Chromecast firmware update

davidjurss
Community Member

Today when I started my TV, I got an update notification, hangs at 0%, and fails shortly afterwards. Now it says there's a network failure, but there's nothing wrong with my network. Device shows current firmware update, so I'm not sure why it's trying to update.

Any way around this, or what could be triggering it to update when it's not needed?

Reboot the Chromecast device - unplug it from the main power grid for about 5 minutes then plug it back in. Observe behaviour.

I've done that, to include a factory reset. Still no change.

Same problem by me and did factory reset..still same issue

You could try to forget the wifi network and reconnect. If that won't work, hard reset the Chromecast device using its built-in button.

any luck?

have the same problem for almost two weeks now and cant solve it.. Tried everything there is, factory reset etc.. If only we could connect to PC to flash it and install old firmware.

Wish i could get my money back and buy a good tv dongle.

No, can't figure it out. I've done everything suggested, and finally just gave up and bought a new one with the remote.

Its just outrageous  that they can break a working piece with faulty software with no way to fix it which forces you to spend more money

我的有兩個Chromecast 2 同樣都是更新中 0 % 後失敗,無論是恢復原廠或是重新開機,都無法更新完成🤬

Same issue with Chromecast 2 since this week, update stuck at 0% (after factory reset)
Looks like something is wrong at Google's end? Maybe update files/server offline(?)

It's gotta be something on Googles end. It had the current firmware so there was no reason to update, but what they're describing is exactly what's going on with mine. Oh well, got a new one anyway.

Update: my phone is an Android 12 handset but got desperate after at least a dozen attempts but managed to get it working using a friend's iPhone (with latest iOS and Google Home apps).
Might be a coincidence but this is what worked for me:
- on iPhone (on home Wifi) launched Google Home app and made sure I was signed in
- Clicked the + and chose 'Add to home' > 'Create New Home' called Test
- Then added the Chromecast 2 to this new home. This time the firmware update didn't get stuck at 0%, progressed pretty quickly
- Once it was all working moved the Chromecast to my own home and deleted the test Home

Weird that this week never got to it to work after numerous attempts and factory resets using my Android handset (which is fully up-to-date) and that it worked straightaway using an iPhone?!
Do you have access to an iPhone? Might not work, but did work for me.

Hey there,

I'm sorry to hear that your Chromecast is giving you some update issues! I know I'd be a little annoyed if my device got stuck in an update loop. Go ahead and give these steps a try, and let me know if they help out:

  • Confirm that the device is plugged into the power outlet, and is not powered by the TV.
  • Make sure that the Chromecast device is within 15 feet from the router
  • Forget the network by factory resetting the device, or using the Google Home app.
  • Reboot the router.
  • If you are able, try setting up the Chromecast using another device, such as a tablet or phone.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know/

Best regards,
Jeran

Tried all of that. My router is within 5 feet of the Chromecast and I wasn't having any other network issues. It didn't even need to update, as it was on its latest firmware.

Chromecast 出現更新問題不是使用者的問題, 路由器 網路 電源供電都沒問題,如果是自己的問題那只是單一事件,問題是有很多使用者都出現一樣的問題,所以很確定是Chromecast 有問題.

The problem is on Googles side, not from the users. Very sad that it is not taken care of the Problem!

我的兩個Chromecast 2,更新停留在 0% 問題解決了

我的結論 Chromecast 2 更新會挑 WIFI , 所以多嘗試其他的路由器 , 或是用手機熱點分享 , 或是用其他手機熱點分享

Same problem here. Tried all of the above.

To add some more info; i have tried different wifis, different routers, powered on/off chromecast and done factory reset. After the factory reset i get fiRmware Updating 0%. If i then power off/on, chromecast does momentarily work. It shows the wallpaper etc (so i know that it is connected to wifi) after which, it immediately reverts to a firmware upgrade and 0%. I would guess that the issue is at the Google server end.

Hey there,

For anyone that is still experiencing this issue, and they have exhausted all the troubleshooting steps in the Help Center articles, as well as the ones I have provided, I would encourage you to reach out to Chromecast support. They may suggest some more steps for you to try, but if they do not work, you may need to look at getting your Chromecast device replaced.

Here is how to get a hold of Chromecast support, you'll just need to follow the prompts, then it should supply you with the contact options.

Best regards,

Jeran

Had a similar issue with my 2 Chromecast devices. Was able to solve it with the help of The Chromecast support chat. In a nutshell the workaround was to first reset the device, then reconnect it to my Android phone's hotspot network. The firmware downloaded on this network wihout a problem. Then I reset the chromecast again and connected to my home network. You will need two phones to do this. One with the hotspot and another connected to it and running Google Home app

Good luck!!

Thanks Nadav. It worked! There is a typo on you response which confused me.

Yes, you need TWO phones to do this. One to act as a hotspot. Then an additional phone to run Google Home. Both the Google Home phone and Chromecast connect to the hotspot phone.

I am using iPhones (so I am not sure if this is totally relevant), but ChromeCast needed to use WPA authentication (not WEP nor WPA2) when connecting to the hot spot.

I did a factory reset on ChromeCast and directed both the Google Home iphone and Chromecast to the hotspot phone. After which the firmware finally updated 😁

Then, I needed to switch off the hotspot and unplug the ChromeCast. The I redirected my Google Home phone to my regular wifi. When powering up the ChromeCast, Google Home spotted a new device and I was able to re-define ChromeCast to use my regular wifi and not the hotspot.

Done.

Again thanks Nadav.

this worked for me too. also with WPA 2 and 2,4 ghz. With Chromecast 2 & 3. Thank you nadav and lafual! 🙂

Hey there,

Just to follow-up, was nadavlevy3 and Lafual's work-around working for everyone that tried it? Also, did anyone contact Google Support and get a different response or work-around?

I look forward to the replies!
