Chromecast Google tv system update stuck on zero and times out

Hi,

I recently opened a new Google TV chromecast however on setup the system update is stuck on 0% and eventually times out. Chromecast reports '[insert router SSID here] cannot reach the internet'. That's not right as all my other devices are happily using the internet via the router.

Yes I have done all of the basic troubleshooting and some more advanced. I've:

  • Hard restarted tv, router and chromecast
  • Ensured wiring is correct and router is near chromecast
  • Ensured the internet is accessible from other devices using the same WLAN
  • Done inital chromecast setup both on just the tv and on an android mobile device
  • Factory reset the chromecast multiple times
  • Switched security profiles on the WLAN and even turned it off temporarily
  • Turned uPnP on/off
  • Put the chromecast in a DMZ
  • Removed and readded a Google Home via android phone
  • Attempted to push an update and restart instruction via CURL

I'm all out of ideas. Hardware seems ok. I can't ask the update to be done later so the chromecast is bricked and limits my options. Only next step I can think of is flashing the firmware. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
James

Let's try to establish if the device is at fault or not.

Hard reset the Chromecast device, then run the setup procedure again, only when it asks to connect to the internet, use a WiFi hotspot.

Create a WiFi hotspot on another phone and connect your own phone to that WiFi hotspot. Lastly, when the Chromecast ask for WiFi connection, connect it to the same WiFi hotspot.

Alternatively, if you have an USB-C powered hub with ethernet port, connect the Chromecast device to the powered USB-C hub, which will provide a wireless LAN connection.

Is your Chromecast device actually connected to the internet?

If your WiFi router is dual band, set-up distinct names for each bandwidth.

Well I don't really know if the Chromecast can contact the internet. Its been assigned an IP via DHCP on the router and the router is definitely able to access the internet. Without a useable interface on the Chromecast I don't really know how to test.

Router is dual band (2.4 and 5.0GHz) but I've been mainly using 2.4 as this is where all the other devices live. I did try it on the 5 band where nothing else is and I get the same result.

You have an interface on Chromecast with Google TV, because it runs its own operating system.

Is your main screen populated with content?

If, for example, you open YouTube and try to play some content, does it work?

No I can't do anything with it. Its never worked. Out of the box I first pair the remote, pick a language, and then connect to a WiFi network. From there it proceeds directly to downloading a system update which is stuck on 0% and eventually times out and fails. There's no opportunity to skip the update. So as you can see I don't have an interface to use unfortunately.

I can confirm using a WIFI hotspot works.
it worked for me

Hmm. I hadn't considered a wifi hotspot. Thanks for the idea. I'll try that first.

Hooray! It seems that the system update is now very slowly progressing on the WiFi hotspot. Great idea. There must just be something about my home router setup that the Chromecast didn't like. Hopefully this update might fix whatever caused the issue in the first place. I'll let you know the result.

All works. The update slowly progressed and eventually was able to successfully do its install. Got to the home screen and put the chromecast onto the home router network. Works fine. Maybe the update fixed whatever comms issue it had. Thanks @djtetei for your help!

Don't forget to check for available updates for your WiFi router, also.
