Chromecast keeps factory resetting itself

alfredpedroza

I've had my Chromecast model GZRNL for over a year and it worked well for the first 6 months.  After it started automatically factory resetting itself, I unplugged the device and have kept it in a drawer as I got tired setting it up from scratch every day or multiple times a day. I just got around to trying to find a fix. I use the power adapter and USB cable that came with the device. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Hi alfredpedroza,

Thanks for reaching out. Let's sort this out.

A few questions: does your Chromecast have a remote or is it just a dongle? What's the LED light status on your Chromecast? Does the issue occur while watching a video content or even when it's in idle mode? Please try to plug in the Chromecast into a different HDMI port on your TV. Rebooting it and trying it on a different TV screen might also help.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hey there,

It's me again. I want to make sure you're all good — how did the steps go?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hello Jennifer,

Sorry for late reply, I missed the email notifications for this thread. My Chromecast does have a remote.

I've tried the Chromecast on different TVs and HDMI ports, same results. Right now, I can't get very far past the setup. Sometimes it factory resets on its own while I'm still going through setup, other times I get through setup, can use the device for an hour or so, but then it factory resets itself when it's idle and when I get back to trying to use it it's back to the setup screen like it's a new device. I've actually seen it do this and it goes to the android factory reset/wipe screen (at which point the remote doesn't allow input), and automatically tries to load data from an SD card, and then auto reboots back to the initial setup screen as if it's a new device.

Thanks,

Alfred
