Chromecast (and google home) intermittent connection to other devices

lil-54

Hi,

I'm having intermittent issues casting to both my chromecast and my google home. They sometimes come up in the google home app and sometimes they don't. It will also sometimes disconnect from my phone mid cast but still continue to play through the chromecast. The only way to stop casting to turn off the device.

The internet is connected on my device (normally an iPhone X, but also happens with my MacBook Pro; both are uptodate with their respective latest versions), and the chromecast and google home appear to be on and connected to the wifi as well (I am able to use voice control with the google home to search the internet). It just seems to be that the google products aren't talking to anyone else. It's also not just my devices; my partners can also not connect using their phone.

Sometimes restarting the wifi seems to resolve the issue, however this is not always the case. Resetting the chromecast or google home also sometimes works but not always. It will also sometimes disconnect half way through the resetting process!

I've tried disabling ap isolation, but I don't think thats the problem as sometimes I am able to connect with no issues and from what I've read if ap isolation is enabled it won't connect at all.

The inability to connect seems to be random and has nothing to do with high internet traffic (we're all in lockdown here so internet traffic is ALWAYS high hahaha).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Lily

Hey there lil-54,

I'm real sorry about the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix those connection issues? If not, I'd be happy to help out, let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • When did this issue start happening?
  • What version of Google Home are you using?
  • How far away is the Chromecast from the router?
  • When these issues happen, what color is the LED light on the Chromecast?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

For now, I would follow the steps listed in this article, as they may help the unstable connection issues.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jaren,

Yes still having this problem unfortunately 😕

  • When did this issue start happening? When my partner and I moved in together at the beginning of 2021, they brought the chromecast with them. It’s been happening on and off since then. But I’ve noticed it’s gotten worse in the last 2-3 months.
  • What version of Google Home are you using? The app? I am using 2.44.105 (I’ve just noticed there’s an update too, so I’ll do that as well)
  • How far away is the Chromecast from the router? I’m in a very small two bedroom apartment so no more than 5m.
  • When these issues happen, what color is the LED light on the Chromecast? The LED light is white.
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried? Resetting the router, hard restart of the chromecast and the google nest, removing them from the app, deleting and re-adding the app, deleting the home on the app and creating a new one, accessing it through different devices (MacBook, a windows computer, iPad), updating my phone, updating the app.

I’ve tried the steps in the article numerous times and no luck 😞

No problem! We can try some troubleshooting to see if we can resolve this connection issue, go ahead and give these a try:

  • Make sure your mobile devices and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network.
    • Check your Chromecast Wi-Fi network.
      • If you have a Chromecast with Google TV, at the top right of your TV screen, select your account icon  select Settings  Network & Internet.
      • If you have a different Chromecast model, on your mobile device, open the Home app   tap your Chromecast  Settings   Device information  Wi-Fi.
    • You can usually check the Wi-Fi network of your mobile device in its Settings app.
  • If your router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, make sure your Chromecast is on the 5 GHz network.
  • Update your router’s firmware, if needed. Sometimes routers have bugs, and there are firmware fixes to address them. Make sure your router is running the most updated software.
  • Reset your Chromecast by unplugging it and waiting 30 seconds before reinserting the power cord.
  • Reset your modem or router by following your device manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Move your Chromecast further away from the back or side of your TV, and make sure it is not touching other devices, wires or cables. These devices may cause Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference.
  • Use an Ethernet adapter to connect your Chromecast to your router. This will give you a direct, hardwired connection to the internet and will alleviate your home Wi-Fi network.
  • Check that your wireless network can support the number of devices connected to it.
    • If you’ve connected many devices to your network, you might need to set up a mesh network, like Google Wi-Fi, for better wireless coverage.

These steps are made for the Chromecast in particular, but the same logic should apply for the Google Home device as well.

Let me know if these steps help the connection at all! If not, we can try some more.

Thank you,

Jeran
