Chromecast shows up with multiple IP and MAC addresses?

I noticed that when I power up my Chromecast (1st gen), it advertises itself with 2 different MAC addresses which get assigned 2 different IP addresses.

I can arping both IP addresses, and as soon as I pull power I can't arping either one. When I plug it back in, I can then arping both IP addresses.

One of the MAC addresses (d0:e7:82:d9:31:65) is the one that shows up in the Google Home App under Device Information. The other one seems to come from a dynamic range (9a:b7:13:13:4e:31). Each Mac address gets assigned an IP address.

I was curious to find out if this was normal? Does anybody know the purpose of the second MAC/IP address?

Hey there dhylands,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for being patient! If you are still encountering this issue, I'd be happy to help take a look into it, since I know this is a bit of an odd problem. Let me just ask a few questions about what's happening:

  • What is the firmware version of your Chromecast device?
  • Does this issue still occur after restarting the Chromecast?
  • Is the issue still happening after a factory reset?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Firmware version is 1.36.159268

The issue still occurs after restarting (i.e. power cycle) and after a factory reset.

I only noticed it because I now have a device on my network which allows me to track unknown devices.

That is a strange occurrence. There was a similar thread not too long ago where someone had the same issues. They were able to get into contact with Google to look at getting the device replaced. If you are able to, I'd recommend that you do the same.

Here is how to get into contact with Google Chromecast Support directly.

Best regards,

Jeran
