with the remote control. However, All4 does still support the "old method", which the new Chromecasts still support - you can browse for a show on your phone or tablet and cast it to the new Chromecasts.

Too late. I refunded mine and bought Amazon fire stick. Everything just works on that.

Very disappointed with google for not launching into the UK market with both BBC iPlayer AND channel4. As a result I've got an Amazon firestick 4k at a Black Friday price. My whole life is stitched together with google products and amazon have now reinforced their hold over my entertainment requirements. Still need channel4, google!!

Hi Jeran. 👋

I think the situation is more complex than described. I have two HD Chromecast with Google TVs on which the BBC iPlayer works no problem.

I recently bought a 4K Chromecast with Google TV but the BBC iPlayer does not show up in the App store.

It seems that it's the 4K ones that are the problem. Do you know when this will be resolved please?

Previous comments mentioned it to be the other way round - 4K with iPlayer and HD doesn't (until recently). Both still lack Channel4.

Jeran,

I can see that app but its saying its not available in my country.

I am in the UK, bought hardware in UK from Amazon UK and my address is set to UK on my profile.

Any ideas?

Thanks Sidmouth. For me is 100% the 4K that does not have the option. I have 2 HD that I have iPlayer installed and working on.

Have you Channel4?

4K iPlayer should work. It's still on mine. Maybe a (temporary?) problem on the store??

All4 has never been available on CC with Google TV and as far as I know no timescale for it's release. Channel 4 are rebranding their app soon to just "Channel 4" I understand, with a pretty considerable change to the app. We can dream that may be released for CC with Google TV, I guess!
