Chromecast repeatedly halts on static video images. Does the new Chromecast with Google TV do this?

I have the old first-generation Chromecast (firmware 1.36.159268).

It has a disturbing problem. When casting a video with static images, it keeps halting. Then, when moving images resume, the Chromecast quickly "catches up" to an audio that is mysteriously ahead of the video even though it had been halting.

Here is one example from YouTube of a video that gives me this problem.

I'm considering getting the new Chromecast with Google TV, but I don't want to do so if I end up with the same problem.

Hence my question:

Does the new Chromecast with Google TV have the same problem with static images in videos?

Thank you

The short answer to your question is: no. The Chromecast with Google TV has no trouble playing anything unless your internet is particularly slow.

I have this same issue you've described and have posted my issue here: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Chromecast/1080p-60fps-YouTube-content-stutters-on-Gen-1-Chro...

Although someone has makes it as solved, the solutions 'accepted' are misinformation. The only useful advice I received is to submit feedback in the Google Home app with logs enabled and hope Google does something about it issue.

I've personally found it only happens with content that has a 1080p 60fps stream and anything that was uploaded at a lower resolution doesn't so it. Unfortunately there's no way to tell your Chromecast to play at a lower resolution or frame rate.

Since opening the thread I have also found a friend with a first gen Chromecast who says this doesn't happen. There may be some overheating or hardware failure causing the issue we experience.

On another note if @Jeran sees this can you please remove the solutions from my locked thread, I believe I made it clear that they are not a solution to the issue posted.

@Ridion, thank you for your post. I looked through your thread, and I see what you mean about receiving unhelpful advice.

You also seem to have figured out the problem more precisely than I had managed, so thank you for those clarifications. For me, the pauses happen only while a static image is shown. I wonder if that's the same for you?

Regarding possible overheating: This happens even when I've had the Chromecast and TV both turned off for over a day, and only just turned them on. They're not near a heat source, and there's no sun as it's nighttime. Therefore, overheating can be ruled out.

I shall purchase the new Chromecast with Google TV, but as you say, it seems a waste of resources to just throw away something that could be easily fixed.

I rather suspect that Google won't fix it, as the product is over a year old, and the warranty for all of them has long expired. (Built-in obsolescence is an old modern problem, isn't it!)

Hey there paddylandau,

I see you have already looked through that previous thread, but I would suggest, if you have the time, that you also re-create that casting issue, then submit feedback via the Google Home app with logs enabled. Like I mentioned in the other thread, that way, our engineering team can look into this issue and take the appropriate steps.

I'm sorry I couldn't have been more helpful, but the more data they have on this issue, the better.

Best regards,

Jeran

Thanks, Jeran. I've already replaced the Gen 1 Chromecast with the new Chromecast with Google TV, which works properly.

I should have thought of submitting feedback, but as the Gen 1 is so old, I doubt that Google would fix it anyway!

That good to hear that your newer Chromecast is working properly. It's no problem that you didn't submit feedback, so no worries about that! Google still looks at the older devices to see if there are any apparent issues, but it's based on the severity of the issue, how easy it is to fix, and how much user feedback they receive on the issue.

In the meantime, did you have any other questions or concerns that we can address?

Best regards,

Jeran

You're welcome! In that case, I'm locking up the thread. Feel free to make a new thread if you run into any issues with your new Chromecast with Google TV.

Thank you so much for your help on this, @Ridion!

Best regards,
Jeran
