Chromecast keeps disconnecting on YouTube app

rafaeln

When casting videos from the YouTube app on Chromecast, videos will simply stop playing after a few (random number of) minutes and go back to the Chromecast background screen. This started happening yesterday morning (Thursday, October 28th, 2021) and makes playback of YouTube videos almost impossible.

When the issue started I was running the then-latest version of Android 11; now I am on Android 12 (but note the issue started before I upgraded the phone's OS). This issue does not happen with other apps: Netflix and HBO Max work just fine.

The firmware version of my Chromecast is 1.49.250946 and the YouTube app version is the latest as of yesterday (I updated it hoping it would fix it, but it did not).

Is this a known issue?

Hey there rafaeln,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix that YouTube issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • Does this occur when casting from the website as well, or just the app?
  • Does this occur when casting from another device, such as a tablet or computer?
  • What version of the Google Home app are you using?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi, Jeran!

In the last few days it stopped happening (at least with the YouTube app). I did uninstall and reinstall the Google Home app like a week ago, so maybe that did it?

However, last night, for the first time in like a week, I DID have a sudden disconnection, during playback of a video using the HBO Max app. It just disconnected and the TV just showed the Chromecast background.

Let me answer your questions:

  • Does this occur when casting from the website as well, or just the app? It's never happened from the website, only when casting from an app on my Android 5a phone.
  • Does this occur when casting from another device, such as a tablet or computer? No.
  • What version of the Google Home app are you using? 2.46.1.7 (I just updated it today, although strangely the version number didn't seem to change).

What are the "usual suspects" when the phone spuriously disconnects from the Chromecast? When it happens again, what sort of things can I check? What sort of steps usually clear up such connectivity issues?

Thanks so much!

Rafa

That's good to hear that it stopped happening! It's a possibility it might have been a minor error either on the Google Home app, or on YouTube's side. In terms of keeping a strong connection to your Chromecast to minimize issues, I would check out these two articles:

I can't establish a Wi-Fi connection to my Chromecast

Troubleshoot your Chromecast connection

Both of those article contain a good checklist to keep the Chromecast running smoothly. However, if you keep experiencing random disconnects, please let us know!

In the meantime, did you have any other questions or concerns for us?

Best regards,

Jeran

I am now having the exact same issue. It started after updating to Android 12. I have factory resettled the Chromecast, updated all apps. But the problem persists. When casting from the YouTube app, the cast disconnects exactly after two minutes and returns to the Chromecast background screen.

What I did that has helped so far has been to uninstall the "Home" app and reinstall it (i.e. not just update it). Hopefully that will help you, too!

I have a Pixel 4 and the phone doesn't allow me to uninstall the home app because it came as a core function on the Google phone. Same with YouTube, it cannot be uninstalled. This is so unbelievably frustrating.

Heya Ecdj,

Are you able to clear out the cached app data on those two apps? Here should be how to do so:

  • From the Home screen, swipe up from the center to display all your apps.
  • Go to SettingsApps.
  • Tap on All apps.
  • Tap on either Google Home or YouTube.
  • Tap on Storage & cache.
  • Tap Clear cache.

Give that a try, then test out the Chromecast again to see if that solves the problem!

Best regards,

Jeran

Nope. That doesn't work either. It disconnects every 2min on the second. I wish I had never updated to Android 12 and cannot wait to switch to Apple. This is beyond ridiculous. Thanks for trying to help though.

I'm really sorry that this is such a headache to deal with. If you have the time, would you be able to re-create the issue, then submit feedback via the Google Home app with logs enabled? You don't need to, but it would help the engineering team look into this issue a bit deeper.

I wish we could have been more helpful, but in the meantime, did you have any more questions we can address?

Best regards,

Jeran

Hey there!

We haven't heard back from Ecdj, and it's been a few days, so I'm locking the thread. As always, feel free to make a new thread if you have any more questions or concerns.

Thank you for your help, rafaeln!

Best regards,
Jeran
