I am having issues casting to any device on my home network (currently using the google wifi mesh infrastructure). Google support has been absolutely useless to help me, so I'm hoping someone on here can help me out a bit.  I am using the first-gen google wifi mesh system, and have several of the google smart speakers, and Chromecast systems. more often than not when I go to cast from any device in my network TO any avaliable casting device, the media will start to cast, then pause after just under 1 second. when I resume it, I'll pause again. this has been happening for a couple of months now and I haven't been able to isolate the issue. I can fix it temporarily by power cycling all my google wifi mesh routers. I reached out to the google cast support team, which just ended up being an endless loop of teams saying that it wasn't their problem (cast sent me to the wifi team, who sent me back to casting, who sent me back to wifi before I finally gave up). I tried to do a conference chat with the teams, but they said that's against policy and they're not allowed. Apologies for the google rant, I just don't want someone to comment telling me to contact their support. Any help/advice would be awesome. other steps I've done to troubleshoot are below. Phones are Pixel 3 xl and pixel 4a 5g.

  1. wipe and reset google home network
  2. disconnect / reconnect wifi on end devices
  3. wipe / reset google home hub/chromecast, etc devices
  4. try using a desktop browser instead of phone or laptop
  5. try using hardline connection on end device
  6. forget that wifi connection, re add to network

Hey there Will,

This is currently a thread right now where users are experience the same issues as you are reporting, only with Chromecast with Google TV. I'll go ahead and add you to the current bug that is happening, and I would keep an eye out for any updates on that issue.

I'm real sorry I can't do more for you, but if you had any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Best regards,

Let me guess - are you also streaming a Nest Cam feed on a Nest Hub elsewhere in your house? If so, I'll drop this info here, because it sounds like the same issue many of us are having.

---

There is a larger thread for this issue. If you can upvote this thread, maybe it'll get some more attention from Google.
https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/115878590/why-does-media-on-my-google-products-indefini...

The issue started in late May when Nest Hubs subscribed to the Preview Program started getting the new Fuchsia OS update (from the original Cast OS). From that point forward, streaming any Nest Cam on any Nest Hub running Fuchsia will pause all media playing on any other Google device.

As usual, Google ignored Preview Program feedback regarding the bug, and allowed it to roll out to all Nest Hubs in late August.

Unfortunately, it's not such a wild edge case. Many people use these devices as security systems or baby monitors. It happened the very first night my Nest Hubs got Fuchsia, because we play white noise in my son's bedroom at night, while watching him on the Nest Hub by our bedside.

Aside from viewing your Nest Cam on a phone or computer, there's only one other workaround that I have found: tell Google Assistant on a different device (like your phone or a smart speaker) to stream your Nest Cam on the Nest Hub of your choice. This causes the Nest Cam feed to "cast" on your Nest Hub instead of utilizing the Fuchsia OS to view the feed. Streaming your camera this way will not interrupt any other media playing in your house.

For example, when I want to watch my son in our bedroom at night, I can tell my phone "Ok Google, stream the Kids Room Camera on Master Bedroom Display."

If this is something you do frequently, you can also create a Google Assistant Routine to accomplish the task, and add a shortcut to run the Routine to your phone's home screen. By using a custom multi-step Routine, I have added a shortcut that will pull up my son's camera feed on all 5 of the Nest Hubs in our house.

Please do not close this thread. It is an open issue that Google is aware of that has not been fixed yet.

This is the issue on the other Google Support forum: https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/115878590/why-does-media-on-my-google-products-indefini...

@Jeran can you provide any updates from Google on this?

Sure thing, I'll go ahead and leave this thread up for more responses, updates, and "me-too"s. I'll check out the details with the Google team and see if I have any updates on the status of this issue. I'll keep you posted on this thread!

Me too!  We DO use our Nest for baby cam streaming so I'm going to try this but, man is it obnoxious.  I cast Story Pirates for my older kids every night and inevitably just as I'm falling asleep one of them yells that Story Pirates paused and I have to go power cycle the Nest Mini.  I also have this issue casting Peloton to my Chromecast in the morning (also typically when the Nest is streaming).

No dice. Peloton still pauses when I cast it to my Chromecast even with no Nest casting going on in the house.

Me too... Beyond annoying and must be simple to fix if google could be bothered to give it a go.

Curious if others who are experiencing this issue use Google Wifi mesh network like i do, or if you're using a different wifi router solution.  I rebooted my entire google wifi system today and it seemed to temporarily solve the issue. However, the cast pausing happens at least once every 24 hours. so TBD for now.

I'm also using Google Wifi, but I don't think it's related. I've used this combination of Google Wifi, Nest Cams, and Google Home devices for years without issue. The problem began immediately when the Fuchsia OS update automatically installed on my Nest Hubs.

I don't know if it's due to an update or if the suggestion actually worked but I've had a lot of success in the last week changing my routines to ask Assistant to start streaming Nest instead of the actual device.  This seems to allow audio streaming with Google Podcasts and Spotify without interruption.  For whatever reason my Peloton streaming to Chromecast has also begun working flawlessly again.

Casting (just about) anything *should* work.

The source of the problem is when you view a Nest Cam on a screen running the Fuchsia OS, either by (1) tapping on the screen Home Control > Cameras > My Nest Cam, or (2) by saying "OK Google, stream My Nest Cam" directly to a screen running Fuchsia.

When you do either of the two things mentioned above, you are accessing the Nest Cam via the Fuchsia OS, which causes all other media playing on your Google devices to pause indefinitely.

Following my method above turns the Nest Cam stream into a regular old "cast" which bypasses the Fuchsia interface, and should work:

This is happening to me, too. It’s infuriating. I am fully invested in Google and have a multitude of devices set up across two homes and a farm. My elderly mother was using her displays every day to monitor security cameras throughout the house. We were also using the displays to monitor children, pets and farm animals. They’ve been totally unusable since July, unless we want to sacrifice all streaming services. I’m disgusted with Google.

Hey there,
I'm so sorry to hear about the troubles you've been having and I understand that this issue is frustrating but I definitely wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Just wanted to double check to see if you were still needing help on this? If so, what troubleshooting steps have you tried? Would you mind letting me know what subscription you have as well?

Please let me know.

Best regards,
Garrett DS

@GarrettDS Thank you for stopping by. The ball is in Google's court. This is a major bug with the Fuchsia OS running on Nest Hubs. They need to update the software on those devices in order to fix this problem. Until then, there is nothing we can do here in the community. The best thing you could do would be to communicate to Google developers that this is a major issue affecting daily use of our devices and it was 100% without-a-doubt introduced as soon as Nest Hubs received the Fuchsia update.

What really kills me about this whole situation: Does anyone from Google even monitor the community forums or seek feedback from planet earth? Does anyone here have any contact with the Google engineers in the inner tabernacle of holy of holies? They put out products with game-ending bugs, horrific quality assurance… months on end of a crippled system. You have complaints across multiple threads, tech media outlets, etc. And yet it’s like the Google team is incommunicado and quarantined on another plane of existence or something.

@GarrettDS do you actually communicate with the Google development team on their Nest products? Or are we just shouting into the ether? As @Ted and @ToddL both point out, the ball is in google's court to fix this issue.  We've all spent thousands of dollars and subscribed to an ecosystem that is failing us.

Please let us know if there is a better way to escalate this issue to google engineering.

All cast media is permanently hung up on pause whenever you try to view Nest cameras on any stinking v1 hub display anywhere in the house!! This is a known MAJOR problem that has persisted for MANY MONTHS, making camera monitoring virtually impossible from the equipment that was purchased for that purpose! (Google search query: “Nest hub bug pause.”) DISGUSTING SITUATION, Google!! People depend on these devices to function for safety and security, and these people include the vulnerable, the elderly and the infirm.

They must have done something. Believe it or not, casting at long last has stopped pausing on my end when viewing the cams (after four months of a crippled system). HOWEVER, now the speakers only cast music at virtually inaudible volume until I release the camera stream, at which point the volume instantly returns to normal. So,… I guess four or five more months until they get around to fixing it the rest of the way? GUYS!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING OVER THERE WITH YOUR SPAGHETTI CODE??? CAN WE EVER GET THIS ADVANCED CONCEPT OF PLAYING MUSIC ON A SPEAKER TO WORK? DEBUG THIS #%%# ROACH MOTEL!!!

I'm getting the same behaviour.  Casting is currently working, but the speaker is quiet as if it is muted to allow assistant on another device to listen to me.

I reported this to google customer support over 3 months ago and they still have no update or eta for a fix.

ToddL

Still low volume while streaming cams on my system. Disabling the “lower while listening”feature is indeed a workaround, however… now you can’t use voice commands while music is playing without shouting over the music, which is a significant drawback. So, no matter how we slice it, Google has managed, yet again, to cripple its own previously working features in some bizarre, random fashion that’s hard to see, not universally experienced, not well-understood or acknowledged, and with no timeline for a fix in sight. It’s really just a constant, unbelievably frustrating experience — months and months of trying to use a system with nothing but arbitrary malfunctions and experience-killing bugs to contend with.

Actually I may have found out how to fix the audio.  For me I went to the nest hub settings in the home app and under "audio" there is a "lower volume when listening" switch.  I have turned this off and the audio is back to normal.

I just hope that the problem doesn't come back, as I think that I have had the casting working on odd occasions and then a day later casting pauses again.

I can confirm that it appears the issue is fixed. I did not experience the same volume issue as @ToddL. For me, everything is working as expected. I can play media on other devices while also pulling up a Nest Cam feed on a Nest Hub. I am on the Preview Program and running firmware version 1.20210119.2.1390079 and cast firmware 1.52.272481.
