Chromecast Netflix not responding to Google Home phone remote

Jetous
Community Member

Yesterday I noticed that I cannot use my GoogleHome app remote control on my phones anymore to control Chromecast Neflix.

All other streaming apps work fine except Netflix. I tried on all my Chromecast devices in my house and all phones on my group and none work. I even uninstalled Netflix and reinstalled.

since the original remotes for Chromecast are consuming so much batteries that we use the mobe phoneapp to control the chromecasts.

But Netflix opens and nothing else.

Hey there everyone,

This is a pretty strange issue, so I'd be happy to help look into it. Let me just ask a few questions to better understand what's happening:

  • Is your Google Home app up-to-date?
  • Is your Chromecast with Google TV's firmware up-to-date?
  • Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Netflix?
  • Does this issue occur on any other app?
  • When did this issue first occur?

If the issue is isolated to Netflix, you may want to reach out to Netflix Support to see if they are aware of any issues on their end. I look forward to your responses on this, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran

Old user. (Various chromecadt for tv 4k)
Only on Netflix.( otherapps work great)
Uninstalled and reinstalled.
Softwares Up do date
Started just around 2 weeks ago.
All phones in family group experiencing the same problem. I opened other threads of the issue and other users responded the same thing. You. An see one here responding on the same issue as me.
Netflix support were very rude and not helpful at all. ((They concentratedcon Netflix in my phone -not the issue- rathervthan on my chromecast tv)) I tried to ecplain and the "only solution wad uninstall delete account from cadt and start all over..  done and still not working. They hung up the call.

BTW - the unresponsiveness is only on chromecast while using Homeapp as the remote to control Netflix. If you use the chromecadt original (white) remote control it works fine. ( but its drainning batteries in just one day) thats why im using the home app remote in my phones. Or any other streaming app on chromecast i can efficiently use my phone as the remote.

Jeran, has there been any activity on this issue? If you see my reply from today on this post, you will see that  this problem has been going for a month with no resolution. Many of us have already contacted Netflix and they' are not even aware of the problem. Besides that, their fixes don't work. ALL other apps work using the Google Home apps remote. ALL other apps that I use on my Samsung Galaxy phone and tablet display the Google TV with Chromecast device when I click the Cast icon.

Bottom line: there are two problems accessing Netflix on the Google TV with Chromecast device:  (1) Netflix does not respond to the remote in the Google Home app; (2) the Netflix app (for me, that would be the Android version) does not display the Google TV with Chromecast device when you click the cast icon.

And just FYI, I can play Netflix on ALL of my other devices: Dell laptop; Samsung tablet & phone; LG smart tv; and Verizon FIOS box. I can play and cast ALL other apps on my Google TV with Chromecast. I do not have my physical remote, so I can't test that option, but the remote through the Google Home app is supposed to work the same way, right? And right now it is not for Netflix. We need a solution to this problem.

I've been having is exact same issue, with both reasons you mentioned. Following this article, I updated my phone's app settings for Google Home, Google Play, AND Netflix. That brought the cast button back to my app, but the Chromecast is still unresponsive to my phone remote. So now I can play shows, but I can't fast forward/rewind, pause, skip intro, or any other controls aside from volume control using the in-app remote.

Super frustrating as the issue still hasn't been resolved, but at least we can start something from the phone now and ask Google to pause the TV.

I have same issue have installed and reinstalled remote in app works on everything except in Netflix. Voice commands still work

Any information about this issue being addressed? it seems like a random bug as all other apps work flawlessly with remote, but its the one I use most what's showing issues.

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled google home and Netflix app.  I’ve reset the Chromecast to factory settings and re- linked.
I previously thought it was just Netflix, but found I am unable to cast from phone through Disney, Hulu and YouTube apps, BUT I can give my google mini a voice command to run movies on my TV.

Is your Google Home app up-to-date?

Yes.

Is your Chromecast with Google TV's firmware up-to-date?

Yes

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Netflix?

Yes

Does this issue occur on any other app?

No

When did this issue first occur?

Remote on my phone worked for the first time I went to use Netflix. I found that after the first show I watched, it was no longer responsive to the remote on my phone. I have not been able to get it to work with any of the usual fixes. (Clearing caches or reinstalls, proper power cycles etc).

I just started using the phone remote yesterday.. and it failed on the same day.

Let's see..

Steps I have taken so far.

Cycle phone, cycle google tv chromecast.

Clear cache on home app, Netflix.

Reinstall Netflix.

Try remote in google tv app on my phone.

Try my wife's phone.

Submitted a feedback ticket in the home app.

Steps I intend to take:

Browse system apps on my Chromecast and clear caches while trying Netflix occasionally.

Await an update because it sure looks like something blocked between the system and the Netflix app.

Same issue here!

Same issue here. I don't use any of the physical remotes due to VERY POOR bluetooth range of the chromecasts, so Im an exclusive home remote control user and this is really annoying, as kids like netflix. All other apps working just fine.

cassidys

Same issue. Normal fixes don't work. The app needs to be updated to fix this bug

I'm also experiencing the same thing. We lost the white physical remote so we can only rely on the Phone remote. And yes, this just started a couple of weeks ago. All other apps work just fine.

Same issue with Netflix. Other apps work fine.

Same issue here. It's so bothering.

John30

I have the same issue: no "cast" button appears in the Netflix app on my Pixel 5 phone. All my other apps show the "cast" button.

John30

I should note that I responded here because another user said there is no "cast" icon in their Netflix app. That is my problem--all my other apps have a "cast" icon. I do not have a problem with the Google Home app remote on my Pixel 5 phone for Netflix--that app remote works for Netflix. Perhaps these issues are related, but it seems that most responses to the general thread are more about the remote than the "cast" icon.

I'm not sure if you've fixed this yet, but I followed this article and updated my phone's app settings for Google Home, Google Play, and Netflix. That brought the cast button back to my app, but the Chromecast is still unresponsive to my phone remote. So now I can play shows, but I can't fast forward/rewind, pause, skip intro, or any other controls aside from volume control using the in-app remote.

Hope this helps!

Adding to this topic because it's very annoying and is not being addressed. I already reached out to Netflix, tried all of their suggestions, and nothing worked. I don't have my white, physical remote for my Google TV with Chromecast, so I'm using the Google Home app and the Open Remote option for the device. It worked a few weeks ago because I was able to watch Netflix shows. Then this stopped working (i.e., no response when I tapped on my Netflix profile), so I started using the Netflix app on my Samsung Galaxy tablet to cast to the GoogleTV with Chromecast. I was able to watch Luther this way, but then I the Google Home app was upgraded, now the device is no longer listed as an available device. I only see my two other devices, Chromecast and Google Nest.

If Google has REMOVED our ability to watch Netflix on the Google TV Chromecast device, TELL US! Otherwise the problem needs to be FIXED! We're paying for Netflix to be able to watch on all of our applicable devices. No one seems to be taking this problem seriously. I even asked the Netflix tech rep if he was aware there was a problem, and he said No. SOMEONE NEEDS TO FIX THIS! It has been going on for over a month with no resolution. Please reply with your response as to how this issue will be resolved.

I, too, am having this problem. Also, it would be nice if the remote could give a ping when lost. Can't find the bugger.

I'm also having this problem!

Plus one on this issue. I just made a bit of a fuss with Netflix support, assuring them that they would not be able to immediately solve the issue, but I just wanted to report the bug. The first rep disconnected as soon as I clarified my intentions, the second heard me out and claimed she submit the ticket to the research team but advised me to contact the manufacturer of the device. Both Netflix and Google are extremely unresponsive on this. I guess Chromecast Google tv users who watch Netflix that have lost their tiny remote are a small enough subset of users to not be prioritized.

Thanks for the update. So if we can't find, or buy, the tiny remote, we're pretty much out of luck. Thanks Google and Netflix!

You can use a generic Bluetooth remote, they have them on Amazon for around $20 and they have varying levels of compatibility (source button or volume buttons may not work for example) but if you dig you can find a descent one for a reasonable price.

ITN1nja

I don't know about everywhere, but I saw Chromecasts with remotes on sale at Best Buy for like $30. The replacement remotes on Amazon were something like $28. At this point, if I want a remote, I'm buying a whole new unit to have it in hand today.

Yup I'm the same way. And it's not just the google home app remote functions. It's also in another app that you can download, also has the same issue. Works in all other applications except in Netflix. Would be nice to actually get an answer instead of a sumbit a complaint form lol

To add to the discussion. Today my household got an upgrade to the Google Home app. (France).

Since this morning I to am unable to use the Google TV remote on other devices to control Netflix on Chromecast (with Google TV).

Never had this problem before and it has always worked flawlessly, coincidence? It's a big one!

Hello! Is there an update on this? I am having the same issue. Thank you!

No, Google have screwed something up as usual. I have read some people have had updates rolled back (which sorts the problem). No doubt they will resolve it eventually.

P.S. Have you had weird sound on Netflix?
