Chromecast Runs out of Storage

Martianman

I love the new Chromecast interface and everything about it--however, I don't love the fact that I can't put more than 14-15 apps on it and then I'm out of space. According to the readings on the device, there is 4.4 GB of space, and right now there is 3.6 GB taken up by apps.

The Google apps installed (I can't control) come out to about 1GB of space.

My 14 apps installed come out to just over 1GB of space. Cache is 463 MB.

So how is 1 + 1 + .5 = 3.6? I would replace every Roku device in my house with a Chromecast if this space limitation weren't here. And to upgrade space you have to spend another $100 on equipment? Pass.

Depending on your usage , you may be better of with the nivida shield, as it has higher in device capacity.  I use both, CCwGTV in bedroom where I only use a few apps , and shield in living room where the rest of my apps live.

I don't see an answer to my question--where is the extra 1GB of space being taken up at on my Chromecast? The apps and cache come out to 2.6 GB (roughly) but the Chromecast says it's taking up 3.6 GB, which limits me to only loading about a dozen apps.

I'm observing the same problem. The storage space use reported for individual apps (in my case 9 apps) doesn't even closely add up to the 3.7GB my Chromecast reports for Apps overall. When I 'See all apps' and add their storage use, it adds up to under 600MB. My Chromecast currently doesn't let me install additional apps.

Hey there,

I'm sorry to say that we don't have an exact answer on where the extra storage being used is coming from, it is highly likely that this is to the cached data that is in the device. All we can recommend for now is to free up some space by clearing unused apps and cached data, then submit feedback via Google TV to let Google know that storage is an issue.

Best regards,

Jeran

I removed the cached data, which was under 0.5GB. This allowed me to install another app, but still doesn't quite explain the gigabyte-sized difference between the sum of apparent sizes of individual apps and the total space Chromecast reports as being used by all apps.

Sadly, I don't have any information on what that extra space is being used for, it may be the Android TV OS files for the Chromecast with Google TV, but I cannot say for sure.

I submitted the feedback on the Chromecast, so I guess that's all I can do for now. If someone wants to close the thread, they can. I wish Google would address that--if it had more space (or more available space I guess I should say), I would replace everything with the new Chromecast. I'm having to return my Roku Ultra I bought in July because it's defective. Blergh.

I totally understand, it's hard to get all the apps you'd like on the Chromecast with Google TV with the amount of space it currently has. If enough feedback is submitted, Google will know it's something more people would want.

For now, I'll go ahead and lock up the thread. If you have any more questions in the future, feel free to create a new thread.

Thank you for helping out, Ashepherdson!

Best regards,
