Chromecast + TV broke my tv. Twice. Loud noise, flickering display after setup

I cannot get this chromecast to work despite two attempts with two different devices!

I purchased this device to replace our older generation chromecast. I plugged it in, ran through setup no issue, but as soon as it downloaded the software it started fritzing out my TV. Loud noise accompanied by loss of display, flickering in and out. Tried to troubleshoot, no luck (used different HDMI ports, reset device, turned off and turned back on). Plugged the older chromecast back in and it worked fine.

Exchanged the Chromecast + TV for a new one thinking it was faulty, but the next one did the EXACT same thing after it updated the Software! I'm so perplexed. The requirements just say "TV with HDMI port" so I'm not sure what's going on that it's breaking my TV!

Please help!!

I have a Samsung LCD TV (mfg 10/2008 -
Samsung LN46A6############" 1080p LCD TV LN46A650A1FXZA).

Hi ginamnm9,

I have just bought my chromecast+googletv and have had the same issue until I changed my resolution to a lower hz

Go to settings - display and sound - resolution. Try 1080p 50hz that worked for me or a 40hz option if it still flickers.

Hope that works for you too 🙂

What a great suggestion, I'll try this! I found the extra hdmi on the side of the TV had the least amount of problems. I'll take your suggestion, thank you!

Hey there ginamnm9,

That's no good, we can take a look into this! I'd be nervous as well if my TV made strange noises and flickered when plugging something in. Let me just ask a few questions to understand what's happening:

  • What generation of Chromecast was your older Chromecast model?
  • Are you able to test the Chromecast with Google TV on another TV to see if the same issue occurs?
  • Does the Samsung TV support HDCP 2.2?  Most televisions that are five years old or newer and have HDMI ports will have at least one port that supports HDCP 2.2.
  • Is there any way to update the firmware of your TV?

I look forward to your response, and if you had any other questions, please let me know!

Best regards,

Jeran
